Sorry if I was crabby from being wiped out, I came home and took a shower and a nap and now I'm a little better...but on to packing, YAY.
Will, great to ski with you again, and thanks for taking those photos.
Today was almost as good as yesterday. The wind loading made it feel sort of like just as much fresh as Saturday. Exterminator & my Northback run win the awards of the day. It was definitely the best two day run for me of the year with two insanely awesome days. I just wish I didn't have to go to Cali for work tomorrow at 6 am, arg.
Monique: Sorry to have missed ya...it twasn't the same w/o you & GS!! Howz about next weekend? Will you be home?
I'm in the same boat. This time tomorrow I'll be in Hawaii.Quote:

Cliff, you probably won't even have to go OB to find seriously deep snow. I couldn't believe how fast it was piling up. After Gabe left, fubar and I rode Forest Queen up again then parted ways as he needed to get his kid and I needed to empty my kidneys. I took one more ride up Chair 6 and it was blowing and snowing so hard you couldn't see more than 50 yards and they had the chair running at half speed. I called it a day at that point, the wind was so strong you could easily ski uphill and my wet gloves had lost their insulating power. There was actually shin deep soft pow on lower bull run and down at the bottom, about 100 yards from the base lodge it had piled up enough that you couldn't tell where the groomer track ended. I skied too far off to the side, my left ski went off the track and the deep snow snatched that ski right off my leg. When I got to the base area people were saying they'd closed Rex and it was only about 3. On my way to the B lot I heard them start bombing right above us and really close, probably on those cliffs below exterminator. I bet Snorting Elk, Right Angle, Grubstake, Sunnyside, East Powder Bowl, Bear Pits, Exterminator, and Campbell Basin will all be $$$$ tomorrow you lucky SOB!
Now please excuse me, I must get some sleep so's tomorrow I can shovel mud and haul pipe around in the rain with great efficiency... :frown:
Heh! Needed a little primping did she? :biggrin:Quote:

I was not a good citizen today.... but a better person for it.
Great to see the massive 05-06 winter still going off, and everyone gittin some..and then some!! Wow, 16 new at Xtal in the last 7 hours, and 11 at Alpental...but it looks to be close to rain at Xtal base....
I missed yesterday, as I drove to Whistler. I has some customers to see on the way up. But today, skiied with powder11, postman, samwich, Richard, and Atrain and had an epic day. Pics and TR later on a new thread. It is nuking in town, 6 inches outside already, gonna be epic on the hill tomorrow. Max 85 cm in the 48 hr Whistler forecast....yummm!!
22 inches of snow overnight at Baker. 24 in the last 24 hours...
Fuck, another 16" overnight @ Xtal. I do my job because I love it, but sometimes it's damned inconvenient...
I'm sitting here, sweating out the minutes until 3:30 when I will literally jump through the glass window, get my gear, and get on a fllight to take me to Seattle this evening for what looks like four of the sickest days imaginable at Cryatal!!!!
As of now we don't have a truck rented, how sketchy is the drive from Seattle to Crystal with all this weather? My friend lives at 3,000 ft., but he said the 10 mile drive to the mountain every morning might be dicey. What do you all think? To truck or not to truck?
37 degrees at the base of crystal this am.
Lots of new, cement, at the top.
glad I got it this weekend.
See yas on saturday. Maybe friday if I can pull off a sick day.
The access road can be bad, especially when crowded. At the very least, get chains or cables. awd if you can.Quote:

Buster, sounds good, I also plan to be there ridiculously early. I'll have blue patagucci jacket, tan pants, powder pluses, and black leedom helmet with First Chair magazine sticker on the side. Not to mention a pair of mismatched poles that make children cry. Hope to see you there.
Check. And to pump ya up some more, check this (from http://www.nwac.noaa.gov/products/SABNW with measurements in water)

In the 24 hours ending at 4 AM this Monday morning, precipitation
amounts have been 1.5 to 2.5 inches throughout the Cascades,
except that Crystal Mtn has gotten 3.75 inches and the Mt. Hood
area has gotten 1 to 1.3 inches. New snow accumulations have been
10 to 20 inches. However, last night freezing levels spiked
upward with a warm front passage, and that caused snowfall to
change to rain below 4000 to 5000 feet.
....
SNOW LEVELS--CASCADE MTNS
4000 ft N, 5000 ft C, 5500 ft S early Monday morning
3000 ft N, 3000 ft C, 3500 ft S later Monday morning
2000 ft N, 2500 ft C, 3000 ft S Monday afternoon and night
1500 ft N, 2000 ft C, 2500 ft S Tuesday morning and aftn
2500 ft N, 4000 ft C, 6000 ft S Tuesday night, except snow
levels near the surface Cascade passes and east slopes Tuesday
night
...
EXTENDED WEATHER DISCUSSION FOR WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY
On Wednesday another short wave and cold front system should move
over the Cascades with the jet over central Oregon. This should
bring continued snowfall. Snowfall should be moderate from Mt.
Rainier northward, and light for the southern Cascades and Mt.
Hood area. On Thursday, a very weak short wave with so-so
moisture and zonal flow aloft should bring snow showers
throughout the mountain area. Then by Friday, ridging and surface
high pressure may bring the first dry day of the week. Stay tuned
though, because another system may be poised to move in by
Saturday morning.
EXTENDED FORECAST FOR WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY.
Wednesday: Cloudy with moderate snowfall likely in the northern
mountain areas, and light snow for the southern Cascades.
Thursday: Cloudy, snow showers all areas.
Friday: Partly cloudy, and chance for minor scattered snow
showers at higher elevations.
SNOW LEVELS
2-3000 ft N, 2500-3500 ft S Wednesday and Thursday
2-3000 ft N, 4-6000 ft S Friday

Looks like the lower mountain got rain, but don't worry, all the goods are above 5000. You've picked a great time.
I love it when NWAC gets all technical-n-shit.Quote:

Latest from NOAA indicates winter storm warning to continue into tonight:
WEST SLOPES NORTHERN CASCADES AND PASSES-
WEST SLOPES CENTRAL CASCADES AND PASSES-
618 AM PST MON JAN 30 2006
...HEAVY SNOW WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 PM PST THIS
EVENING ABOVE 2500 FEET..
A HEAVY SNOW WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE CASCADES ABOVE
25O0 FEET UNTIL 10 PM PST TONIGHT.
THE SNOW HAD CHANGED OVER TO RAIN OR A RAIN SNOW MIX EARLY THIS
MORNING AS A WARM FRONT MOVED ACROSS THE AREA. THIS WARMING WILL
BE SHORT LIVED HOWEVER BECAUSE AN APPROACHING COLD FRONT WILL
BRING COLDER AIR BACK INTO THE AREA LATER THIS MORNING. THUS
ANTICIPATE THE SNOW LEVEL TO DROP BACK DOWN TO NEAR 2000 FEET.
MEANWHILE...INCREASING WESTERLY FLOW DURING THE DAY WILL HELP
ENHANCE SNOWFALL RATES WITH BURSTS OF HEAVY SNOW OCCURRING THIS
AFTERNOON AND EVENING. TOTAL STORM AMOUNTS OF 1 TO 3 FEET ARE
LIKELY...WITH THE HEAVIER AMOUNTS OCCURRING ABOVE THE 4500 FOOT
LEVEL.
THE SNOW WILL TAPER OFF SOMEWHAT OR BECOME LIGHTER OVERNIGHT
BEFORE INCREASING AGAIN TUESDAY AS YET ANOTHER STRONG PACIFIC
STORM SYSTEM HEADS TOWARD THE AREA.
THE FOLLOWING ARE STORM TOTALS THUS FAR.
MOUNT BAKER...21 INCHES
CRYSTAL MOUNTAIN...16 INCHES
SNOQUALMIE PASS...14 INCHES
PARADISE...14 INCHES
STEVENS PASS...12 INCHES
PEOPLE PLANNING TRAVEL IN THE CASCADES SHOULD BE READY FOR
HAZARDOUS WINTER DRIVING CONDITIONS.
Freaking sucks. I was all set to take myself on a date today and now it's a no go. LAME!Quote:

I was all set for a big Crystal day today, but the upper mountain is being wind hammered (60 mph gusts) and thus only the lower mountain chairs are open.
Also, the freezing level peaked on us last night. So, the lower mountain got rained on.
I just hope the freezing level held on in the passes and above 5500ft' 'cause I haven't gotten any from this storm yet. :frown:
2 hours and I'm out! we've rented a ford focus, no joke. I told SPC I was concerned and he said, "don't sweat it man, they rally race these things." When I asked him if Budget optioned him the rally package he laughed and said "I'm the rally package mofo!!" and the made a revving engine noise. this should be good.
get chains for that thing
he took one up to Alpine last year and didn't run into any trouble even in storm conditions so he feels confident about the vehicle. I plan to have a leather strap to bite down on when everything goes bezerk, followed by a tallboy.
That just made my morning.Quote:

Seems like cheap insurance when compared to getting stopped at chain control, towed, ticketed, wrecking car or ruining your trip. I saw three front wheel drive vehicles spin off Crystal mountain blvd right in front of me this weekend they joined the already substantial collection laying on their sides in the snow.
rally cars on snow and ice use the gnarliest, hand siped, studed tires that you've ever seen - not common or garden all seasons.
WA State Patrol were requiring chains on 4WD vehicles in places this morning.
Any chance that the Alpy snow will survive the warming? I think I can pull of a morning escape to Alpy, but heading to Xtal may require more stars to align.
Is there a wireless connection anywhere at Crystal? Anyone else heading to Alpy or Crystal on Tuesday?
(Tuesday(Buster, Early)->Crustal == 1), provided the checkin for all these files goes OK today.Quote:

BH: Lift line at 8:30? 8:15? Ealier?
PNWbrit, we just have to make it to our friend's house, which is 10 miles from the mountain. From there my buddy and his two friends should lead the charge to the mountain in the 4WD trucks. His house is at 3,000 feet so that should be all rain from what I've seen.
