Cigarrettes are probably the worst drug out there. Honestly they sell it at any stores and the things kill ya. I think I rahter be popping herion or smoking crack or doing some crystal meth than smoking cigarrettes.
Maybe not sure about cyrstal meth, that shit fuks you up permentatly.

My advice is to find something to replace that habit.
1. I chewed like 9,000 pieces of gum the first year I quit smoking. Also the weening process didn't work for me at all. A friend of mine developed a video game playing habit, after dinner he would play a game of whatever rather than smoke.
2. If you stop smoking, stop smoking, don't take a drag at all, it'll only lead you back, trust me.
3. Stick with it!! It's the best thing that you'll ever do, it gets easier after about 1 year or so. It's good in so many respects
4. never smoke again, I quit for 7 years and now have an occassional cigarette, depending on your personality this may or may not work for you, some people will go complete relapse. I highly recommend just never smoking again.
One word keeps me from going back to smoking (anything):
CANCER
My father died of cancer and my mother has had it. :(

shera and duph - i feel your pain. i used to be one of the worst nicotine addicts in the world. if it would ease my cravings i would put it in my body. between smokes i'd pack my lips with copenhagen and once in a while i'd throw some snuff up my nose for good measure. if i didn't have nicotine for more then a couple hours i would start freaking out. this included when i was doing the things i loved like skiing and mountain biking. in fact at that time i couldn't even imagine doing a ski run or climbing a hill on my bike with out a wad of cope resting in my bottom lip.
one day right before my 20th birthday i absolutely snapped. i was sitting in a bar, wasted out of my gourd with, you guessed it, a butt in one hand and a dip in my lip and i thought "what the fuck am i doing to myself". from that moment forward i quit, and it wasn't easy. be prepared to be miserable, irritable and downright mean at times, but toil to reap. remember how much it will benefit you in the long run. i found that the nicotine gum and toothpicks were tantamount in assisting me to quit. to this day if i get my hands on a pack of gum or toothpicks i'll chew through them like they're going out of style.
it's now been almost four years since i've quit and i won't even touch anything that has nicotine in it. if someone rolls a hasher with tobacco i won't smoke. i know that the moment that the shit goes near my mouth i will be back to square one and hopelessy addicted. just stick to your guns and fight through it.
Let me once again thank my lucky stars for not finding tobacco. I am one serious addictive son of a bitch, but tobacco never got me. I think I would be dead if it did. FIGHT IT, bro and sis, FITGHT IT!!!!!

Smoked for 17 years, now quit for 17 1/2. Best advise I got in a group therapy session was that I could NEVER TOUCH ANOTHER CIGARETTE FOR LIFE. Yup, addicted for life. Ever know someone who has quit for an extended period and jumped back in? Stop, and don't fuck with it. It's hard, real hard, but the cravings go away. They pop up at the strangest times, like right now typing about this, or driving 2 months from now, or even on a lift 3 years from now. But you will be able to live without the sticks, trust me. And life will be much more pleasant.
I feel ya. Give it your best shot. Tell your friends what you are up to. I have found that they are willing to put up with you when you are a miserable shit if they know that you are kicking the nic.
I struggle with it myself and am just getting ready for another kick at it. Last time I quit, I was still smoking dope and I just substituted one for the other so it was not all that difficult. I was smoking an ounce of high test every 4 or 5 days. YIKES!
Stick with it, it will be worth it.
You guys are so amazing. The outpouring of support is just wonderful. Thank you. When I followed the anonymous thread I was so moved by the responses and felt I could/should talk about this addiction thing here. The maggot collective is the best that humanity has to offer. I feel really lucky to be part of this.
Now for the update - and it's not so good. The other night one of our roommates found out his father was dying and we all freaked out. So there was a relapse. We will try again soon and one of the first things I'll do is reread this thread. I believe it will happen.

Be strong & Hang in there.Knowing you've got a problem is a start.Don't beat yourself up if you fall down,pick yourself up,dust yourself off,& try to do better next time.Eventually you'll break the cycle if you want it bad enough.Even though in this life,you have to go through some doors alone,being brave enough to look to others for help & inspiration is another step in the right direction.
Addiction is a touchy subject for me.Both of my Grandparents on my Mom's side died from smoking,my grandfather when my mom was 11.My Uncle drank himself to death at 33.My former best friend & the guy that inspired me to be a musician,OD'ed 2 years ago.Being around musicians for so many years, I've seen heart attacks,strokes,cancer,OD's,ER visits,jail sentences ,financial ruin,you name it; virtually everyone was related to addiction.
I 've been both a heavy ,heavy drinker & a burner in my life.When I was 20,I put down at least a bottle of Vodka or Tequila with my now dead friend every night.I have also had periods in my life where it seemed that I burned from the time I woke up,to the time I went to sleep.I have gone through extended periods without either,but continue to dabble here & there.
The hardest part about addiction in my opinion isn't the physical duress,it's the mental addiction.After a short period ,the chemicals leave your body & your body adjusts.Your mind on the other hand is totally different.You have to be able to come to grips with the fact that you may never completely lose your desire for nicotine or what ever your poison is,but the reality is that it is a WANT not a NEED!
If you have to stay away from activities that encourage you to relapse or you associate with smoking,then do so until you've become stronger.Neitsche was an asshole,but the sun shines on a gnat's ass every once in awhile,"What ever doesn't destroy me makes me stronger."
If you want to,you'll emerge from this a stronger ,more knowledgeable & imperically experienced person .Don't forget,good things come from bad experiences if you are able to look at it through the right perspective.

Don't give up, y'all! It takes a person who quits smoking an average of five attempts before they are successful. So just because you weren't successful this time around doesn't mean you CAN'T quit. The important thing is to keep trying.

I chewed for 2 and a half years and I quit cold on January 20th, thats right I know the friggin date. I haven't had one since, not one even when boozing. It was hard as hell sometimes but you do have to think of it as freeing yourself not depriving. It's just really nice not to need anything, not be addicted to any substance ( besides ski porn) plus smoking/chewing is so F!@&*% bad for you .. GOOD LUCK !! ;)
