One of my friends was in the Berzerkly Nuclear Engineering program. He said being in that major at that school could sometimes make his life very socially difficult.

Great thread. I say we start "The Coalition For the End of Coalitions". We can get non profit status and go door to door seeking support and donations. Then we'll march from Berkeley to Colorado Springs to Texas then on to Vermont.

I see no difference between Peta, Focus on the Family, Al-Quida, the Taliban or any of the extreme groups out there. Extremism is bad.

When a law professor writes a memo that allows the president to shit on the constitution and tell the American people to fuck off, then yeah, I can understand the protest.

If you can find any legal scholar, conservative or liberal, who has gone on the record with full support of the Yoo memo, I would be surprised. And Glenn Reynolds doesn't count as a great legal mind.

Could you be more specific? Excluding Abu Grabass and Gitmo, and isolated incidents of individuals. what "war crimes" do you refer to? Afghanistan? Examples please.

Like Stu Gotz said, the overwhelming weight of legal scholarship crossing ideological partisan lines agree that Yoo's memo (and many other memos penned by DOJ during that timeframe) is, at best, categorized as creative legal artistry and more like a legal travesty.

Glademaster -- I would also like to hear your specifics if you have any above and beyond those presented by your detractor.

This is not Peoples Park. You need to give examples when you make such an accusation. Surely they taught you that at Berekley?

You said we continue to commit "war crimes". Which ones do you refer to? And tell me about AFghanistan.

Maybe statements like that can get you laid at Berkeley, but some of us have relatives in service over there, and some of us have served over there, so tell me about these "war crimes".

I would also like to add that I fully support the military and what they do, because I sure as hell wouldn't do it myself, so I can't criticize them for that. However, that will not stop me from criticizing the government and military leaders who put American troops in harms way with nothing but spurious evidence to support their actions. In addition, I have no problem with our involvement in Afghanistan. Does that mean that we have not violated the Geneva Convention there, no, it doesn't, but that is at least a justifiable conflict.

My favorite activist experience:

I studied for a year at a superfancy English university (Cambridge). Full of a bunch of rich kids who liked to drink to excess while enjoying being rich. So one morning I got up and there was a march protesting in favor of higher wages for the bedders (basically the maids+housekeepers in the dorms). Lots of chanting and singing about university greed and the need to support the workers.

The rent was going to go from like 800 pounds per year to 1000 pounds per year, which was still less than 1/3 of the market rate for the size of the rooms in this area.

I honestly don't think anybody at the protests saw the irony.

My point is that people shouldn’t ask for a resignation based on politics; That is no more than silencing dissent, and does not contribute to the discourse. Like his memo or not, he shouldn’t resign in the face of petty politics.

As far as i am concerned, he served his country by writing a Memo, which many people don't like; such an action should not cost a man his job.

I dont support the patriot act. I just think people should be able to contribute to the government without fear of losing their job. If you dont like the law, fire your reprasentitive; a law professor has no legal obligation to serve you.

Do not bother, you have already proved the point of this thread. People making serious statements with very little or nothing to back it up with when they make them.

In the future if you want call Donald Rumsfield a "war criminal" go ahead, that is your right. But making a broad based accusation like that, without reference to anything, and then needing several hours in the library to justify them, is simply pathetic.

Feel free to cut and paste this for your Berkeley application. It should help.
