Sad for them. I'd love to ski Magic when they've got some cover. I'm eyeing MRG right now which is looking pretty good.

I'm headed up to Mt. Snow on the Emilios bus on Sunday. They've got a lot of the mountain open, looks like, and I'll try to take advantage of "the woods never close" policy. Anyone?
I am considering heading up this weekend thought likely to Bromley.... leaving from NYC with room for one or two if needed. Let me know.
Dudley I'd go but funds are tight right now. Need to find some gainful employment before I start taking trips again.
Looking to head up to Jay or Smuggs sometime in the next 2-3 weeks. Self employed so I can go pretty much at my leisure... I'm thinking 3-4 days. Best of all, I have a stack of buy-1-get-1-free lift tix to Jay, i.e. ski for 1/2 price. Something like $32 I think.
Got room in the car too... will have even more room if I decide to spring for roof racks this week.
Anyone have a lead on real cheap lodging? I'm happy to crash on a couch/floor/garage/whatever.
i was about to ask how it was before i finished that sentence, and then thought duh, icy.
Anyways specifically, can you get in the woods? Do you think Belleayre / Plat would be a much better time right now? Plattekill sent me a text of a ten inch storm and then a 12 inch storm in the past week, not sure if huntah ever gets as much.....i just wanna ski i guess.
I was gonna do Hunter in the morning actually, but I got hit with some unexpected and very large bills today, so I decided to pass... not worth $50 to ski on bullet ice.
As far as dates for Jay.... pretty much whenever. Any time from about Jan 24th onwards is good for me. I can probably find 3-4 free days pretty much any time in Feb also... definitely want to avoid President's Week though. Thanks for the heads up on Grunt's, BTW. I'll look into it tomorrow.
I'm in Teaneck, NJ... about 8 minutes from the GWB. If anybody wants to suggest some dates to look at for Jay, I'm all ears. Just got some new Punisher 182's (thank you Tramdock!) that I'm itching to try out.
Hunter's got less than 10 in the last couple of weeks.
You can get into the woods at Hunter from the peak by going towards hunter west and continuing out the sevice road/hiking trails. I've never tried this. Could see the cover on opposing mountains and there is snow all the way down, but I dipped into the woods between trails at Hunter yesterday and it was pretty bad.
Belleayre gets a lot more natural snow than Hunter for some reason. You can tour from the top by following the road from the peak that heads west along the ridge. I did this once last year. The snow was firm, but fully covered in March. The nice thing about Belleayre is they have a gladed area higher up and west of the resort called Cathedral Glen which is never open, but they cleared of shrubs years ago and is skiable. The big hangup with trying to tour anywhere off of hiking trails in the Catskills (besides lack of snow) is the dense brush. You can ski all the way down to the lake from the Cathedral Glen area.
There's a pretty cheap ski bus to Belleayre run by Adirondak Trailways that leaves every day from Port Authority.
ml242 - driving up or taking the bus from NYC? also, you planning on hitting both plat and bell?
driving from brooklyn, it looks like a full car this trip but i'd still like to ski with mags...
definitely one or the other for plat / bell. my friends suck and are renting gear so i have to look at tix/rental cost tomorrow.
EDIT:
Car is no longer full. $38 plattekill tix on liftopia. lemme know if interested, leaving from brooklyn at 6:15am.
Ah shit.... of course I only see this at 2AM... I'm sending you a PM.
anyone know why the fuck plattekill was closed yesterday? bullshit. heard alot about this mtn, used the inauguration excuse to cut work and then its closed. beat.
luckily, belleayre was open and empty and DEEEEEP!!! knee high in some places. the trees were great! cathedral glen (mentioned above) was excellent and we were the only ones in there. screw hunter. bellayre beats it with terrain alone. there were drops and excellent glades everywhere. if any of you can get to it before the weekend you are in for a treat. snow was freshly soft...def the east coast version of utah fluff. havent seen snow like that here in a long time...nor so much of it.
bonus points: my buddy and i both used our expired college ids for $40 lift. his is over 3 years old!
disclosure: never been to platt or bell before. but very happy with the results.
okemo this weekend.
plat isn't open anymore m-f except when they get serious snow. they send out text messages to people in their club when that happens (lately, A LOT).
belleayre is nice, and a good 1/2 hour closer. looks like you found some goods.
i have no idea why you would go to okemo. belleayre and hunter have better terrain.
Based on Nihiles' recommendation, I'm heading up to Belleayre tomorrow morning for 2 days. Gonna hike Cathedral Glen at least once or twice.
They've got some pretty wild lodging deals on their website... $99 for a night of lodging and 2 bellayare lift tix, i.e. for 2 people it's $49 each... add in the expired college ID (still got it :)) and you're looking at $89 for 2 days of skiing and a night of lodging with a free breakfast.
Might also do Plat on Friday instead of Bellayre if they're open. If any mags to meet up for some turns on Thurs or Fri, shoot me a PM tonight with your info. I'll be riding blue/yellow Scott Punisher 182's if we don't get in touch.
i figured out the whole plattekill thing after i posted that. sorry, i was still pissed they were closed and no one in town knew why. even the guy who sold us our tickets at bellayre said his mom works at platt and she didnt say anything about them being closed. anyway...now i gotta go find out how to get on that text message hookup for snow daize.
as for why okemo...cause ive never been there (aside from opening weekend back in nov which was actually pretty enjoyable) and we got $40 tickets. i have not been back to kmart since they broke up the all-4-one pass. i ski 30 days a season and cant afford $80 lifts. plus its more of a personal boycott in memory of the all-4-one awesomeness.
opening weekend at okemo. http://flickr.com/photos/jaygreen/31...7611259711493/
mine is the ski track, my board buddy is the squiggle threading the middle. were from jersey.
i also would have responded sooner but i am a new poster here and hav eno idea how to track my posts to check for comments. sorry guys.
not going to find a lot of all4one fans here, fuck ASC and les otten for what they did to SB and what they wanted to do.
I'll ski Okemo because it is one of the 3 VT resorts the Emilios ski bus goes to. It's not an exciting mountain, but if there is enough snow you can ski about 1200 vertical feel of trees on Jackson Gore, which is a passable way to spend a day. For some solitude there is a nice gladed area on Jackson Gore that isn't marked..you can bushwack in from the top, and then you hit an area that's been cleared. I wonder if they cut it, but didn't get the permits in order?..
On Feb 3rd (a Tuesday) I'm hopping the Emilios bus to Stratton. It's the "Staff on Snow Demo" which I hit last year by accident. It is a huge event where all the ski manufacturers bring out their equipment to demo for people who work in ski shops around the East Coast. Technically to demo the equipment you're supposed to be a ski shop representatitive (whose shop has payed $$ to register you), but the equipment reps didn't seem to care.
Last year Garmont, Scarpa, Black Diamond, Dynafit, and a few other companies were there with AT and Tele Equipment to demo - lots of the next years gear. Got to try a lot of AT skis and boots side by side.
Because it was a weekday, Stratton was deserted except for the couple of hundred ski shop reps there.
Cost is $90 including lift ticket and transportation.
Anyone?
Just came back from a day at Belleayre and a day at Plattekill. Honest to god, about as EPIC a trip as you could possibly manage in the Catskills.
It's been a full week since they got their 14" dump.... and fresh tracks were easily had all over both mountains. At Belleayre coverage was a little thin coming down Cathedral (I didn't take the full hike out to the Glen), but it was my first time at Belleayre in years (since I learned the magic of tree skiing) and it was great. Temps were perfect and the mountain was pretty quiet.
It was also my first time skiing at Platt, although I spent 2 years downhilling there (before my rig got stolen by some chicken shit motherfucker). First of all... the mountain was DESOLATE. When I rolled up at 10AM, there were maybe all of 30 cars in the lot. Tickets were also on sale... $30. They had a Nastar race going on later in the day, so the main run was groomed to perfection and FAAAAST. I actually took the first 3-4 runs of the day down it just cause it was so fun (and needed to get through 3 PBR's on the lift before I took the backpack into the woods, lol).
It was my first day out on my new Punisher 182 sticks and those are really a one-ski quiver. Great everywhere, although a tiny bit soft and prone to chatter. Will put out a full review in the review thread.
I found one of the nice 8' drops in the woods in between Shredded Mozzarella and The Face... great landing to a sketchy runout, but tons of fun. The main tree runs (i.e. the big switchbacks) were skied pretty thin, but everything else actually deep in the trees was mostly virgin powder. It had gotten a little warm by mid-afternoon and it made the snow denser/heavier than i would have liked, but on the flip side, it also helped with flotation and probably kept the base on my skis in better shape.
It was my first time really "skiing" either Bell or Platt but I had waaay more fun than I thought I ever would. I'm down for another day trip up anytime any maggots want to go. Still looking to do a Jay trip sometime the first week or last week of Feb.
nice dude, glad you had a good time.
If we get another dump the woods will be set up very, very well. I only put one gash in my skis, which I was very surprised about. The best stuff on the mountain all skis off the double, and for a tiny mountain I'm pretty sure I haven't even seen half of it. If I can't get to VT in the next couple of weeks, I'm happy to do another day trip. Are you all good to ski midweek if it snows?
I'll do midwek next week too. Let me know if you're headed up there.
hey all- new to the forum. looking for people to ride with in the catskills midweek. windham or belleayre preferably. i'm in north jersey, have car with rack for boards and skis, or meet at mountain. shoot me a pm.
Plattekill is running a sale on lift tix this week. They are going to be open specially Weds/Thurs/Fri and tix are only $15. To top it off, they're expecting up to 12" of fresh over Weds and through Weds night. It's gonna be epic.
I sent out a couple PM's to see if we can arrange a ride share for Thursday. I'm also willing to split a motel room for the night and make it a two-fer. I know of a couple motels in the area that get down to about $80/night... split that 3 ways and it starts to get pretty damn cheap... we're talking $60 for 2 days of skiing and lodging.
Anyone else interested? PM me.
perfect time to get fucked by work.
:fuckyou::fuckyou:
I'm in Memphis right now where it's snowed twice in a week. It never snows here. What a time to leave NY. Let's hit something next week.
Next week for sure!
I'm heading up to Stowe in the morning. 20" over the last 24 hours. Gonna be deeeep.
I'm planning on driving out of NYC sometime thursday night to head to N. Conway for the Mt. Washington ice fest to try my luck at ice climbing. Anyone else need a ride up to NH?
Look at all this snow. I was going to be in Stratton today buy Emilios cancelled the trip. Anyone know how the Cats are fairing?
G
man does stratton suck. i was reading that they average 90 inches a year in snow. Plattekill is at 150 already!
p.s. fuck emilios those bastards.
Yeah - it does, but I'll get a day in whenever I can - esp if it's an uncrowded week day. I've never skied Stratton in good conditions, so I hold out hope they have some sweet woods tuked away or something. There is also a hiking/ski trail off the back side that goes down to long pond (Catamout Trail) that one day I'd like to do as part of a 2 or 3 day trip.
