IF it is the 'end stage' of the two party political system, I will not be sorry to see it go, but I believe there are other factors (too) ;
the politics of fear and the politics of hatred have been strong for a long time -
I do not see it in the young people in my life, though I know there are sectors of society where racism is strong in any demographic (group) -
I wish the younger generations well !

I am not sure how different the incident in Idaho is from the incident in texas in '22, from the incident in minneapolis in '20, from the incident in south carolina a decade ago, from massachuetts twenty years, ago from the incident in colorado almost thirty years ago - or las vegas, or new orleans...
as long as it did not occur "in My 'back yard' " it is someone else's problem...

Question for you wildland firefighters:I know a few surveyors who carry a pistol when out in the boonies, do any wildland firefighters carry to protect against meth heads, bundys, or bears?
(( a pistol is not 'protect'-ion against a sniper with a rifle ))
When I worked there, a number of firefighters in AK carried a pistol for bears. I never noticed any regular firefighters in the lower 48 carrying. Doesn’t mean no one does, but it’s not like sniper arsonists are a regular occurrence.Quote:

Up here where there are much less firearms I have seen or heard of the odd forestry worker carrying a defender for the bears, I know hand guns are restricted and a shotgun might be easier to get
Nope. But, like i alluded to earlier, my surveyor buddies have had enough run-ins with methheads and bundys over the years to carry personal protection when working in areas with those kind of people about. Obviously not going to protect against a concealed sniper ambush, but can provide protection against methheads thinking youre robbing their cookout, or bundys thinking you are gubberment taking/spying on their land.Quote:

Never ran into a bear alone in the field that couldn’t be dealt with an indirect gaze and shuffle in a 45 away from bruin. Problem bears at camp or trailheads that were habituated needed a dedicated guard with the bear most often ending up dead (been that guy a couple times). The odd exception exists, but the vast majority of problem bear encounters in the woods can be dealt with a canister of spray, and a level head. Bears typically are not the source of the problem.
I asked my old LL the senior Bio if he ever came upon pot plantations and he said " Oh yes we refer to that as an exotic species and we just leave it alone"

A buddy used to work at the youth camp ( now lawyer ) where they promoted better behavior by -20 dips in the lake, chopping wood, forced marches, building hike trails at one point every outdoor person I met in the narth was coming thru that facility as a counselor.

Not many 3-man+ crews anymore. The crew chief usually runs the rod and his lesser-experienced i-man is there for the scut, and to be another set of eyes and ears. Surveyors usually hire careerists out of school anymore too, unless their practice involves a lot of scut or warm-body work in the field.
Idaho firefighter Dave Tysdal is now upgraded to stable condition. If there's a tiny silver lining it's that rapid gunshot hemorrhage control saves lives. Dave was surrounded by people who knew what to do. Oftentimes quick intervention is impossible with an active shooter
