Built a bit of an odd bird this week - 16" 6.5 Creedmoor in an AR-10 platform. With a full-mass carrier, the thing comes to about 7.5 lbs. People report ~2500 ft/sec with a 142 gr projectile out of a 16" barrel, so it should be sonic out to 1700 yds at our 6300' altitude.

It's a midlength gas system, but I think I'll be able to make it run right between the adjustable gas block and a few tweaks to the buffer/spring. I'm still waiting on the right wrench to torque down the barrel nut, but hopefully I'll be able to break it in on Monday.

But what kind of optic does one put on a rifle that's light enough to hump around yet has an effective range of a mile? Interesting times we live in.

Found a good review of my cheap gun. Made me feel a little more confident I made a good purchase for the limited use.

It's copperhead mating season and my state leads the nation in venomous snake bites. We have them everywhere, can show up in pretty much anyone's yard. In the past I've just stood a safe distance and tossed sticks and rocks at them to persuade them to slither under the fence to the neighbor's yard.

I was wondering.. Would the police write me up for killing one with bird shot? Ground is soft and grassy. not rocky so doubt we'd spray beyond the target if pointing downward enough. Maybe if I yelled "LOOKOUT!!! HE'S COMING RIGHT AT US!!!"?

Up til now a shovel or ho is the weapon of choice for dealing with the ones that won't slither away when confronted with rocks and sticks. Anyone ever have a legit non human intruder reason to fire a 12 gauge inside city limits that the cops would approve?

It varies by jurisdiction. 5 acres is the cut off around here, that and clear back ground IE a huge hill not your neighbors garage.

Use a shovel.

Wouldn't the Snipe Shot shells I've already got work just as well?

On the serious side, I could give the .177 Co2 pistol or pump rifle a go. Probably just piss it off though hahahaha..

I have no idea if this works on Copperheads, but it works with Rattlesnakes:

I was living in a small cabin outside of Darby MT and I kept having Rattlesnakes hanging around. I got to thinking "what do Rattlesnakes eat ?" The answer is mice. I got a cat and I never saw anymore snakes.

Got a really good cat.. Feral cat who was born under our back porch. My daughter used to sit on the porch and toss her mom and her siblings chunks of tuna after she was weened. Damned thing started coming in the doggie door and the hound dog was too old to care by then. So, we got her fixed and vaccinated. No more rats or mice... But with snakes... SHE BRINGS THEM IN THE HOUSE LIVE TO PLAY WITH and torture to death slowly. Granted, don't see nearly as many bigger ones since she joined the posse. As for the others from her colony, the younger pit bull rescue isn't as tolerant of other cats. They've moved a couple houses away.

Ok.

Looking to get back in to serious, but non-competitive bullseye pistol. Have owned a lot of handguns for sport shooting in the past. Fave was a SS Target Ruger Mark III 22 45 with simple iron sights.

Anyway, grandkids are no longer living with us, so am assuming it is safe to own one. (Yes, I have a gun safe, but kids get into the damnest things.)

Have narrowed it down to two $250 pistols: Beretta Neos or GSG 1911 22. Gunsmith friend does my trigger work for cheap, so trigger not an issue.

Thoughts?

Alright, so I'm slowly realizing that 21 year old me was silly in spending any money on my SW Sd9VE Sigma, and after shooting some Glocks and the M&P shield, I'm starting to look for something new. Will be an occasional carry piece, mostly for hunting, but looking to start carrying more regularly. Here in UT its not so much bears as it is cats and tweakers that are the concern, but may end up in MT or ID hunting in the near future. The easy fix is two guns, but not sure the wallet likes that idea right now.
I liked both the shield and the glock 29, 43 pretty well. Thinking of going to a .40 over a 9, but would love to hear the collectives opinion on these weapons. I doubt the Sigma is worth anything so that may just end up being the hunting carry since its kind of a beater anyways.

Get a 9 over a .40 for protection and glock as the manufacturer. There is a reason the FBI now uses the 9mm. 124 HST's or heavier depending on the barrel. If you are to hunt then you should use at least a 10mm.

I'd go 45 and spray if large bears are high on your possible encounters list. Getting off the perfect kill shot on a bear charging you at 40 mph while you're falling backwards to get out of the way is a pretty challenging task. A medium caliber hit anywhere except the heart or brain is just going to piss off a large grizzly.

Not sure why the .45 recommendation for bear. Spray then 10mm or .44 (340 gr loads in my .44 at 1,400 fps are not something I shoot at the range every trip).

I carry a light .357 for wolf and cat country.
