The movie is so different, the art, ........ hell, it is really a great film, like fine wine.
Edit: Ice has the right idea for sure. If I go watch this again today (watched it last night AGAIN), my wife will most likely kill me. 2 days of Sinners and Josh Ritter, grovin out. :D
edit2: HUGE thanks to bagtagley, he sent me his extra copy out of the kindness of his heart. I hope to return the favor somehow someday!
Yeah, amazing song, I'm planning on buying Golden Age of Radio and Hello Starling later today. My second favorite song in the film is "Lay Me Down" by The Frames, it just seems so perfectly matched to the style of shooting and the segment. The whole thing is a work of art. Here's to hoping that Bill turns out something else like it sometime in the future, only this time it needs to be about 3 times as long. :DQuote:

Ordered :D
bumped to top of christmas wishlist.
There is no doubt that this is the definitive thread on Sinners both on the TGR Boards and anywhere on the internet.
I've helped Bill sell so many copies of his film I think he should give me some kind of finders fee for bringing so much business to him. :p ;)
Buzzy Buzz,
You're welcome indirectly for Ritter Cd; I still gotta get Woods Golden Age of Radio - JR's first Cd. Me and Jiggs will knock your newly bought skis right off; great songwriter who's songs I love to listen too while driving back down LCC after an epic Alta pow session.
Now, if we can just get JR to come anywhere near Utah I'm sure it will be a killer Utard Maggot gathering :)
Speaking of which, pliiiiiiz...
thanks :)
Glad you're enjoying it. Bill told me to send it to someone who'd really appreciate the film. Guess I made a good choice.Quote:

My wife put it like this - Sinners is a film that explains WHY we are skiers, not just why/where/how we ski.
Very nice and re-watchable.
I don't know how I ignored this thread for so long, but consider another one purchased. :D If its seriously that much better than Immersion I think my new 51" big screen will be wore out in a week.
castor, i'd defect from the yankee ranks and help ya out with the jibberish, but a friend lost/made off with my copy. karma, perhaps --->he broke his skis shortly afterwards. i really want another copy. might have to reorder. truly i say, 'tis art.Quote:

I completely agree, the film captures exactly the soul we've all been missing in the 80's 90's movies, though there's shreds of it in Gaffney's "Walls...", i think. just not as quietly beeyootiful. which is a shame, b/c i would bet my skis Scott's got the footage for immersion 2, it's just that it's too expensive to develop it into another film. He's super creative and so much more keyed into the soul of the sport, the passion behind it. I wonder if he's seen Sinners, actually? hmm.. . .
and i'll echo what many have already said in varying forms. "Sinners" is addictive and in a subtle way. i was bummed when i found it to be shorter than most ski film, but the more I watched it, the more I loved it. and i already knew the first time it was brilliant. but it's peace and beauty grow into you, throughout you. and it feeds the same passion i feel when watching more superficial, (but nearly as equally important), ski movies. I can't tell you how many times i popped Sinners into the DVD player at 1am last year, and grinned ear to ear, watching every detail of his editing, lighting, how he chooses to use the music, all to make that time on the screen transcendent for us.
It's not "XXXtreme!!!" b/c it doesn't need to be. I really need my ski porn, but the distinction is I couldn't live/ski as fulfilled as i do if I'd never had the chance to see Bill's work.
I'm sold, order sent!
atta boy. good'on ya.
Good chance you'll be waiting for a lonnnnnnng time. Bill is my nextdoor neighbour and as far as he's concerned, he is done with that part of his filming career and has moved onto other arena's. I've questioned him often about it and while he'll never say never, he says it's highly unlikely. :(Quote:

Oh well, true artistes are a fickle lot.
POW! POW! POW!
The skiers in that movie were under the snow for way too long. Choking for sure? You can't ski and hold your breath for that long, no way!
Yo didn't you see they had snorkels!Quote:

I LOVE this movie. It's kind of cool that there won't be another one, because anything else would probably be a dissapointment. How do you top Sinners?
BTW, just finished watching Immersion. I like that flick just as much as Sinners, but for different reasons.
I was checking out my new high definition channels tonight and Warren Miller's "Vertical Reality" was on. In VR there is a segment where they show Bill as a WM cameraman and give him a little bit of a feature. In addition to showing him as a cameraman, they show him bungey jumping in NZ I think.
Yeah, Bill spent something like 16 or 20 years shooting with WM Films. I swear that I can pick the segments he shot out of most Warren Miller films just because of the shooting style. Either way, the man does magic with a video camera. It would be interesting to see him and Gaffney team up for an independent project, kinda like a synthesis of tru Gaffney works (Walls, Immersion) and Sinners. I bet it would be amazing. It'll never happen, but I can dream, right? :)Quote:

This festival’s 2004 award for Best Film on Mountain Sports goes to a film that celebrates the sheer bliss of powder skiing. Sinners (Canada), directed and produced by Bill Heath, extols the exquisite beauty of deep snow. “This is a film of flowing grace that captures the essence of deep powder,” says Libecki. The mountain sports award is sponsored by Big Rock Brewery.
