To be clear. I don't think Steve and i are saying its your fault. Its more the case that its easy to yank/yard on it rather than try to work it in nice and smooth. Vulcan/Mercury are touring boots after all not gorilla Lange boots

I would have thot that buckle would be more likely to break getting bumped on something mine has been fine probably 60 days of use
what are the chances of putting a booster strap on the mercury, anybody done it or seen it done?
It's probably my fault; I was putting a lot of force into the buckle to try to get it closed. But still, that's a complete failure of the buckle since I fuckin sheared it in half just trying to close the boot. Anyone have any extras? How long do you think it will be before I can get a replacement from dynafit?
I am just a small lazy hAZN man with skinny fucking ankles so no problems here BUT doin up the boot cuff you DO have to wait till that buckle is over center/slides down the elongated slot before you crank on them ... then its all rosy
I have booster straps on mine. Easy to do it just take the old ones off and replace using the 2 screws at the back.Quote:

I'll be putting Boosters on my Vulcans in the next couple of weeks. I'm probably going to mount it about 10mm higher than the stock one to allow it to be run under the cuff overlaps or under the boot tongue. Drilling the carbon cuff should be OK, right? High speed, low pressure?
Doesnt Dynafit recommend removing the screws from stock strap, so it isn't in the way when skinning without the downhill tongues, anyway? I've found it convenient that way. Seems to me you could use a bungee chord if you wanted to. No need to screw the booster strap on. No need to drill holes new holes in the cuff to use the strap in a higher position.
They don't get in the way. I just leave them as loose as they will go for skinning. Then again what works for me might not work for you. It's all preference anyways.Quote:

The original dynafit power strap is easy to remove mine pulled thru the screw on the second day so I bought some larger SS washers from the building supply to keep them on
I am more interested in whetehr Boosters get in the way on skinning and change overs
I got set of boosters coming from MEC any how so really the question is if I need a set of alpines and a set for ATs, I checked into the Technica cochise power strap n buckle thing, my local store can get them but I think maybe it would be over kill and get in the way on a touring boot
I will probably try taking that piece off the top of the stock liner that bugs the top of my feet just for kicks even tho I got some power wraps ...i will get back to you
So Lee and all . . .
I just got some Vulcans and while they're pretty sweet overall and i'm happy with them, I've got a couple issues. I've been skiing on Zzeus's for the last five years with a Daleboot-branded Intuition liner I put in last year just to stretch out another season since the shells were beat down (I'll prob put the intuitions into the Vulcans once the stock liner gives out).
When I tested the vulcans in the store, they actually felt relatively soft to me. Softer than I expected anyhow, so I thought they'd be perfect. On snow however they felt REALLY STIFF. Maybe the Mercury would have been a better choice but i'm really happy with the lack of weight in the Vulcan due to the carbon cuff. Anyway, I didn't use the powerstraps or a booster on the zeus but i'm kinda thinking I should with the Vulcan cuz it helps keep the liner snugged up to my skinny calves. If I do, I'm gonna run the strap under the cuff on top of the liner. Also thinking i'm gonna remove the stops in the cuffs to get a smoother flex and flip the lean lock dealie to get a more upright stance. My main issue is with the tongue which seems to give that insane stiffness. Has anyone tried trimming the tongue down a bit to soften the flex as well as make it a bit smoother? Also who's put a Full-Tilt tongue or other aftermarket tongue in? I've found a few things on the webs about Full-Tilt/Raichle tongues but don't have any experience or knowledge of these otherwise.
Thanks all.
Why not just ski it without the tongue?
Tried that. Feels weird. Still stiff but felt "foldy-collapsey" when I pushed hard. Boot didn't fit nearly as well without the tongue to push my skinny calf and ankle back. I'm not really psyched on the whole removable tongue deal and would like to just leave it in all the time. If I could dial it in to ski like I want without the tongue that'd obviously be great but it seems unlikely. Then again I've only skied them twice.
Not tried modding the tongue.
Mercury & the Vulcan are essentially the same weight, the carbon cuff on the Vulcan is to give the extra stiffness without adding additional weight.
Just weighed a pair of 26 Mercurys & 26 Vulcans with the stock liners & the crappy stock footbeds & they're 3050g & 3162g per pair respectively.
My 27 Mercurys with the Insteprint footbeds & alignment/canting shims under the stock lines are 3492g per pair.
somebody has a blog showing/telling how they ground out the stops which made the boot more progressive but too soft SO they trimmed down a stiff raichle tongue to fit and made a boot with about the same stiffness but more progressive feel, maybe somebody know the site?
Earlyups did it to a Mercury with a Krypton tongue: http://www.earlyups.com/featured/gea...ercury-review/ . Vulcans don't have the stops, well 12/13 didn't anyway. Anyone know if the Vulcan tongue is stiffer than the Mercury? Surely that would have been easier than hacking an off-brand tongue.
Thanks for that link spyderjon. Yeah my Vulcans have the bolt-on stops, so no worries with messing my boots up. My genius ass hadn't even thought of using the mercury tongue; I'll have to check it out.
So Lee Lau, it seems like you liked this boot but found it a bit too stout. Just out of curiosity, what do you typically use these days? The Zeus worked pretty well for me even though it was significantly softer than i'd have liked and tended to pull alot of wheelies in funky snow due to lack of rearward support. I think the Vulcan with that high and stiff rear cuff will help alot with that issue.
OK since the stock liners are useless to me and just sitting on the shelf I thot WTF not try this mod SO I removed this^^ piece on one liner and left the other for comparison ^^ as per skialpy, AND so just standing around the mancave there is a very noticable difference in the amount of pressure on the 1st metatarsal as in I think I could actualy ski the liner with the piece removed
It was pretty easy to remove that piece without fucking anything up, just cut the stitches with a razor blade it takes 5 min, as skialpy mentioned the tongue doesn't stay down so well after removing the cover piece but there is a BIG difference
edit: I measured the thickness of that piece with calipers, its 2-3mm thick where they stack no wonder it hurts, if that piece was left out and 2 more sets of lace loops were sewn into the liner lower down to keep the tongue in place the liner would work WAY better
Some mindless posturing whilst I'm stuck at work....
skied my Vulcan's on some firm groomers the other day for the 1st time. I've got them in the upright fwd lean setting, which feels great in pow. On hard snow it felt like I couldn't push/bend fwd enough to weight the front edges of my skis properly.
Before I experiment myself.... what say the masses, take the flex blocks out, or change the lean setting?
Guess I've been reluctant to change the lean setting as its nice touring. Worried it will be more tiring having knees bent more when skiing down, I probably need to HTFU.
changing the lean setting is temporary, grinding out the stops is not, consider most of the time you will be unlocked in a boot with huge ROM, only time you will be locked into a more agressive forward lean is for the down ...why not give it a try?
Yeah these boots are like hitting a brick wall it is what it is, personaly I don't have a probelm alternating between the mercs and a 4 buckle overlaping alpine, there are still the best fitting SHELL I have ever had in a boot, the brickwall stiff is also a leap in performance over my old AT boots
yeah HTFU
if I was a badass maggot I would say fuck palau ?
these are my only boots so I'm not swapping back & forth to alpine boots.
Flex blocks are screwed/bolted in Vulcans, so I can take them out & put them back easily.
The other part I missed is I'm missing cartlidge from back of my patella, so there is a point in when bending my knees & weighted, fking hurts. Either side is ok, but the 'sweet' spot hurts.
Right so you have this years Vulcan with removable stops and of course last years Vulcan didn't have stops ... then by all means give it a try
and tell us what you think
Anyone having flex pattern problems with the Vulcan should've gone with the Mercury.
