The Forester is by no means a looker, but at least it’s fairly unique and original. All the mid-size wagons and SUVs these days look the same.
After a 6 year hiatus, I am returning to the wagon bandwagon. I have a 2018 audi a4 allroad being delivered this weekend, one owner coming off a lease. I had a b8 avant, but glad to see they've fixed the oil consumption and entertainment issues from that generation.
Yeah, I think it's more just me getting over having to potentially pay $25-30k for a new car when they're all so similar. We'll probably just end up getting a used Forester XT with lower mileage.
As a Boulder County resident I think you’re legally required to have at least one Subaru in the family.

Mazdas really are more fun to hustle through corners, if you’re into that type of thing.
Despite living in Boulder County, my wife has zero interest in an EV.

* Subaru really knows how to lock down certain geographic markets. Boulder, Seattle, New England private schools (that aging Parent's Volvos haven't already dominated)... If you're in one of those it might be nice to step outside the surrounding cultural norm.
* I think Mazda's current SUV design language is way more attractive than the sea of bland white boxes put out there by just about every other small/mid-size manufacturer. The CX-50 and really the CX-90 are great looking cars especially in that Soul Red and whatever their deep navy blue is called.
That said, since this is TRG, just get whatever pre-owned A4allroad that fits within your budget and call it good. Enjoy the better seats, driving mannerism and power over whatever Forrester you're leaning towards.

It's also what you know. I can do a Subaru head gasket. I'm familiar with most of Toyota's pitfalls. The Audi is moving into a different category where most people will need a professional mechanic that specializes in VAG vehicles.
That said, Mazda has been quietly killing it. I had a friend with a 3-Speed that was so fast & fun (until he totaled it).
I honestly don't even think Subarus are that much better in terms of reliability to the average euro wagon. My wife swore by Subaru's for the first ten years we were together and they were total crapcans. If it wasn't a headgasket, it ate tires. I especially loved her POS legacy where the entire center stack would go on the fritz and the car would brick itself. Or worse, it would work but the radio would be stuck on full blast static. Fuck that brand.
I will say she had a two door base model Impreza from 1997 that was okish. That car was so base it didn't even have a tach or a passenger side mirror. 2.2l is the only motor they ever made that didn't eat head gaskets so they naturally had to kill it off for making the rest of the family look bad.

So I'm about to go pick up my XC70 T6 of from a very reputable euro tech.
Had it towed in because I had a low oil light, and found the dipstick pushed out and excessive water in the oil at the dipstick when I checked it.
In the voicemail, the garage mentioned the PCV system that I replaced last summer is functioning properly.
I totally agree that water probably got into the oil via the "open" dipstick- it was snowing really hard at the time and who knows how long it was unseated.
But if the PCV system is working, WTF pushed the dipstick out in the first place? Where is the excessive pressure coming from?
The previous oil level was good. I changed the oil myself ~1,000 miles ago and am hyper vigilant of oil quantity, as these cars throw a fit of lights and bells if you're off by a few ounces.
Did they do a compression check?

Is there an o-ring on the dipstick? I have to routinely replace the one on my car, as it hardens with time and stops retaining the dipstick.
Capt obvious, but... maybe you're getting a little more blow-by past the rings if they're worn or if the cylinders are grooved.
