The only people I see smoking are the lower middle class and poor regardless of age.
I don’t think it’s even been cool to call cigarettes “grits”, I’ve never heard that before.

Check out the popular meme pages on social media, Barstool type feeds, the patio of any establishment that caters to the just-out-of-undergrad crowd to young professional age demo, and you'll see a bunch of smoking and smoking related jokes/memes.
Yeah, the poor and those who like vacationing on the Vegas Strip will still be a large smoking demographic, but the younger trend I've noticed is enough to open my eyes that it's not just a few here or there.

I highly recommend watching "Mulholland Drive" to anyone who hasn't seen it
Not a fan of regulation or being told what to do but at scale (400m people) proof already exists that there’s a large enough % of people who need to be regulated due to poor decision making (see gun thread, see fatty thread, etc). If it’s a thing that’s not hurting others have at it. This one hurts others.
Regulation of the nicotine content is playing the long game - there are many other safer methods to get that drug than butts.
The % of smokers these days seems to be regionally dependent. When I visit Atlanta I am always amazed at the number of smokers. In Bozeman they are a distinct minority.

Curious. When was the last time you were overcome by the smell of cig smoke? What was the length of your exposure? Do you think you now may get cancer as a result?
Smart way to help people would be to require an annual 10% reduction of nicotine in all delivery devices. Similar to requirement to reduce emissions or increase mileage in the auto industry. But I can't remember the last time we did anything smart.
I never smoked, I often call them cancerettes
i've heard them called darts
never heard of cigs called grits
and grits at breaky are unheard of
I noticed in Bali ALL the men smoked but none of the women smoked so I asked my cab driver, he told me " only prostitutes smoke"
a lot of smoking all over the rest of the world
True, although there is a noticeable line of demarcation that follows the Perimeter, way more smokers outside than in (likely the same for any big city). I feel like when I go to NYC, Chicago and certainly Europe the smoking is at way higher levels than I see at home. When I was in Vegas last June it was a big culture shock seeing so many smokers, much less indoors (as good as the mitigation was).
Well actually, the term grit became unpopular after the retirement of Wayne Gritzky, the grit one, in 1999.
I heard grit first from a former teammate at Holiday Valley a million years ago.
Looks like that slang definition has been around since at least 2003 on Urbandictonary:

I had often wondered where all the Tobacco came from and its mostly China/ brazil/ India/ Zimbabwe, USA is down the list a bit
smokinest place i've ever been is out the backdoor of any shitty bar past midnight. back nine of middling country club courses is a close second. followed by turkey, france, and china, in that order.
and yeah, i've also noticed anomalous smoking habits in the two groups bmills mentioned, as well as a few others. one of them being the bozeman-slc-boulder skibum dirtbag contingent who wear those 4 point fleece beanies with the crazy designs and loose fitting shin length jean shorts as some sort of anti fashion statement. otherwise super healthy active folks but yeah, they think cigs are edgy so they smoke. another group ties into bmills' non-nouveau wealthy category and it is the thin black sunglasses wearing urbanite ivy/ivy adjacent skinny chicks i went to boarding school with. my theory for this is since most of them study in europe and want to be like the chic, aloof euro girls they see smoking outside of cafes and clubs, they take up the habit. really any gen z social demographic that fancies itself edgy-jaded-core-etc will have a substantial faction of smokers among its ranks.
Do I think I’ll get cancer from 2nd hand smoke? No, probably from the years I smoked myself if at all.
Nicotine standalone is certainly addictive but not nearly as harmful as ripping butts. And the downstream harm of butts has been discussed ad nauseam up thread. So regulating the thing that makes butts addictive seems ok to me. And maybe in anything that’s combustible for that matter (vapes and whatnot).
Are we arguing or agreeing?
Crap. What’s the point of starting to smoke now?

Gotcha. Personally hate it, and I used to love smoking. Now it immediately sticks to the inside of my mouth the moment I notice it.
No one complained back in the day because it was normalized. Hell my stepdad smoked in the house and in all vehicles, no windows down. We just thought it was normal. I can only imagine how bad I stunk during school.
