absolutely stunning.
absolutely stunning.
Amazing TR, thanks.
Wow. Incredible. I got stuck in McCarthy for a few weeks and loved it. Spent a few days in the mine.
Of all the cool stuff posted here on tgr over the years, this one wins it. Best ever.
Meh. That was okay. ;)
Seriously, $$$$$$$. Read every word and soaked it all in. Feel good about yourself, this is epic.
jesus mother fucking christ.
greatest trip report I've ever seen of any kind.
I used to ranger denali.
That is the greatest real, romantic depiction of alaskee wilderness I've ever seen.
Every picture is great.
I have a boner for your tr
Two thumbs up.
Fine work gentlemen!
wow. just wow.
what an amazing place - well done sirs!
This is without question the greatest TR I've ever seen in my short time here. Ladies and Gentlemen of maggotdom, the bar has been officially raised. Seriously, I'm dumbfounded by how incredible this trip was. :yourock:
Not sure if anyone else mentioned it....
... but that was a great adventure and very well documented! ;)
Insta-Hall of Fame Classic.
The planning, scale, balls, and the fact that you actually pulled it off the way you envisioned it is absolutely phenomenal. Aside from Gary doing the touch and go on you guys on the raft drop, it didn't look like you had a single miscue.
You guys just created a life defining adventure. Thanks for sharing it.
awesome photos and great adventure:)

Thank you for that, seriously moving and inspirational!
“We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure. There is no end to the adventures that we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.”
-Jawaharlal Nehru-
Your eyes appear to be wide open.
I have chills! That is the coolest thing that I have ever read, ever. My life will not be complete without something like that!
Bravo, Gentlemen!
Adding to the common sentiment that was amazing and appreciated.
I love AK and was wondering if you know if some of the glaciers you traveled were known to be receding rapidly? was that part of your reasoning for the incredible traverse?
what kind of camera? or did you combine everyones fotos?
Legit! Thanks for sharing.
FKNAdoesn't even begin to express how cool this TR is.
I just can't get my brain around the vastness and scale of things in AK. This TR helps, but I still can't comprehend "flashing" across a glacier in 13 hours:eek:
Yeah, lots of dying glaciers out there. According to the locals, this summer the firn line was higher than anyone could remember it ever being. Many glaciers had retreated 1/2 mile or more from where they were drawn on maps. Big bathtub rings on the mountainsides where the glaciers are retreating faster than the alders are colonizing. :frown:
Cool story. Doing anything in the wilderness was so much more core a generation ago. Like Don and [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phyllis_Munday"]Phyl Munday[/ame] who discovered Mt Waddington. Those two did huge, unmapped icefield ski traverses and skied peaks through BC while cooking over wood fires. I mean, how does that even work? Carry cordwood on one's rucksack? Ski to treeline each night?
Tana Lobe was the big question mark for the trip. We didnt know if we'd be able to cross the glacier and there was also the possibility of it not bridging Granite Creek. We talked about the possibility of having to v-thread the ice and rap into the river, which sounds terrifying. Worst case, we would have back-tracked to iceberg lake and called the pilot from the sat phone.
This is so fucking awesome. Must go there!
So, just re-read this again. This is really an amazing TR, both words and photos.
Gnarwhale, if you have the time, I would love the hear the background on this coming together. You touched upon it in some responses, but it would be cool to understand (high-level at least) the immense logistics that go into a trip this remote and long.
Thanks.
so fucking cool. nice work
It was totally worth coming out of lurk-mode and making my first post just to tell you how FUCKING AWESOME this TR is.
EPIC CITY.
Well done, sirs.
AWESOME!
That is all.
