When the Monte Rosa area has a good snow year, that's one of the places to which I'll go back.

There's so many easy access big lines off the Indren lift, not to mention heli access to Zermatt and Cervinia let alone the lift served circuit of Alagna, Gressoney and Champoluc. Get Sergio Gabbio as a guide.

And if it's later in the season and stable, the Tyndall and Marenelli couloirs are all time monster lines.

I haven't done the AK or BC heli thing, but I've spent enough time with dentists and lawyers in BC cat operations to be leery of poor group dynamics. Plus the food in Italy is amazing.

I thought about this for some time, and the answer is.

Since the OP is from Norway or skies Norway, I think one of the Heli operations in AK or BC might be the choice. Maybe finish by taking the "long" way to get home and do Japan to get some flat mellow deep powder lines followed by onsen and sushi, then hit Italy/France on the way home.

In other words, thrash your body for as long as $17K holds out then do a round-the-world never summer quick tour.

1 week heli in BC,
then 2 back to back weeks at Fairy Meadows.

I would go anywhere as long as it's with my old man. We've been together for every trip over the past 30+ years. Fuck we had fun skiing Iowa.

I saw a presentation Jess McMillan did of her trip to Iceland and have had it high on my list ever since.
Never hit Japow either but I know I'll get there cause it's relatively affordable, so for the purposes of this thread's dream scenario, it's gotta be Iceland.

AK but a gamble. Who knows how many days are actually OK for skiing and helis.

Last two seasons I have been there two weeks in a row. Both times I had six days of skiing. Last year, snow line was high, but conditions in the high alpine was great, dry and stable, before a refresh over patchy surface hoar. This year I was unlucky and hit it exactly at a warm spell and snow was a bit funky. Some of the skiing was still really nice though. Although it was corn, not pow.

I think that if you are staying two weeks, six days of skiing is pretty normal, at least that's what I have heard. And yeah, brutal down days and basically a gamble with a huge payout.

I was only able to ski the sidecountry at Lee Canyon during one of the three times I skied there. It is pretty amazing when it is open. Check out some of CDLV's posts. He really knows where to find the goods.

Heh, I spent almost $20K for a 3 week ski trip to Lyngen and Svalbard :)
I had the money and I wanted a trip of a lifetime, so that is where I went! (It actually cost me less than $15K)

But since the OP is from Norway already, flying to Troms or Bodo is a quick hop to get to world class steeps and one can rent a camper van to stretch out a 3 week trip for not so much money.

I'd therefore suggest something which is much different than the Arctic alpine terrain of Norway ... Skiing pillow fields and old growth forests in British Columbia would be quite different from the treeless terrain in Norway. Of course, some would say that Lake Tahoe actually has the most legendary tree skiing in the world, due to how well the trees space out as the forests age and burn ... But the vertical isn't so great and the steeps aren't as sustained as other mountain ranges. Still, for $20K you could probably fly to US or Canada and buy yourself a sled, as you will get way more laps sled shuttling with a buddy than via awfully slow snowcats. I haven't been watching the Kroner but I bet it goes a long ways in Canada right now???

OK OP, lots of Norway, lots of AK, have you skied the Alps?

Of course you have.

So you should take 3 weeks and do a maggot tour. Start South and head North, ski w/ Hutash and Punani in Mammoth, then Splat et al in Tahoe, acinpdx et al around Hood and maybe Flatchelor, BBI17, then finish with kootenayskier and mtnlion in BC and Ab.

Kinda what Plake's been doing.

Have not done the heli thing either (other than drop offs) but my cat skiing experiences echo Buster Highmen very astute words. Did several cat sessions with some of the wealthy scions of Smithers and frankly, they were f@cking annoying. Nice dudes all of them. But the egos and useless conversational drivel was too much. Speaking of egos, my cat experiences have also made me leary of ego maniac guides.

3 weeks is a lot of time to hang out waiting for blue bird days or skiing in cat with egotistical professionals.

In all seriousness I would go with the Europe option. I'm not sure where but somewhere where I could travel from village to village, stay up late getting drunk with locals, eating unique food and having fun social as well as fun skiing experiences. If it's a vacation I don't think I need to be out slaying the gnar every day either, sure I enjoy a good adrenalin buzz every now and then but getting after mid angle safe powder skiing while enjoying some of the finer things in life sounds real nice. I guess at this point in my life skiing is really only a part of what I'm after.

Or Vegas. 3 weeks of that would be brutal though. Hows about 20k for 5 days? Yeah, that could work.

They are twice as fast for sure but a fit dude on set tracks can easily do a third of cat skiing vert. And that third will likely be of higher quality since you are not sharing with 10 other dudes. And you can hear the songbirds sing.

I've actually had fun cat skiing, don't want to diss it too much but the theme at hand concerns the oppotunity to go and ski anywhere. My dream gig might have a day or two cat or heli skiing but no way woulg i stack a whole trip with it.

May I suggest that you head east and you will find better snow conditiona due to the cold temperatures, more consistant snowfall as well as superior snowmaking(and LOTS of water for the snowmaking systems). The northeast is the home of the gnarliest snowriding on the North American continent! I would suggest you consider Killington, Vermont where the snowriding terrain is truly fabulous, the partying is unmatched anywhere(can you say "hot New Jersey Italian babes?") If you can shred here, you can shred ANYWHERE. When you score your first Killington powder day in "Anarchy", "The Throne", "Chop Chop" or "Patsy", you will be grinning from ear to ear, I promise you!
