Hey SkiJ,
I was hanging around Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands the past couple days. On the county road between Washburn and Cornucopia at the height of land we passed what looked like a defunct ski area. I figured if anyone on TGR knew about this place, it would be you.
Edit: found this online

OK, I’m going deep into a rabbit hole here….
Looking at that Valhalla link I posted, it mentions a coach named “Snowball” Severud. I’ve been hearing that name all my life. So I googled him.
He was the Head Coach for the US ski-jumping team at the 1960 Winter Olympics at Squaw Valley, and then in 1968 he was Head Coach for the Canadian team at the Winter Olympics in Grenoble.
SkiJ: look at his hometown.

jdoyle: mount up those pivots and go shred. Post pics.
uglymoney: how was Ski Brûle? I was close by in Minocqua for T-day, thought about driving over and saying hi. Their website dissuaded me.
On Black Friday we drove up to the UP and hiked up Mt Zion, home of the little ski area hosted by the community college. Then drove up to Little Girl Point on Lake Superior, where we witnessed a multi-generational family all do a polar bear plunge into the big lake they call Gitchee Gummee. They had a huge driftwood bonfire going to warm up afterwards. Talking to them, they started this family tradition 30+ years ago to escape the commercialism of Black Friday. Cool to see everyone from 70+ grandma down to littlest kids all jumping in.
Zoom in on the beach pic for polar plunge action.
