Wow those are some beauties! Are you sure that they are goldens? They kind of look like Western Slope Cutties in full spawn attire. Here is a pix of a golden, and as you can see they tend to be a little more “golden”.Quote:

Yeah, I’d leave them alone until it cools off. Usually a water temp above 68 is deadly for rainbows (browns can tolerate a little warmer temp). But, if you must go, try to fish early in the morning.Quote:

yes they are goldens, a pure strain in an isolated lake in the Wind Rivers. They are mature, the smaller fish (i can see your hand in that net), look like that, but those puppies pictured above are 2 to 3lbs and spawning.Quote:

We have Colorado Cutt's, Bear (Bonnevill) River Cutts, Snake River Cutts, and Yellowstone Cutts in the region, but these are goldens, the smaller fish I caught look more like the one pictured above.

OK, I have dabbled in fly fishing for a few years. Mostly on inland lakes (shore and Boat) for Bass, pan fish. Every once in a great while I'll make it to a trout stream.
I'm looking to get a 5wt, good for trout, good for bass, heavy for pan fish....
The question is on length?
I'm looking at a TFO Lefty Pro or finesse, just not sure how long to go...

I took your advice and got yard work done instead of fishing, damn! We're in a hot and dry streak so it looks like the fishing is going on the back burner for a couple weeks. I'm set up to guide a fellow in early Sept and again in late Sept so I have plenty of time for some scouting before hand. The one guy's never fished before, oh joy, so he'll be happy catching the little guys and getting a bunch of pictures, the late Sept trip is a group from the National TU and they will expect a lot more. Hopefully we'll get some rain and cooler temps and get the activity level back up. I should preface this by adding that I'm only a guide on paper, gives me the opportunity for good discounts from the various companies, and I make a little over the season to pay for my trout addiction.Quote:

Absolutly 9 foot! It will make mending real easy, and makes wind less of a factor. The only down side is if you fish in real tight areas. I carry a 7ft 3 wt for smaller streams with a lot of brush on the banks. Even still, I've used it once this year.Quote:

So here what I want to do:
I fish primarily for stripers and large mouth bass. Ranging in size from 15-24 inches (maybe a 28 every now and then) on the striper size. The large mouth fishing I do is in a small lake with plenty of room, so I don't think rod length is an issue. The large mouth range in size up to 2-2.5lbs.
I'd like to keep the large mouth fishing "sporting" while having the ability to work a larger end of the range striper should it come to that. I have a large amount of experience fishing light tackle so I'm confident, as I get the hang of this method, I'll be able to work larger fish on lighter tackle.
So the question is, what rod/reel specs would fit?

^^^^^Yup. Here's a link with some pretty good combo prices. A 6 weight will be perfect for what you described. I'd get a rod that has a fighting butt and a reel with a quality disc drag, quick pick up speed and sealed bearings. Personally, I am really getting addicted to the 10’ rods by Sage for lake fishing (the extra leverage allows you to put a little more oomph on the fish when needed). Tend to be pretty $$$ though.

you might want a second spool for your reel too. that way you can keep a fast sink line on for stripers and streamer fishing large mouth and have a floating line for large mouths on the surface (poppers, mouse patterns, stuff like that)
Thanks for the follow ups guys. I've got hte Orvis rod and reel sitting in the "basket" waiting to pull the trigger.
Next step I''ll be checking out lines and backing and alt spools as per your rec Fez. I've been wanting to do this for years now and will be psyched once trigger is pulled...now if only I could find some extra $$....

I guess it comes down to the drag systems, the cabelas SLA has cork/Teflon and the Lamson has fully sealed and zero-maintenance conical drag... I going to guess the Lamson is the way to go.
Edit #2 after some googling it seems that the cork and Teflon is a better system. Help!
I have a Redington RS2 4 piece 5wt that I really like. They did have one of the best “no questions asked” warranties that I have used 5 times:nonono2: , but I think it has changed since Sage bought them. The RS2 is a medium action rod that will present a dry fly well, but can be a little soft for the “duck and chuck” when nymphing with a lot of weight and large flies. Overall, it’s a very well rounded rod. A 4 piece is nice cuz you can travel and backpack with it.Quote:

Went out last night down to the Boulder river and got 4 lil' rainbows. 10-12" Fun stuff. Fun fish, they like to fight and jump. And being on the water in this blower heat is nice too.
I just inherited a custom built Wright McGill bamboo 7' two piece flyrod. Had a great uncle that stalked bookies. I had gotten a similar rod from him many years ago, but was always afraid to take it out. The rods were probably built in the 50's as he died in 1965 in a plane crash coming back to Virginia from a duck hunting trip. I used to fish with an old South Bend 3 piece 9' rod about 30 years ago, but haven't played that game in a long time. Maybe time to give it a shot again.

Went up to Idaho to an airplane fly-in over the weekend and wanted to fish so as a last minute desperate measure I stopped by Sportman's Warehouse in Meridian and picked up a WW Grigg 4-piece 4/5wt (fits in little airplane nicely) and an Okuma Magnitude 5/6. Got out for under $170, and only fished for about an hour total on Johnson Creek near the middle fork of the Salmon. My jongness prevailed as I punished bushes and rocks and myself with not even a strike, but I loved it. Plenty to learn now.

Havent read this whole thread, but need some advice on a new rod myself. Currently I have some 5 piece Cabelas Stowaway that I got as a gift....with an LSR2 reel that I think is pretty decent, but the rod is pissing me off. I like to cast with alot of line speed to get the flies out far, and the 5-piece feels flimsy and has a weird flex. Im interested in a 2 piece mostly and fish in the front range (but I might use it in the keys for bones in the future)...
what do you guys suggest?
buy a good quality 4 pc. 2 pc are dead in the water development wise. Fast Action will require a higher end brand prolly.

I agree, I have a 2 pc, 3wt that is my favoite rod-St. Croix Avid 7 ft, great for little spring creeks and brookies. It's just a sweet little thing and I can lay a dry so soft on the water it's a thing of beauty. That said, the two piece rods suck to pack in, can't take them on a plane, though after yeaterday I'm going to need a list of what I can and can't take anymore, and in the last 10 years the mfg's have really done a great job dealing with flex on 4/5 pce rods. I have a 4 pc Legend Ellite that I just love, and it fits in the over head on any plane. Though this spring I ran into a interesting issue, they wouldn't let me bring a spool in my carryon. Apparently there's the fear that I would tie up the crew and passengers? I would be more concerned that I would smack someone with the rod tube, but I didn't say that out loud.
