The drive sounds awefully similar in length and even topography to my old drive of western CO out to LA (when I was living in CO and had to drive out to LA for family BS stuff). I always had to do it alone and in one shot. No problems, except once when I got hit with a snowstorm in Utah. It made it an hour or so longer. I had a partner a couple of times, and it went by like nothing. I'm not afeared.

I did it a couple times to SF after living in JH. It was between 13 and 16 hours and tended to average about 15.

Sprite, condo's are fairly reasonable right at the base. Basically the 3 cheapish choices are a condo at the base and pile it high with maggots, Hotel X, or a condo in the Aspens which is about 6 miles from the village. Cheap, decent, but not nearly as convenient.

I'm definitely thinking about a 4 or 5 day weekend visit out there.

It is very similar to the CO - LA drive, except I would say the Nevado I80 portion of this is worse. Weather is typically worse in the winter and it can be very windy. Very desolet too.

This is what brownmonkey and bad_roo did during the Tahoe Summit. It was killer! Roo's crowd was awefully cool and a fun to be around. They were gonna have a good time no matter what. It also didn't hurt that the place the rented ruled. I've never played so much Galaga as I did there.

That is true. There's definitely more mountain passes to cross on I-80, a bit more opportunity for nasty weather, although the Northern Nevada weather isn't as wet as Utah. It's a pretty nifty drive. Just don't do Hwy 50. Bad things happen on that road.

FUCK! All this travelling talk is giving me hard-core wanderlust. Where can I go this weekend??? Oh, yeah, my car is busted.:mad:

Is their another place to fly into that's cheaper?

Idaho Fallls is still pricey and Jackson is and arm and a leg.

Any Utards ever take the shuttle service from SLC? The flight to SLC is cheap and the shuttle not too bad.

Seems pretty cheap $102 versus renting a car.

Driving probably not an option given the 18 hrs in the car and giving up two days for travel.


edit: Just found an article saying that Southwest is going to cut prices up to 65% after August 16th. With any luck flights might be cheaper a little later in the summer.

Depending on # 's of people and how long you are going for a rental car isn't too bad. The times just never worked for me on the shuttle.

I have driven the SLC-JH route a bunch because the flight was always too pricey for me. I have mentioned it before, but typically route is fly to SLC, Ski alta (with patroller buddy), drive JH that afternoon (about 4-5 hrs), then repeat the whole process again when finished. This is the cheapest, most flexible way to do it.

Flights to JH do get cancelled as well. I did the drive last year and my dad flew, but he got screwed with weather cancelling his flight costing him a day of skiing. the drive was a bit hairy through the canyon that night, but still better than missing the next day of 7inches fresh and being the first 2 down the N Hoback!!! Damn I love that mtn! If the snow is good = best in N.AM.

Thanks Comish, that's definitely something to consider!! Hopefully us Tahoe maggots can book a few rows on a plane flight and plan exact dates together. It would be cheaper to fly to SLC, and get a bunch of people to one car..., etc. We'll figure it out.

Uber...if the conditions are right, I'm thinking about making one MASSIVE road trip around the time of the summit. Something like this:

SF-TAHOE-SLC-JH-BC (Golden, Kicking Horse, Whistler) and back to SF via WA (Baker?), & OR (Hood?). Conditions will dictate where most time is spent. If the conditions aren't right, I won't do it. It'll be fly by night. I'm thinkin' about taking 2 weeks. You and any other mag is welcome to roll along for any part of the journey.

By the way, did you ever get to use the Northstar pass?

I'm certainly willing to do the drive if it isn't solo (and If I'm going to JH).

It's looking like I'm going to have play the choose 2 out of 3 game for next winter (Choices are: JH, Whistler, and Silverton). JH is the only one of the three I've been to before.

Sprite, the Hostel X is the absolute perfect skier's location from what I understand. Basic, cheap, and 100 yards from the freaking tram! All for a measely 55 bucks a night!

I'm worried it will book up too fast. Tell me, friends, are these fears justified? I don't want to dick anyone over by getting the last room or something...:( Is it likely?

Pumped for this! Finally a summit that I'll be able to make, a 4 hour drive down from Bozeman. Gonna have to start working on my contacts down there for a couch to surf. If worst comes to worst (and it aint that bad), got an Uncle in Driggs :D.

All this talk of JH gives me a big woody.

I only have a hazy recall of my only trip ever to JH. It was with about 500 other party animals from my university on a package tour.

After surviving three hours of extremely nervous tension while the bus in front of us got the full bag search at the border (had to slap down the hand of my riduculously naive friend as he was about to ask the customs agent a question regarding the consequences associated with carrying illegal substances!! :eek: ), we arrived during a real dry spell with crap snow for days 1 and 2.

NewYears day we got whacked with a huge storm that kept dumping until we left. Main things I remember from that trip are: the hangovers, the beauty of the area and mountain, the skiing that was absolutely unreal after the beeyatch got powed up, and finishing pub crawl night at some country joint in town with real saddles at the bar that kicked ass. Yeehaw!! Oh yeah, the neon glowstick bowties me and my buddy wore to the New Year's party that drew babes to us like a bug zapper draws bugs. (this was allowed then, it was still the 80's)

I'm so feeling this place calling me back and looking forward to hooking up with the maggot crew for the first time. I'm going to make this happen!!:D Likely driving from Vancouver for an eight or nine day excursion. Will aim for any storms that are in my way and try to hit another cool place on the way (Red anyone?)

This past winter I did this drive with a friend and it sucked, it really really sucked. You cross 8 mountain passes and if it is windy and snowy the roads can blow.

No. I came into town for job interviews and ended up having one just about every day I was there. I thought I was going to have enough time to head up there, but I ended up just getting interview after interview. I believe the pass was only good on the weekdays, so I gave it to some guy at a shop who said he could use it. Thanks again, though!

Don't know if I could do the road trip thing. That's an aweful lot of time/money, and I'm not sure I'll have either then. I'll have to get back to you when the time gets closer to said dates.

Yeah, I like that LCC is directly between Tahoe and JH, it really makes the road trip attractive if the proper systems roll in. :D
