Have been interested enough to keep looking at this thread. Thanks for pricking the interest Buster et al.
It seems that Sedrun is amazingly well-located. I mean CH has lots of resorts and I know only a few of them. But for my purposes as someone who is interested in skiing moderate on-piste and more aggressively off-pisted I looked at several resorts. The SBB train system and the Little Red train seem to have good connections from Sedrun to all the places one might want to hit.
Also from what I know sometimes Graubuenden is thin and Valais is fat and sometimes it's reversed because of storms. It looks like Sedrun being near Andermatt is near the Obergoms pass where the storms seem to diverge depending on weather direction.
Anyhow posting a general map as I was ruminating on possibilities for a future trip. Vendul's place looks prime for a central location

10 miles from Briancon on the left^^^, a walled city designed by Napoleons Military architect, to Monetier les Bains on the right ^^^. All skiable with 1200 meters vertical drop average.
15 miles from Monetier Les Bains to La Grave.

Monetier Les Bain is a 5.5 hour drive from Rueras; leave at 15:30, arrive at 21:00

yes, Sedrun is really well located for bouncing to other places. My wife and I did the daytrip to St. Mo with the group and then about 1 h 15 minutes on the train to Klosters, but before I found out that was going to be an option, I had looked into trains to other places from Sedrun, and it's really accessible to a lot of places. Laax-2 hours, St. Moritz-3.5, Arosa-3, Klosters-3 all with trains going approximately every hour and with a schedule that allows you to ski a full day, hop a train, and arrive at location 2 for a late dinner. And then from all those places, it's 3-4 hours to Luzern, where you can overnight and catch the early morning train to Zurich airport (just a little over an hour) for your departure flight.Quote:

Buster, have you given any thought to Prali as an option on this itinerary? I don't know anything about it other than the occasional mention of "the valley which shall not be named" or some crap like that. But the consensus for most seems to be to stay closer to Rueras and not bother with the 6 hour drive getting over to Serre Chevalier/LG and back. So let's see how stuff develops. I would very much like to go back to LG.
If there's no other interest in a road trip, it looks like there's trains that leave Andermatt at 12:40, 14:40 or 15:40 that get into Oulx, Italy at 19:30, 21:30 and 22:30, respectively. From there can get a ride from there via Taxi de La Meije which takes about an hour and a half. Or better yet, stay in Oulx that night and ski across the Milky Way to Montgenevre and get taxi from there.
Spent a season in Serre Che, and it’s a great place. Can get skunked, though, if storms come from NW or N. Vicinity to La Grave huge bonus. Skied Alagna back in 1990 when the old lifts were in place. Insane area with massive lines.

I will be here waiting for next year and anyone who wants to come back out here to the Alps and ski the Gotthard again. Also, give consideration to the La Grave proposal. It's an f*ing amazing hill, with several other options in the area depending on weather and conditions. The biggest difference I'd say is the lack of trains and requirement for vehicle transport. The trains sure are amazing for getting around freely in Switzer-stan!
