Heading up for 2/3 days next weekend. Anyone going to be up?
I have been up for five days, and while the groomers are in reasonably good shape considering the lack of prep, the ungroomed is not terribly fun. It is skiable, and a few good turns can be found, most of the time it is just tolerable.
Went for a little stroll out San Joaquin ridge today and barely found a reasonable turn. Which, is not too surprising on the sun baked ridge, but even the north facing trees we not much fun. Still, it was a beautiful day for a skin.
Looking like convict might freeze over and be skateable if the weather keeps up.
After a extended road trip up to the PNW and Southern BC I was back out at Mammoth for the first time in a month. My initial impression as I pulled into town, there was alot more snow a month ago. A ripping North wind brought the temps down to well below zero over the Top. Fingers were going numb trying to take any pics so I only got a couple.

Wind chill at 11:30 Monday morning. Liftee at the bottom of ch 23 was warning people not to have any exposed skin. It was one of the colder days I've skied in Mammoth in a long time.

The view riding up 23.

The winds have hammered the upper Mtn and the entrances off the Top are showing lots of rocks. I stuck to Cornice laps the were ok after the top 100 ft.

With no snow in sight the guns were going all over the Mtn. Ch 3.

Guns & Hoses.
If you stuck to the groomed and have tuned skis the snows not bad. Watched someone fall at the top of Scotties and slide thru the rocks and go all the way to the bottom. Should warm up over the next few days.
Hey I am headed to mammoth Jan 30 to Feb 4 from the New England. I am with a big group but no real adventurous skiers. I am bringing my skins because my GF likes to uphill in the resort.
Trying to decide whether or not to bring beacon shovel probe.
From reading here it doesn't sound like great conditions.
If anyone here can weigh in or might let me glom on to a group for the day let me know. I do realize that most people don't want to add a random to the party but I have skied (and toured) with several mags .... I also realize the risk of tagging along with a random group...
I have limited space in my ski bag and don't want to lug the avy stuff if I'm not going to use it.
Happy trails!
Winds dropped, temps moderated making for a good day of skiing in Tuesday. Longest lift line was barely a minute at the gondola. Groomed continues to ski well along with sections of the upper mtn i.e. Climax, Dry Creek, Dave’s & Cornice.

The sunny lookers right of Climax down thru the shaded choke and back into the sun was a good line all day.

West Bowl.

Late afternoon down at Juniper Springs the snow almost started to transition to spring.

Late afternoon laps off the Top in Dry Creek were really good with smooth chalky snow.

Ralphies with some fun, carvy snow at the end of the day.

Off shore winds, chalky winter snow, carvy groomers, light crowds and a bear walking down the street. That pretty much sums up Wednesday.
Winds were back up out of the North making the snow a little crisper up Top in places. Crowds were basically non existent and it was easy to rack up the run count.

Good skiing in the Climax/Dry Creek zones. It’s not seemless, hero wind buff, more like fun winter chalk and no rocks.

Did three back to back gondola runs mid morning and rode alone each time.

If skiing the Wipeout’s off of ch 23 is your favorite thing, you might be disappointed. That side has had some serious wind hammer.

Afternoon laps down the sun line in Cornice.

Cornice bowl late in the day. Even with the long dry spell and the wind hammer on Top the skiing is still good overall, especially for 80% of the public that only skis the groomed. With a lazy 10:30 start the last two days I’ve been over 30 runs each day.

Watched this big guy slowly walking down the street and stop at the neighbors.

After a few minutes he casually moved on to do whatever bears do this time of year.

Thanks for the shots ESS!!
We're heading up for three days, skiing Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. We were going to be up for the weekend, but we just got back from an 8 day trip back east and we both need to play catchup, so we decided to work through Saturday.
I'm hoping the few inches that are forecast blow around well, and give the mountain a refresher. This has been a tough period. Let's hope the rains finally come for California, for obvious more important reasons than the sparse coverage at Summit/Bear/Baldy.
A few pics from Thursday afternoon after the Top was in the shade and the legs were tired.

Solitude off of ch 5 with good snow and zero traffic. Super fun to go arc some turns down.

Looking back up.

Saddle Bowl & World Cup towards the end of the day.
Literally everyone I talked with
this week all said the same, “It’s so much better than I thought it would be.”

Yup, that is Mammoth. If it is sunny, I have never had a crap day there.
Long shot but I am looking for a ride from mammoth to Santa Barbara (or close) this Thursday after skiing.
I am headed to mammoth this weekend and supposed to come back Tuesday with my gf because she has to work but I don't.
There is some snow forecast for Wednesday Thursday so I would stay if I could find a way back.
Rainy wind hold day...
It looked pretty ...... moist.
Hey Socal friends:
Can I get some recommendations on a place to rent a good pair of skis around the area of Ontario CA? Or a good rental shop in Big Bear?
Thanks.
Almost a week at mammoth. We had rain. We had wind hold. We had sun. We had fun.
We had fun at Distant Brewing. Shelter distillery less fun. Get over yourselves!
We had fun on climax.
I wish you all at least some of the forecast snow!
Here is a rental spot in Big Bear:

In Orange County, I would say Phil's Ski and Snowboard in Costa Mesa, but Ontario is a bit far away for that.
It has been several years since I rented, but I was always impressed with Goldsmith’s in Big Bear

It’s starting to snow hard in town. Getting ready to head up to the mtn for what is hopefully a good afternoon of storm skiing.

Yes, Mammoth. But, not nearly what was predicted. Mondays forecast of 32-40” by Friday was overly optimistic. Both storms underperformed for a combined total of 18” of new snow. The Top may have gotten more snow but with last nights wind gusts of 100+mph I’m guessing it’s pretty well wind packed. Here’s a few pics from Wed & Thurs.

It was busy for mid week. This was Wednesday and parking was way uphill from the ch 4 lot. Trade show was here with lots of dealer/rep types on the hill.

All of the Avi chutes had good snow on Wednesday.

Wednesday lines on ch 5? Other than Xmas it was the busiest mid week period I’ve seen this season.

By 1:00 yesterday (Thursday) it was starting to add up.

Winds made visibility challenging at times so I spent most of the day in the trees.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...814f281a58.jpg
No ch 22 was a bummer. It didn’t seem that windy, but you could still hike it from the top of the Gold Rush Exp.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...279e8a33b1.jpg
Pushed out under ch 25, which wasn’t running late in the day. Snow felt like it was getting thicker as the day went on.

Last run of the day.
Winds are still blowing over the Top this morning, gusting to 70 mph currently, so anticipate limited opening until later in the day.
