Our house really lacked a proper place to put a dining table. We had been making due with a small round table with drop-leafs, but with a 4th member of the family on the way this was no longer going to be adequate:

One day I was contemplating the dilemma and had the idea to put a tabletop over the stairwell on top of the railing. I commissioned my retired-and-always-looking-for-a-project father to build it. This is the final birch and cherry result. It turned out even better than I expected.

Anyone built a firewood rack? Thinking of building a small one and pondering materials. Was thinking cedar for rot resistance but maybe there are even some composites that don't look like garbage? Any ideas from the DIY collective?

This was my house in late 2007; note the snow path directly onto the steps. I had to shovel five or six times a day to keep it clear. The house also lacked an entry area with space for coats and shoes; wet ski clothes just got scattered all over the kitchen.

This is how it looks today; this took me about two years to finish, mainly because I took my time. I did it 99.9% by myself; my wife helped level the posts, but that was it. Now we have a mudroom, closet storage, and a nice covered deck for hot or rainy evenings. This is basically our living room all summer now.

I didnt get any photos of cutting the glass, and creating spacers for the glass/ring interface out of links, but you get the idea.
With this piece, the craftsmanship is as much in what you will never see as much as what you will.
$85 shipped, I can do these with your own rings for an even better story.
Finally was able to get up to the house to finish the ski chair. Some mags hooked me up with the last pairs of skis to finish it. I've seen a lot of ski chairs, but I needed one that would fold up for storage as my deck is not the biggest thing (yet...). 2 bolts and 2 pins to pull and it folds up nice.

Also banged out this bench to go with our dining room table. It is made entirely from discarded pallets (because they are free, they have the sawmill marks that are similar to the table so they go well together, and they were all hardwood and easily 10 years old and just as good as the best kiln-dried lumber I could find).

Built my baby a spice rack out of some 1x maple. Planed down to just under 1/2". Shelves are routed in to the verticals, fences are glued in place.(strait hyde glue suckas) Dyed that muthafucka green!
