PSA: Mount your own fucking skis.

Got around to remounting some skis I bought from a guy who claimed he used to be a ski tech. He had recently remounted the bindings

Pulled them off and found out he had mixed blue Loctite with wood glue, wtf. Was still wet 2 weeks after install and some weird crumbly texture, although inside the holes themselves just seemed sort of greasy

Thankfully I could remount far away from those holes and they have metal in the top sheets (maybe that’s why he thought somehow putting Loctite was a good idea? “Wood glue for the wood core” and “Loctite for the thin metal layer”? )

For fucks sake. Should have taken pictures

Buddy had probably ran out of red loctite lol !

Buddy might still be high from whatever fumes resulted from that mixture.

Lots of companies make the holes on the bindings for the screws so tight that they engage the binding screw threads and make flushing the binding to the ski difficult to impossible. I like a tight hole as much as the next guy, but why the fuck do they do this, and is there any reason not to just open them up a bit to have them clear the screws? Isn't snugging the binding to the ski way more important? I did this on my last mount and skiied them one day and didn't die.

I think it’s solely so they can preinstall screws during manufacturing/shipping in the box without them falling out. Otherwise it’s just poor mechanical engineering design, should never have a screw threading into two adjacent parts in an assembly.

At this point I just drill or ream out the holes on my bindings before install so they become tight clearance thru holes

I use a RC car body reamer I’ve had forever, actually works very well to increase the diameter of plastic holes

Keep in mind some of the screws for the Dynafit product ARE different lengths or maybe the captured screws are some either some kind of

I'm reading Apocalypse Watch by Robert Ludlum so i may be triggered here

I guess if they're just threaded into plastic that they're expecting to yield when you're screwing in that's one thing, but on the Attack 13s I mounted it was the rearmost holes in the metal heel mounting plate that they were threading into which nobody would expect to yield before the ski materials. Also they do have different front and rear screw lengths so keeping them in the right locations is a lazy but valid reason, but at the very least they should put some sort of wording in the tech manual or a tag on the binding itself to open the holes up. Now that I know I'll always check but it's a key piece of information that could easily cause spinners and volcanoes.

Inserts=no spinners. Inserts=no volcanoes. They are not the answer for everybody but Ive found over the years that they are the answer.

I just got a pair of new one eighty fr dimes. I don't have a four point one bit or tap and was feeling lazy so took them to a shop. Marshal put on the ski, mount negative six from true center, negative eighty four from tail. Shop guy measured eighty four added six and basically mounted center. On the phone he didn't seem to comprehend the mess up and insisted he mounted according to the instructions. I wasn't likely to ski them this season anyways, but looks like Im ordering the bit and remounting myself this summer.

Not that I wouldn’t then proceed to mount them myself— but I’d be fucking irate at that shop, demanding refunds and all sorts of free waxes for essentially fucking up a very rare and hard-to-get ski.

Call again. And this time tell them we sent you.

Fuck that shop.

You know what that shop rat’s math is? That “measure twice to get to center?” That’s called weed.

Only people (ahem— people like myself) who have a history with weed and have also lived in societies where it’s not acceptable can identify, with pin-point accuracy, a stoner trying to function at work.

That sucks. Where you at? Someone here likely has the bit and tap you need.

At a minimum get your money back from the shop.

Or the ski could have a fucking line on it, make it easier for everyone.

I got a refund they offered a remount but I passed. I'm in rural mountain Colorado about, close to a small mountain that the fr dimes are perfect for, but a lack of quality shops. I just ordered a bit and tap. I have am100s coming in the fall so a worth while investment.

I agree on the line being on the ski, although I'd hope a shop isn't trusting top sheet lines and still measuring. I believe Marshals adding a line next year. Still I don't know the logic behind the math and agree with giajin either stoned or hung over to work that out. I should've measured and drawn the line myself.

Remounted my own fucking skis Removed HM12s and put on attack 14s

I have done every one of my mounts ever, with exception of the last two. That's probably ~50 mounts at this point.

Life is busy and stressful right now so I took 2 pairs of skis to a well known shop in Seattle this winter.

Line Vision 108s for an insert mount for MTNs, and SGN Toggas for a regular mount for Alpinists.

Both aren't great, but the Vision mount is F'd. I was putting storage wax on them today and realized the bases on one ski are dimpled so badly that the base material is delaminating from the core material under all 8 inserts. I called the shop, they said bring than back in to see if they can heat/pound the bases flat, then grind. I don't think there's enough base material to do that--I think these should probably be replaced.

The Togga mount is more annoying than anything, the heel piece one one ski is mounted a few mm further back than the other and the boot does not drop perfectly in to the pins, it actually hits the rubber sole material a little bit. That's annoying because I know I would have done better, and on a new pair of skis it feels very frustrating. I have decided I will live with this one because I don't think it will effect the way they ski and I can get my head around that.

I'll update after I get the Visions back to the shop. Hoping for some input on what my reasonable ask should be. Right now I feel like replacement is a reasonable ask.

Yep. The base is only 1.3mm thick, so not a lot of forgiveness there for a grind.

Always better to fuck it up yourself. Did it on a pair of new Stocklis&nbsp;but ground the screws shorter, then hit the bumps with a hammer and stone ground them and they were fine.</p>

Serves me right I guess. I was living away from home without the usual tools at hand, and I thought I could get away with one. MYOFS!

Ok, question. I’ve used my Jigarex to mount a ton of Attack and SPX but haven’t used it for a set of pivots yet for a variety of reasons (ie, thanks for the mounts Dibbs). Time to lace up a set of P14s to my daughters Bents.

I seem to remember reading in here that the Jigarex spacing may be off on the pivot jig plates. Didn’t see anything on a quick search but search sucks.

Anything I need to worry about on a pivot mount with a Jigarex or is it just point and shoot like normal? Or anything special on a pivot mount in general?

Do a test mount first. If it's off, adjust accordingly
