It's easier than it looks, especially if you're in a rush to get the goods. I've committed this crime twice; only the second time can I blame it on gomerdom. First rule for avoiding this is NEVER think you can start your fill and then leave to do something else (evaluate colon/bladder, buy road munchies, etc.), and remember to remove the nozzle when you get back to the car - you can clean car windows/lights, but NEVER walk away from car when filling.
This in OR where you aren’t allowed to do your own fill. That girl in the yellow vest is the attendant.
I'm 14 or 15 and in drivers ed in Montana. I'm driving and the shop teacher/instructor has me stop for gas. We wait in the car as he starts the pump, then goes into pay. He comes back with an armful of snacks and instructs me to drive away. We take the hose with us.
At least I learned a good lesson that day.
