I understand there's some model disagreements at this point, but after the ridging sets up on Monday/Tuesday, does it look like there may be anything else lined up for the Wed-Fri time period of next week?

Went home and got the furkid and took him up Porter instead.

i love this thread.
Skied my old buddy Raymond today. The top slab was quite variable, sluffed powder in the gut but pretty icy and dusty on crusty out to the skier's right side. The rest of the way was bomb though :ski:
Uploading pictures is messed up right now, I'll get to it once the site allows for them to be uploaded.
I can do this for now; http://www.facebook.com/video/video....43870&comments
Good amount of wind damage up high. Mid elevation W/NW aspects skiing faster that that last few days.

How do you input photos directly to the thread without having to click on them to open a new window in order to view them? Thanks in advance.

Big thanks to mc_roon for showing me some super fun spots yesterday.

very sensitive cornices building up on N facing ridges was what we found today. wasn't on anything crazy to get it to slide below but they were popping off very easily. snow was fucking excellent, got my 3m probe all the way in and wasn't quite at the bottom i don't think. dug a pit and did a couple quick tests, nothing too scary going on besides some pretty easy shears in the new snow, maybe 12 inches down, that i don't think would propagate more than a sluff (could probably entrain quite a bit of snow on the right slope though). obviously after today this doesn't mean much but that density inversion that was failing a few inches down i could see causing problems with a bunch of new snow on top.
The photo uploader works now. Here's the photos from yesterday's Raymond mission. Anybody got beta on the SnoBowl (Flagstaff, AZ) backcountry? I'm flying to Phoenix to pick up a truck and driving back tomorrow, pm me if you got any suggestions. It'll probably be too tempting not to just pin it back North to ride 40" of the greatest snow on Earth though :fmicon:

The top flake looked way tastier from afar than it actually rode... Better off riding the gut if you ever get up there.

Will be in Park City from Sunday (February 27th) to Saturday (March 5th) and planning to spend most days at Alta/Snowbird (but open to exploring). I'd love to get in a mid-week cat day (not planning on bringing AT gear). Anyone else interested in meeting up for something like that?
Any mags already have something set up for next week and need one or two more fun people that can keep up?
If anyone loves playing tour guide at Alta or Snowbird, I'd love to get to know the mountains from a local mag!
UDOT's plan for tonight is to close Little Cottonwood Canyon at 2200.
Tomorrow avalanche control work will begin around 0700. Make sure to stay away from all North side avalanche paths above the highway in LCC at that time.
Estimated road opening is 0830.
BCC should stay open tonight.
The plan for Big Cottonwood canyon tomorrow is weather dependant, closures are possible there too if tonight's forecast high ends. Please respect all closures you come across.
Thanks -b.
thanks to ullr for this past week and the new storm! seems like everyone got their fair share of turns. was super impressed with the sincere efforts of the mountain to keep the pow in place.
Probably a given based on that statement, but I take it there will be no brief early morning road opening?Quote:

lots of windloading at mid-elevation this afternoon. the good news is i didn't see my legs the entire run down.
today was unreal.
wind was howling over the ridgetops this afternoon, super sensitive cornices. avy conditions tomorrow will be seriously gnarly.
A few good turns were had on this day..just a little fun out in hidden canyon

All this snow and ya'll's got nothin'? Well here's my two cents; its still riding pretty good. I wish these warm temperatures weren't gonna creep in early next week, kinda sucks. Snow was super inverted too, easy to stay on top of. We just went in to bear trap and the willows, definitely could've ventured into to bigger terrain but it was a nice exploration. Didn't see any thing in the way of danger.
Here's a coupla shots. Bring the stoke fools :wookie:

Saw some avy photos in Mineral Basin this weekend that might be useful to y'all. Powderbirds/Snowbird Patrol dropped bombs along the ridge and set of the following.
Elevation is around 10,500-11,000. North facing. The slide lookers left ran down thorough ALL the chutes in the Bookends. Debris ended up roughly 200 yards from the base of the Mineral Chair (large creek bed between the two). Snow safety mentioned that it slid on "the ice layer 6-8 feet down" I'm guessing that's from the rain event a few weeks ago but I'm sure APD or others may chime in with more pertinent info.
Interestingly the south facing slopes must have been pretty stable because they opened some steep south chutes right at 9am but kept the north facing closed all day.

Yeah those slides in Mineral looked crazy...and BIG....surely the MLK rain event they slid on..whats most interesting is how the one past hillary step kind stepped up over the traverse when it slide...skier compaction at work there i'd imagine. Sucks that MLK layer is still pestering us.
Good amount of wind jacked snow in the typical spots.

Creamy fast snow all the way down to 210 on the shady side of the road.

was replaced by windbuff/jacked sensitive wind drifts and variable funk crusts
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y19...m/P2282526.jpg
pretty obvious and managable with ski cuts only entailing new storm and winddrifted snow.
Similiar results off top of west bowl nw into days.
benson & hedges a bit chaulky and widbuffed, apron variable wind jack but
lower held rippled wind waved pretty soft consistent snow
best snow/turns lower dav and nw sheltered trees
also observed an interesting chimney cap

Yeah, even the slopes that escaped yesterdays southwest winds and were skiing well early AM today got jacked by another brief wind event later on, leaving only the more sheltered slopes.
The MLK crust dates back to the middle of January, if so, then maybe some of the reports suggesting that particular threat is diminishing might be premature, although it did require explosives to trigger it. Today's avi report characterized it as breaking 6 feet deep in steep, rocky, unsupported slopes that were loaded by the strong south winds on Friday.
heard about an in bounds slide at alta today. ripped out of baldy shoulder, two people caught, zero buried. i didn't witness it, just heard about it from others. be careful out there sounds like that MLK rain crust is making its presence felt.
oh and this weekend was double D titties all up in yo grill. friday in bear trap=deepest pow i've skied all year. rest of the weekend i was treated to in bounds though i did venture into silly fork for a glory last run on sunday and boy was it glorious!

^Great shots Jim! That Bunnels dranage is gnarley.
SLC mags what up? Im heading from the east coast this sat. Land early and planing to ride that day. How are things looking out there, any suggestions on good spots to hit for the week? Heading out with a few non mag friends and have a 5 day super pass. Hope to get blow away. Any chance of getting a tour of one the mtns while Im out there?
still some good skiing to be had out there. skied the most west, north-facing couloir (but not the perlas) in little cottonwood this morning. booter/skinner is in so get after it, monkey see monkey do. even had two monkeys, drive past us after we were done, stop, turn around, ask my buddy about it and then start to boot up to go ski it. it was a wow moment for me, especially considering the time (11am). but that's just the wasatch, i guess:rolleyes2
Sweet, good news then. Im so stoked to head out there even though the EC is having an epic season. A lil jealous you have all that terrain in your back yard and can hit it whenever you want. Cant wait to get some deep fresh. Not sure if this is kosher but, any local burnouts down to make some turns, maybe help a brother out while Im there? Dont feel like bringing a crazy stash with me, but will have some nice treats with me.
