Meanwhile, has it not occurred to anyone else that a heavy, over priced, motor assisted bike is probably the best application for gearbox the world has ever known?

Nailed it. Hadn’t thought a bought the gear box but ya, perfect application
I’m not sure but I think the lapierre frames are the same for 140 and 160mm (different stroke shocks)and have fazau motor option. I know their regular trail/ enduro frame is the same but I haven’t confirmed on the e bike . No need for altered geo with the fazua motor as it’s all in front of the B.B. A 180 fork on it would tick your overall travel requirement and weight. I think the 7k budget might get blown but maybe the aluminium one is under 7. Not sure on battery cost. Still preliminary info on the fazua trickling out. Not sure how lapierre distribution is in North America after restructuring. I think I’d want support in country until all this new tech gets the shake down. That lapierre without the fazua motor installed is a normal 30lb enduro rig with normal geo(short chain stay), almost two kikes in one, or 3 if you have both stroke shocks
Agree. I ride with my family a lot and we end up swapping the E-Bike among us so someone is always happy. Sometimes it's the only way to convince a teenager to put down the phone for a while. I usually take the uphill segments on one of the non-powered bikes to preserve the fun factor for them.
Pretty sweet deal. Ships from jolly ol England. Throw on a 160-170 fork, 8” rotors and maybe tires

Was out at a new area that is under construction today. Some great new trails.
I asked the Project Manager about their E-bike policy (BLM Land).
Not allowed, that was an agency decision.
Ha!
If I was going to sink 17K into ebikes I would get three $5,600 Species so I could have bikes to borrow for people to ride with. Like Brando in the Wild Ones!
Or I would see if jgb could hook me on that Maserati deal if I was in a spending mood.
Not sure exactly precisely how this fits in, but it's gotta be somewhere.
Big step up from baseball cards and a clothes pin.
Just put a 1500watt motor on a Kona Minute (mid tail cargo bike) and it is fun as shit to rip around town. That is all.
Sorry for the link, but I was unable to upload the video.

Chipped my commuter.
It goes 35 now, wicked Pissah fun. (Still pedalec)
Don't tell the cops.
Met a couple 13 year old groms on their electric mtbs bombing TRT single track last week. Progression and annoying
I got passed by an e-bike while I was waiting for my wife at the top of a climb. My wife showed up and I took off after e-bike guy in pursuit mode, just as I was catching him towards the bottom of the hill the trail braided. I took a different route that he did and pinned it up through a short technical bit, when the trails became one again I was in front of him. I pedaled through some more technical shit then the trail got flat and smooth and he wanted around me, I heard, "Hey, can I get by you?" so I said, "Ya sure" but kept moving, he went around me in the grass and sticks (and pokey little fucking cactus things that ensure people who ride off the trail get flats). About 4 minutes later I passed him pushing his bike with a flat, I could have been nice but I just said, "Hey, can I get by you?" and pedaled on by with my spare tube, pump and tools. I'm such a dick. :)
13 year olds... now that bugs me. I mean, come on.
Having said that, I have yet to see someone descending on one of those things in a way that makes me jealous. They always look sluggish, especially when hitting upslopes / jumps into berms, like they’re too heavy to rotate sideways far enough in the air.
Was at a TH in Big Sky this weekend and saw a guy in full cammo with his archery setup headed out to stalk the wily Wapiti. He got there via the road as the trail to the trail head is clearly marked non-motorized. We chatted a bit and he was stoked to be able to get into the woods, except all the trails leaving the TH are also non-motorized. I coached him on how to ride a couple of roads to reach a moto trail.
He was doubly stoked.
Saw a 50ish yo woman on an emotorbike on the TRT last week. It was a moderately technical spot (Watson Creek area) and she was doing the seated pushing with one foot thing, not sure if she was out of juice or just in over her head, though I'm guessing it's the latter as this was a downhill section. Didn't realize she was breaking the rules until she was past me, so couldn't call her out for being a dumbass. Didn't look like she was having fun, though, so maybe she learned a lesson.
Also finally actually lifted one up the other day for the first time. It was the Trek fs, which I imagine is one of the better engineered models. I was expecting heavy, but damn, it's like the motor and battery are made of lead, and this coming from someone that rides a fairly stout bike.
Depends on the rider, if your a skilled rider your not gonna have a problem on a ebike.

The new specialized that’s being announced next week looks interesting, rumor is 40% greater range in a lighter package

That pic looks like a really small easy air, not sure if it proves anything about ebikes. All the skilled, very skilled riders that I know and have ridden them have a completely different opinion than you do. Not saying they hate them, but on steep tricky downhills I've heard they can be awkward. I'm sure they are fine for a lot of trails though. I'd like to try one at some point.
Have not ridden one myself so take anything I say with a grain of salt. Just seen what a couple buddy’s can do on em and have seen them out ride me on steep tech trails but that’s prolly just cause I suck.
IDK if this is a surprise, but ebikes are 20% of Specialized’s business now.
Once I got the hang of controlling the extra mass I found it plenty easy to launch and move the bike around. You do have to give a bit of extra thought to when you brake and how hard to brake going into some maneuvers and depending on the system (torque sensors or what have you) a bit of a pedal stroke at the right time will make all the difference in pulling through something smoothly or arguing with it. Like I said though, once you get the timing down it's all easy.
Not surprised. Last summer around Tahoe I saw maybe a few e-bikes all summer. This year I feel like I see one every time I go on a ride. I did appreciate last weekend when a couple of them passed us on a fire road climb, one of the guys said something like, "Sorry, I know we're cheating." lol... now that mentality I can respect.
I have to admit, once they're closer to 35 pounds and under $6k I'd be pretty interested in being able to squeeze in more downhills in an afternoon. But I suspect it will be a while before both of those things happen.
I've ridden a levo, rocky altitude and 2019 giant trance ebike and they are a shit load of fun.
The Rocky stands ahead of the rest in power and really feels like my Enduro when descending. It handled all the drops and jumps on my local dh trails and I pedaller to the top without breaking a sweat.
2019 Giant was only a parking lot test but it is close to the Rocky in power.
Levo is a top notch trail bike but not enough travel for me, the Knevo would be a better match.
Norco has a few models coming out for 2019 that look interesting also.

No they aren't motorcycle.
I bet within a year you'll be pro e mountain bikes.
What's the downside?

Heard Winter Park advertising that they are giving E-bike tours of the mountain now.
Thats a good question. I'll ask.
I don't think I will buy one if they aren't allowed in most places, so that 80% seems high to me. But I don't really have a clue where you actually can go with them so take that with a grain of salt. Is everyone just planning on doing it illegally anyways since there is no enforcement?
But it's good to hear everyones opinions on them.
I think that everyone will be overwhelmed by the explosion in e mountain bikes. And the regulators will be forced to accept them.
As will be the old folks on horses.

EMTB race this Saturday at Northstar. Has a pro category. Totally stoked! cannot wait to see who has a bigger motor! Now that is competition!
