Chains for all 2WD, you fwd guys can suck my balls.
You know damn well if you leave the door open for fwd, it will get abused just like it is now.

Have they ever put a price tag on 3 lanes both directions, IS to US40 junction?
About 20 miles total of roadway to upgrade to 3 lanes, improve interchanges and redesign some of the curves.
I really think I70's main problem is too many cars on the road. Add in any weather and it's a flat out mess. Tire condition, driver and type of drive system impacts the conjestion I assume, but just too many cars on the road.
I don't know what a solution could be and I think it is going to get worse before it gets better. I doubt Colorado has the money for a major capcity change to I70.
Certainly MPG is a valid reason.
So then if money were no object you would drive an awd or 4wd?
So we're traffic jamming to saving a few dinosaurs and letting people save a bit on gas?
And a Jetta against a 4wd truck is not a fair mpg comparison.
I have a friend with a compact Nissan where you can flip a switch for fwd or awd.
I have not looked, but there have to be a lot of those options out there.
So anyway, fwd fan or not. If the message board said chains or snow tires ALL vehicles, you can choose to carry them or not. Mess up, get a fine. Don't mess up, oh well.
Seems like it would have some positive effect and is free to implement.
What other free ideas are on the table?
Probably should earmark the weed taxes collected directly into I70 solution, who needs schools anyways? ;)
Financially feasible, mentally moronic.
I had a nice ski day today, and a week day or two each week all season, but hey if it snows on Saturday and I want to ski...

Dumping east of the tunnel...multiple car accidents and I70 closed, of course. Can anyone fucking drive in snow anymore??!!
No.
It will the same for downtown Denver. My 20 minute commute home will become 30-40 due to the weather. Everyone could have AWD, FWD or 4x4, dog sled, artic cat or snow cat, but it's just too many vehicles on the road, and add in weather and it's a cluster.
I cannot remember a year where I70 has closed so often, every time it snows. Even in '11.
Looking at cotrip.org, it has this for 285: "Chains, snow tires or 4wd all vehicles and chains all commercial vehicles". I've never seen that before.
Just got in to den from out of town. Tried to leave I -70 shut down at Floyd hill. Reroute to 285...never seen more assholes in full size trucks driving like dipshits
Guess I'm not helping since I'm typing this while driving
285/stopped dead just past aspen hill. I'm so fukd
Mike Genessee on 70 was glaze ice at 2pm, I passed at least 5 multi car pileups. Good luck.
I'm loving all the snow but every pow day recently starts or ends like this

Rideski eek not good. I think coulf maybe be worse now

I think that I-80 in California is the model that we should adopt, in an identical fashion. Chain control stations. BIG fines if you wreck without that stuff. BIG fines if semi's are caught without chains, and BIG fines if semi's are caught passing OUT of the right lane. The 3 years that I lived in Reno convinced me that is the way.
Again, a version of the CA laws. I carried chains for my Chevy Tahoe with All Season M/S tires, but never put them on, never needed to. The Highway Patrol is allowed to ask to see your chains, or to require that ALL vehicles (including 4wd) use them depending on conditions. Also, if you DIDN'T have 4wd/AWD with M/S tires (at least), or chains for your 2WD vehicle or commercial vehicle, you waited until the requirements were lifted. Period. So you end up waiting in line at the check point, but certainly that is better than the current I-70 clusterfuck. This afternoon from Evergreen to C470 was a joke at 2:30. People are the worst drivers ever, and getting worse at bad weather every day.
It's about time. Now they need the giant fines for violators.
Yeah, slick, but decent tires, AWD/4WD and driving skills made it. If you passed 5 at 2, by 2:30 that number was up to 10, including new ones on Hwy 40 where I was. What a joke.
Fkna Hoosier pass in the dark
5mt - check
Turbo producing more power than a 2000 WRX - check
Limited slip - check
Symmetrical AWD - check
More ground clearance than a 2000 WRX - check
Comparing a car less capable than stated above to a snowmobile. You're a fucking idiot. Quit telling people that shit.
took me 3.5 hours from Loveland back to the D. Two 1 hour long stoppages b/c of multi-vehicle accidents. What a clusterfuck.
Chain control stations would require infrastructure, planning, manpower, and vehicle stoppages. I've never experienced it in CA so I don't know and won't argue for or against.
Some people are saying it's different because of Interstate / instate /etc.
So how about just implementing that minus the check stations. TV/News stations would run the message for free. cdot puts it on the message board, free. Could it have any negative effect?
In Truckee/Donner area, it was basically the same as the current chain-up areas here, just manned by one or two patrolmen. The backup for the single lane was the backup, but people who wouldn't make it through were out of the way early in the lineup, then the rest of us got to pass, most of the time without actually having to stop and check. Then the "chain monkeys" had a business that would sell and apply the chains for the people who were too lazy or didn't have any. It really seemed to work much better than the current I-70 situation. I grew up around here and knew no different until my 3 year stint in Reno, but as soon as I saw it I thought it would work GREAT in CO.
Did montanaskier start this thread because he used to ski in Montana (where there is never traffic or people) on a powder day and now he has to deal with I70 (which is always a traffic jam.)
^^^ I probably drive 70 more than anyone else here but it's during the week. In the year plus of back and forths I've had maybe 4 or 5 really bad drives. I've had about 3 times I've gone around due to VP closures. The worst was last summer on Fridays with W bound traffic being stacked for miles. I'm lucky that I'm typically not in Denver on Monday or Friday.
CDOT is testing buses on the shoulders for the next three weekends:
http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_25...ffic-shoulders
Buses? I can't remember the last time I saw a bus on I-70. I'm assuming they're using buses to simulate something larger in the "lane", and not because they're actually going to run a bus service up there?
It's only a study, but a good start. 1 bus could take 40 cars off I70.
