Probably partly open in the morning and most likely all open very quick. After all it's not like they have to secure the area or anything.....Quote:

edit: didn't notice temps and wind. That might be what keeps them from opening alltogether or at least closing above P2.
Well, I've got my flights and accommodation (in Grenoble - probably should have kept trying for somewhere closer but got tired of it) sorted for the weekend.
Wildstyle - I'll give you a call.
Grenoble will leave you with a load of options if you an get out of bed early and have access to a car.
considering the development: i wonder if they open at all ;)
but everyting after friday is still uncertain right now. the ammounts and the possible storm and most important: the storm track. several hundred km south or north may decide over snow levels and precip.
it WILL snow in the western alps, but it is yet uncertain where and how much.
I think I'd only want to play between midstation and P1 in those conditions anyway...
pfft pussy.
nothing beats a trifide 3 straightline in zero vsibility ! :D
Or get Mulletizer to aim you vaguely at the Freaux.Quote:

O wise European weather oracle (aka Subtle Plague): what is the long range forecast for this month (March), in particular end of March?
although you call me oracle, i pretend to be a amateur weather geek. so no long range foretellings from me. :)
(and i do not have a clue sorry)
but according to the next week the base should be nice in the western alps ;)

...TeleAl and bbirtle rip up Les Diableretes during the last storm...
My prediction is that there will be wind/snow/sun/cloud/rain between now and the end of april and then most of the snow will melt ...Quote:

if it's still snowing hard on sunday, i wouldn't bother getting a guide until at least monday/tuesday.
but, insults aside... if anyone is out in la grave and fancies meeting up, give me a call. my number is +33679405378. it would be good to meet up and ski with any new maggots
snowing all day here.
not heavy, but snowing.
I'll definitely hook up with you.Quote:

I will definitley be doing la Grave and will call you to arrange the day. I'll PM you my mobile ...
does anyone have a place to crash ? from wednesday /thursaday onward ? :)
if it stops by wednesday...... hrr hrr
oh and edit: the green bars indicate precip. usualy you can translate the milimeters into 1.5x centimeters of snow. (varies between 1 and 2 depending on moisture)
adding up this makes ~125mm or about 150cm+ (there is some compacting because of the several days) new snow. forget those minibars of less than 2mm. they usually just vanish without a trace.
Dunno exactly what layering / wind deposition was like so I can't comment on that, but that sure was a lot longer closure than what is normal. Could have to do with french holidays, crowds and the resulting pressure and amount of people not able to make sound decisions themselves. Or something.Quote:

I am jealous. But it is snowing in the Wasatch right now. :)
i just got religious and started praying ....
snow forecast's prediction for les deux / la grave keeps on improving.
snow still forecast for thurs/Fri/Saturday. Saturday is looking better and better with a small weather window on Sunday. The freezing level keeps on dropping and so does the wind ....
If it pans out like this, la grave could be epic on Sat and possibly bluebird on Sunday morning ...

Hell, it's still snowing in Delft, NL so there seems to be a big chill coming from the North... Should be good for the alps. Now go get it.
praise Ullr! it's gonna stay cold! /antijinxQuote:

well thislink was not downgraded.
compare 12h and 60h for snow levels in france.
http://imk-ifu.fzk.de/de/wetter/15km...km.htm#pagetop
la grave has changed 100cm !
ok there won't be 500cm as it may indicate.(it caculates elevation so the heights are a bit over the top) but the changes are quite accurate !
or watch the new snow every 6 hours. (same link, just click "wetterprognosen "and then "schneehöhenänderung alle 6h") at least three times (in 6 hours!!!) 20-30cm of fresh.
knee deep at leysin today. snowed almost all day on top of that too. windy on top but not much wind below that. just gobs of fluffy goodness everywhere. :D
Anyone seen the sat image?

Good morning Maggots!
It's Friday 03 March 2006.
The weather is snowing and blowing.
Find trees and drag lifts.
Snowing in Amsterdam, not like that does anyone any good though.
storm arrived last night around midnight but came in warm and wet with foehn winds. -1C at 2000m. 70-100kph winds expected today, tonight winds are expected to increase to 150kph.
be careful out there. i'm sitting today out.
Same here in Rotterdam.Quote:

I'm loading my Espace up for the journey to Grenoble tonight. i think i need to take less stuff. 5 of us are going down there but we're bringing 11 pairs of skis and 2 snowboards......
I'm glad i've got the biggest roof box i could find.
On another note, what are the driving conditions in and around grenoble at the moment ?
this is worth checking out...
My (possibly dubious) assumption is that freezing levels are due to rise well above the valley floor so it should be OK until the final climb up to LDA.Quote:

be careful this weekend.
from pistehors.com....
Quote:
The fresh snow, rising temperatures and strong winds from the west have moved the avalanche risk to Extreme (5/5) in the Savoie and Haute-Savoie departments for Saturday. Météo France has warned all backcountry travellers to avoid any steep routes (>30 degrees) and even on low angled routes travellers should keep well clear of any steep slopes above, especially routes traversed by known avalanche couloirs.
Some roads and habitations could be threatened although Météo France say conditions are far from exceptional. Off Piste skiing and ski touring should be avoided in most circumstances this weekend. Under no circumstances duck ropes in resort or ski closed runs. The risk is High in the Isère and Hautes-Alpes departments. There have already been 44 avalanche deaths in France this season:
