I’m a Dp. I’ve shot films/tv shows with blanks and without. With how good, simple, and cheap Vfx firing looks these days there is almost no reason for blanks to ever be used on set anymore. And even with prop guns without blanks there is still always a protocol where the team is showing everyone on set it isn’t loaded and there are specific rules about where people can point the guns. Tragic. RIP. Should never have happened.
Perhaps more reason for the impending Iatse union strike. Overworked crews make mistakes.

Not that there isn't another way to create this.. but, doesn't the gun blast evoke unique emotional responses facial expressions, etc of the actors on the set? I get that an audio BOOM/BANG at the perfect moment could also do that, just seems harder to time perfectly.

Low budget, long hours, non-union, this sounds like bad, bad shit. When I was working in the trades 30 years ago, 16-18 hour days were normal on commercials, videos, indies. It was literally destroying families and killing people. it was supposed to change, but never did. I hope IATSE members reject the settlement and strike.
And if the production company brought in scabs, that just makes it even more fucked……because Baldwin owns the production company and was a producer on the film. JFC.Quote:

This article says the AD told Baldwin the gun was safe. Which is not normal in my experience.

Mr. Baldwin has cooperated with investigators, a spokesman for the department said. No charges have been filed in the shooting.
While the five-page filing provides many basic logistical details of the shooting, it leaves many questions unanswered — namely how a live round ended up in a gun fired by an actor.
The assistant director “did not know live rounds were in the prop gun,” Detective Joel Cano wrote in the affidavit.
The weapon was “set up” on the tray by the movie’s weapons specialist, or armorer, along with a Western-style gun belt used in the scene. Detective Cano did not say what the armorer told investigators who arrived at the Bonanza Creek resort, where the film was shooting.
Ms. Hutchins, who was 42, was sitting in front of Mr. Souza, the director, watching the scene play out when the projectile struck her, the police said.
The armorer “was given the prop gun after it was fired by actor Alec Baldwin” and “then took the spent casing” out of the weapon before handing it over to the police, Detective Cano wrote.
Mr. Baldwin “was wearing Old Western style clothing during the filming,” and changed into his street clothes before turning over his costume to the department’s evidence technician, he wrote.
“These clothes appeared to have blood stains,” Detective Cano added

I made the mistake of reading the comments on one of the stories, and an alarming, though not surprising number of people are calling for the death penalty (in graphic detail). And they're equally certain that he'll be found guilty of murder, or at least manslaughter, yet also think he'll walk because of some vast liberal conspiracy.
