I don't think that's true in Wilderness Areas.
One of the first things the Obama administration did when he took office four years ago was to make it legal to CARRY firearms in National Wilderness Areas but it was never legal to actually USE them and, even now, the USE is restricted to emergency protection.
But I'm open to correction.
I think the ruling came after the Heller vs DC case which determined that the right to bear arms was a personal and not a state right. The park system decided it was easier to not fight the NRA and just recognize a basic right to protect oneself. Target shooting, hunting and any discharge of a firearm not related to self defense are still prohibited in National Parks.
Listen - even if you could blast away with an M2 in national parks it still wouldn't do shit for avalanche mitigation, weaklings. More guns isn't going to solve this problem. Slides don't kill people - asphyxiation and massive trauma do.
