Fuel Prices.

I’ve always wondered how the math shakes out:

Total carbon emissions driven 50k miles:
- New Tesla 3, including emissions from manufacturing, transport, energy gen, etc…
- Used ‘98 Civic w/ 150k on the clock, NOT including emissions from manufacturing.

IE - If you have a modest, efficient, ICE car, are you doing more harm swapping “prematurely” to an EV?

I don’t disagree but EV batteries are going up even more than the price of gas. And we’d trade Saudi, Iran, Venezuela and Russia for…Congo, China, and Russia.

I have a lot of cash in midstream stocks and for the most part don’t have a problem with pipelines. That dilbit shit is another animal, once spilled if it finds it’s way into water it doesn’t float, it sinks to the bottom.

One of the costliest spills in US history was right by my hometown.

So I found a E85 gas station near me in the CO mountains.
Where I filled up today the 91 octane was 1.5X the price of E85.

I've been getting approximately 23 miles per gallon with 91 octane gas @ $4.55/gallon
If I get anything more than 15 miles per gallon with the E85, I'll be financially ahead buying E85 @ $3.00/gallon.

Am I missing something else?

Spending gas and time driving to the gas station and filling up 1.5x more often? And isn’t premium a little less bad for engines? Could be urban legend.

Yes agree, dilbit if it ends up in a body of water is a bugger to clean up. Though on the other hand if on land the solvent will evaporate and the heavy are not going anywhere. Whereas if it was light crude like that Balken stuff that you can almost burn in a auto engine it would be very mobile and could get into a aquifer. Different crudes different problems.

Just some numbers for US:

Imports 6000k BPD crude, down form 8000K in 2016

Exports crude 2800k so net import crude 3200K

Total exports non crude 4,400k BPD so exporting 1,200 bpd net roughly

So this is where the US exports of crude go

France 100k

Netherlands 290K

India 350K

China 260k

Canada 300k though Canada exports to US 3700 BPD

Singapore 100k

South korea 350K

UK 230K

shouldnt lifetime be what matters? There’s your personal carbon contribution which shouldn’t be manufacturing total, but instead manufacturing cost amortized over vehicle lifetime prorated by your ownership of the vehicle.

Helps save fuel but might be worse from a climate change perspective. A shit ton of non pollution controlled smaller engines probably kicks out more nastiness than a smaller number of larger engines with pollution control devices.

My motor scooter has been getting a lot more use this year..
