Walked into the LLS after work and they had Sragg Jr. on the shelf. Every time I asked the owner to order some she'd laugh and say she couldn't get it. What a great surprise. I know some think it's over rated, but I like it.
My LLS has had Stagg jr on the shelf constantly for a few months now, which I think is great. Priced pretty reasonably too. I like to add a small splash and let it rest for a few, seems to turn the heat down and let the flavors come forward.
Not bourbon, but Sagamore Spirit Rye Whiskey is a good cheap sub.

Next time I open this one I'll have to finish it off. We bought this one right at the end of the golden age of the barrel programs (when they were abundant and often generously discounted) and you could still order their single barrels uncut. Right as rain at 55.9%.

^Looks great. My favorite is OBSK, OESK runs a close second. Those old 55+% barrels look awful sweet.
"It's just a shady industry." This was an interesting watch. Not so much that it was news to me, but that it's a mainstream news story now:

I'm ready for the bourbon/rye craze to be over. Everyone - move to rum.
The old grandad 114 is making its way into my rotation, really like it and since bookers price jumped to retarded status it's nice to have something reasonably priced.
I like their rye a lot, though it's not my first choice for the price. Their Absinthe is really fucking good too.
I'll be sure to stop by the tasting room and sample the other whisky offerings next time I'm in the area. Thanks for reminding me!
There's a special release of spirits not typically available in my area happening next week. Any recommendations? http://bcliquorstores.com/sites/defa.../summerwhisky/
Turns out Bob Dylan is opening a distillery here in Nashville.
Will the labels be unreadable gibberish?

I think Johnny is in the basement mixin it up.
Tangled Up In Booze
Everything is crazy right now. Soon to be Tequila shortage, Japanese Whiskey shortage and through the fucking roof if you're into that sort of thing, last year's wine harvest was one of the worst in decades all over the world.
Rum/Rhum is certainly on the up and up. If you wanna be hip, throw a tiki party this summer.
Kiddo got me a bottle of Willet for padre's day. Nothing good to report. Not sure how, but it tastes flat. Ice doesn't even help. Your opinion may differ.
Picked up a bottle of Bullit Barrel Strength which was excellent.
I was in Cuba last month and picked a 3 year rum and 7 year Havana Club rum. The 7 year is delicious, and much better than a 10 year Bicardi. That said I still prefer my whiskeys. I could see bourbon drinkers moving to rum though as bourbon seems to be a sweeter whiskey.
sammy hagar jumped on the rum....

I've dabbled in a few decent bourbons around $50-100, but never really been hooked by it. A buddy threw a bid of $200 on a bottle of Eagle Rare 17year ($675) at an non-profit fundraising auction recently and won. It's been enjoyed by a few of us in a rather crude manner for the quality of the product... I can't imagine ever spending that much, but it is damn good.
Went to my cousin's wedding in Louisville around 1995. Came home with a case of Maker's Mark. Couldn't get it in Texas where I was living at that time. Now it's pretty much everywhere, but doesn't taste nearly as good as it did back then purchased locally.
Oops.

Was at Jack Rose last night--only come to DC once every few years so haven't been in a long time. Had some excellent drinks--some 1986 8yr Wild Turkey 101, Henry McKenna BiB from just before the fire in 96. Both amazing, I'll be hunting on the secondary now. Makes me wish I hadn't opened some of the newer limited bottles I have so I could use them as trade bait.
Finished the night off with some old Ardbeg, which was very good but also annihalated my palate for the night. Wonderful night, and glad I am not closer because I would kill my wallet.
That is a tragedy for sure! Wonder if there will be some drunk ass trout in the adjacent stream.
Went and did a tasting at JP Trodden in Woodenville this weekend (https://www.jptrodden.com/the-bourbon). Pretty good stuff. Bought a bottle of the black label. The cask strength was a bit much. The red label was great but too pricey for me and I was looking for a good all around Old Fashioned/Manhatten base so the black label fit the bill. Also if you go there, next door is DeStephano Winery which conveniently makes a set of really good Vermouths.
My wife is taking a road trip with the kiddos, going to be in the Lexington area for a day. Any recommendations on a place for her to stop and pick up a nice bottle for a buddy’s 40th? Looking for something you can’t buy in a normal liquor store in CO and I don’t know much about bourbon. Did a google search and feels a bit overwhelming to pick one out considering my lack of knowledge.

Any chance you hit Louisville during the trip? I highly recommend Angel's Envy. A few blocks away is the Jim Beam store, and they have a lot of stuff not normally available in stores, like the Signature Craft. Old Forrester just opened up a tasting room there, too.
Don't know Lexington very well, even though I've worked with the university a bit.
Nope, she’s coming from Cincinnati

You're in Cincinnati? Been here for close to two years.
Nope, Chicago but my wife is going from the Cinncy area to the Lexington area

Nice bump. Reminds me I need a new bottle. I drank the last of my OGD last night.
Time to go knock on a few office doors at the local liquor joints.
That looks nice. 3 hours, time for a review?
