I don't usually frequent businesses that require tipping, mostly because I'm cheap. The couple of times a year that the wife and I eat out, I'll usually tip fairly well if the service is decent, mostly because I'd probably suck at it. The only other time I find myself compelled to tip is at the barber. I'll usually leave $15-$20 on a $35 haircut. Most of these kids are in their 20's and they're saving up for a house, car, engagement ring, etc. I remember what it was like to be there. The last time I was there I doubled the amount, the kid had been out for a month after having shoulder surgery. I can't imagine what it was like to be without a paycheck for a month.
