This thread reminded me that the Golf Alltrack 6 spd manual recently became available. Managed to find one--in my preferred platinum/dark brown colors even--in Reno. Driving it home in a few mins. Super tall 6th gear + 199 ft lb torque at something like 1600 rpm = road trip machine.

This was my rental last week in Switzerland. 2017 530d (auto). Mine was the "sport" version with bigger tires, effects, blah. The amount of whiz bang was my remarkable. Pretensioners on the seat belts. Can steer for you and keep you in the lane. Instant torque. Was a really nice ride.

^^^^^ 3 pedals, I like it. There is a rather inexpensive tune that will get you to 250hp with premium gas. I would be all over that.
Yeah the $599 stage 1 APR gets you around 240 Hp and a big torque bump but doesn't exceed the rating on the GTI clutch this manual allroad comes with.
It's just a 3400 lb car. Not some Audi or Merc 4000 lb wagon

I'm going to take the R in for the APR stage 2 programming next spring... There's no way the stock clutch will handle stage 1 for any period of time, and since I'll be due for brakes and summer tires at that point anyway, stage 2 is only a downpipe upgrade away. There's a haldex controller that I got to play with in a mk6, but that unit was like $3k installed. Don't need >50% power to the rear that badly. I've really liked the Potenza S001 tires, but would consider an alternative... Pilot Super Sports maybe? There's talk on various forums about upgrading the engine and suspension mounts, but that seems like it is probably overkill for a daily driver. Wouldn't mind adding a little lateral bracing through. I think I'm good with the stock exhaust... The alternatives I really like are $2500+ and I don't like them that much. The "DD's mom has change for a nickel" and "My other car is an Audi RS6 Avant Quattro 6 speed diesel wagon with a thule box" are a given.
Obviously, this will be a quick car 0-60, but I really want to maintain or improve the car's overall balance of power and agility, and I want to do it without loosening any dental work when the dirt roads are in shitty condition. I've considered selling this car and getting a '17 with the Dynamic Chassis Control system to alleviate some of that, but I'm not convinced it'd be worth it, especially since I'd never make the suspension significantly stiffer - just a little softer occasionally.
With that in mind, what other upgrades/modifications should I consider?
Yeah it doesn't have the articulation for some people. But for snow covered roads I bet it could be fun

Funny you should say. I had it into my local Saab guy and he did the airbag replacement while it was there without me even asking. He is one of the most honest guys I've dealt with. BobMc gave the recco as he doesn't specialize in Saab. Saab goes to Boyd's automotive in sandy, and the tundra goes to BobMc. Both standup shops if you're in the SLC area.Quote:

The local hitch place says they can't even order a hitch for my car even though online I find many.
I guess since its the s-line with the dual exhaust etc they actually have to lower the exhaust to install a hitch. Seems like alot just to have a bike rack on the back instead of the roof.
They won't offer you much since value for a 06+ Saab 9-5 is $3-$5K. They might be one of the best values out there for a euro wagon right now if you have any mechanical abilities to fix some easy gremlins.Quote:

I don't know about Gremlins really. Saabs are just quirky. I have to start weighting the costs of repairs. Got a manifold gasket that's bad. Close to $400. Just did a $885 brakes, rotors (front), and a new oil pan couple weeks back. Figure I'm into her about $2500 and I have had her just about 1.5years. there was some needed stuff that was neglected or not noticed by previous mechanic (was not a Saab guy), but she was a free hand me down, so it's not horrible. I think she's pretty strong, shit just starts breaking at this age. Good mechanic is worth their weight in gold for a car like a Saab.Quote:
