You should:
1. Socialize the dog. This means expose it to outside stimulation, other dogs, kids, people, stairs, elevators, Home depot etc. Its great that its curling up w/ your kids and your dog...but sometimes dogs can get too close to their family. Since you have a Shepherd, you probably understand territoriality.
2. Socialize some more.
3. take her to a puppy class... they don't learn much, but its fun and a good way to see how she reacts to other animals.
4. Buy her a Yankees hat to tear up.
All that being said, watch for signs of trouble...food aggression, guarding toys, snapping at kids. These behaviors can happen w/ any dog. Usually training will take care of them.

Wife knows a family that has pit bulls, 2. Very well trained, won't fart without permission . Have another mutt which is the dominate dog(older) and a cat. We even had our dog board there. Grand kids there all the time , no problem. I've been there, supper dogs.
Ok story. This lady was walking dogs with 2 grand kids, 3-4 years. Some other kids are out with two small dogs, I guess one was off leash ran over yapping. Dogs took this as the threat to kids and lunged. Grandkids in way crying , other kids freaking, she was not able to pull dogs off and get grand kids out of way. One small dog dead. Unclear of details but second small dog now comes in to play wapping. Not sure if kids had held back but now yelling your dog killed my dog. Of course round two started and second small dog tore to shit and was later put down.
Now these were well trained dogs that never ever got away with anything but mix in stupid yappy dogs and stupid kids plus not having the strenght to control both dogs when "ON" . So there was a hearing and they had to fight not to have dogs put down. Had to pay fine, must wear muzzles outside and improve their fencing.
My Sis had a Pit for a long, long time. One of the friendliest, most loyal dogs I've ever known. However, she did get the dog as a puppy & the dog was as good with my newborn niece as any dog could be. No problems whatsoever.
They are, however, unpredictable. As any animal can be.
It sounds like you're doing the right thing. Get a pup that you know is bred to be a good family dog. Better for you, your family AND the dog.
thats sad, but it could happen with any dog. One day a neighbor's small terrier (who's been known to attack other dogs) was barking at my German Shepherd while we walked by (my dog on leash). Their kids thought it was so funny, they let the dog go, and it attacked my Shepherd, who normally likes all dogs, big or small. The only reason it didn't die was that I kicked it out of my Shepherd's grasp and kicked it twice more when it returned to attack.Quote:

The moron father jumped all over me for kicking his dog and yelling at his fat moron kids. While he was yelling at me, my Shepherd, who was on a down stay, locks eyes with fat ass moron dad and lets out a deep growl. I corrected him, but not too sternly.
We now get a wide berth and I don't see their dog out very often.
I don’t know what it is, but there sure are a lot of little dogs with attitude problems and bad dog manners. Owner created problem? Yes. There is absolutely no reason that a little dog has to be a little yippy pain is the ass dog.
Instead of kickin the dog in the butt when it nips at your heels, the owner should get a foot up the ass.
It could, but is the probability the same for every breed? Breeds have been developed for different purposes by breeding for physical and behavioral qualities. Sure they are all dogs but breeds do behave differentlyQuote:

I guess the point of the story on reflection is that even with good breeding ( they were bought from a breed who didn't breed for aggression) well as good as you can get with a pit bull/staffishire terrier , and training/control. If the situation goes bad you still have a muscle bound killing machine with and instinct for aggression.Quote:

Yeah I hear you on little dogs. We have a little dog, well 23lbs, and it never yapps or very rarely barks. When it sees a big dog it takes a second to size up the situation. Then if ok goes in to play.
