A great read is a book by the name of Low Life by Luc Sante. I had the pleasure of knowing him from working with him at a magazine publisher, where he was a copy check dude. It's all about NYC in the late 19th century. A hellish place. I always recommended that book when New Yorkers would complain about the city now. Anyway, there is a picture in there of horse shit piled about 5 feet high next to a sidewalk, like a brown snowbank. There was tons of that stuff collected and dumped in the river.
