*crossing fingers on a Vail Pass closure early Sunday morning*
Fuck... given the 20mph pace cars on Monday with 1/2" of snow on the ground, you better believe it.
Sunday will be delicious. Some snow between Wed - Sat, but it'll be warm and amounts won't be that big. However, late afternoon Saturday through Sunday morning will be awesome. Sunday is the day, period. Tuesday could be fun as well, but Sunday. Did I mention Sunday? Sunday.
I'm actually excited to go skiing for the first time all season. 'bout friggin time!
Looks like I picked the wrong time to injure myself. Damn rocks.
I crashed into a big rock up on Queen (Contest Bowl) at Breck last Saturday. My skis punched through 3" thick wind-slab shortly after pointing them downhill while exiting a small chute (One-eyed Jack). I started falling and failed to make the big turn I was planning on making. Ended up taking a head first dive/slide into the last rocks lining the chute on the right. Broke my helmet and jacked up my left shoulder and right knee from impact with the rock. It was ugly and scary. Nothing broken on me, but I'm pretty banged up. I think it's gonna take a couple weeks to heal. All in all, I feel pretty lucky though.
Of course it was on my decided "last run".
So glad I will be back from AZ on Friday night...Sunday and Monday go time!
wow....that stinks. Glad you're ok. "last runs" are a bitch.
Vail FB says 17, 21 and 39 opening tomorrow. Keep it comin'
Here is a pretty sattelite map-

that is what it looked like on Saturday...so yonder trees and those aspects will be ok, but south facing stuff isn't really close to being ready. I'm happy they are opening them so everyone can "head to the back" and get that epic blower and hopefully lessen the load on 11, 7, and the front.
Another off to JHole tomorrow @ 5am. Locked in a real low last minute rate for 3 night/3 days ski.
Converging on forecasts for 45" by Friday night, insanity by Sunday. Snorkel packed. Wife calling in sick. I'm closing the business... finally feeling f'n pumped for this season.
Looks like Colorado will do real well by weekend end. Hope to hit up leftovers on Monday.
I predict 17 and 21 will not open due to winds or close early tommorow. Maybe even the whole mtn. That would make Fri. that much better. You still go all the way to the grass when you turn on the South Facing stuff in Game Creek Bowl.
lots of talk about the new snow and powder fever. I know folks are going to be chomping at the bit to get into EV and other areas....just please be careful. I hate to sound like the mom of the board, but turn things down a bit this weekend and go with zero expectations. It'll snow more...just be careful folks.
Most of you will know where this pic was taken

I don't believe it. EV avalanches don't hurt Front Rangers... everyone knows that. But hey, if people want to gun for that shit in these conditions, the less I have to worry about frontside stashes getting skunked.
Would also appreciate Joel's insight here. Really, out of all the forecast sites I look at CAIC is high - but I agree, they tend to be conservative. I know models are showing a ton of moisture for Steamboat area, but temps are a likely issue. Maybe CAIC is putting too much on the moisture input and not adjusting for temp issues?
8-14 looks ugly again. Are we just getting teased before going back to a dry, miserable pattern?
How many times does it need to be said? FUCK the 8-14 day. It's no bueno.
Just enjoy what's about to come this week :)
