Sick day at AltaBird. Treated myself and upgraded my 'Bird pass to ski Alta today too, though I was a little bummed Devil's Castle was closed.
The 10-12" of new in upper LCC skied well on NE & SE aspects around 9k although we could still feel the bottom in most spots.

:the_finge And fuck Alta, ya I said it. Fuck em
Today was grand, good day to have legs, and lungs, and things of the sorts.
Here's some shots I gathered today, I'm too tired for the video, it'll be up sooner or later..

Ah man, I wish I could claim it. I was a bit further west. I need a pants sponsor after this personal FSD though. It ripped the shell lining right off my butt. Maybe I'll start using garbage bags er somethin'.

I wasn't motivated to haul my skis up there. I did take the camera though...

Closure in Little Cottonwood Canyon tonight (2/19/11) from 6:30pm to 8:00pm for control work in the Mid- Canyon area. Please stay clear of south facing avalanche paths and the highway from Maybird to Snowbird Entry 1 until after control work is finished and the road is re-opened.
There is also a high likelyhood of AM control work again tomorrow morning (2/20/11) in Little Cottonwood canyon. This will be determined before 5:00am tomorrow morning. This site will be updated when the decision is made.
If for some reason this site is not updated, you can also check http://www.udot.utah.gov/avalanche for UDOT control work updates
as well as calling the hotline at 801.975.4838
Cheers!
Just enough wind that it filled every line by the time we lapped it! I don't know if it was just that I hadn't been able to get out for 5 days, but today was just so much fun!
Thanks for the updates!
The Little Cottonwood Canyon road will be closed at 6:00 am this morning (2/20/11) for avalanche control. Please stay clear of the hwy and all south facing highway avalanche paths until after the road has been reopened. Anticipated opening time is around 8:30 am.
Thanks.
sleeping in!
Hit a not-so secret spot this morning. There were a few other folks there as well. It blew my mind away

Expected this little guy to pop out, didn't really go anywhere but a good reminder of what we're dealing with

CT's were pulling out several clean sheers within the storm snow on N-NW aspects around 9k. Some cracking noticed on higher more wind affected terrain.

In addition we observed that trailhead parking lots were last priority in getting plowed this morning.

het thats the uni bomber! anti here here in utah
broke trail up usa bowl this morning before work. no propagation in any of our tests but columns were popping very easy.
definitely wouldn't want to be on the north facing stuff though.
Today was ridiculous :fmicon:
Broke trail up that sum' bitch Mineral, the previous day's skin was barely visible. Definitely got some snow to move off the ridges, skiing East faces. The snow was so deep that you needed 10 other tracks to be able to get back down to the summer trail. Waist depth turned into armpit depth (I'm pretty short though) within hours. Deepest backcountry turns I've ever made.
It was good to run into a Solitude O"G" today, keepin the stoke alive
Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention; today's snowboarder/skier ratio in all of the Mineral Fork today was 8/2 :yourock:

Better than gettin' butt fucked ... And homeboy was probably skiing South facing low elevation, because it was good, everywhere.
ANYWAYS, if any of ya'll were wondering how long you might be done skiing if you happen to break, oh say, your femur, whilst skiing goods in the early season... you might be back skiing waist deep powder snow by, oh say, February 21.. You may recall this conversation from Thanksgiving. Here's proof;

Jay is the man! No obs to report other than it looked like a bitch breaking trail up flagstaff from the collins lifteline this morning...
glad y'all got a nice shot of snow. that sun is so damn strong out there. never ceased to amaze me at how it affected the south sides of the compass even during deep dark jan.
twas kinda cool tho during periods of long mid winter high pressure spells to be able to ski supportive corn on se facing and deep (enough) protected recrystalized potatoe chips on mid/high north shady. extended high pressure is nice for crowd control too.
enjoy the bounty! steep firm here at the moment, it's all good:)

You used to live in Utah?
Sunday was the Sick.
No time for photos or video? Couldn't you bring along a military grade laptop and upload your shit on the tram ride up? Or is it too crowded/agro to do so? Or you could head back to Alta and upload while waiting in the lift lines? I guess I'm just too much of a whore that I find the time after spending 90% of my time going up, the other 2% being going down (aka icing on the cake) and the remaining 8% spent on whoring out how fucking SICK it was that day.

Dillydallyed around yesterday and tried to head up for an afternoon tour but I observed a unified donut muncher blocking canyon acess told me there were to many people in the canyon and it wasn't safe for me to be there. When asked he couldn't tell me the exact danger the crowds posed but just that it was not safe for me to enter. Sure am glad the extra $$$ from my unified police bill in additionto taxes is going to keeping me safe from the hordes of gaper tourists.:rolleyes2 first time I've observed that safety manuver.
storm snow settling nicely
Observed sizable debris and large fracture line off shoulder of sunrise in upper broads from storm cycle natural.
Eniee meanies skied well a few collapses and some hollow wind drifts on ridge line but overall pretty good stability
Anybody want to ski canyons slackcountry tomorrow? Here w/ family for the next several days, would love to get out with someone who knows the area well. Edibles for your troubles :)
Just awesome win for the last few pages. Way to go all.
Looks like Fri/Saturday will be similarly awesome as the next big system plows into UT starting Thurs afternoon.
