Made my day, too.
My wife and I saw the premier of “festival express” at the beacon theatre bin San Francisco. We weren’t aware that it was the premier until we got there. I felt like we were 20 years younger than everybody else. A really fun film.
^^^they did some pre release thing of the footage in the mid 90s in nyc... at the time, pre streaming of course, it seemed like a big deal
I had not seen all this 76 interview until today: https://youtu.be/80dcUvmVWzM
Some great nuggets in there...
I had come across an article from a local Ithaca newspaper about the 5/8/77 show and laughed as it referenced “Hallelujah Lightening” in the set list.
I feel like I hadn’t listened to that show in a long time, so I cued it up this afternoon. I’m more convinced than ever that it’s popularity is based primarily on the crisp booters that were so widely available back in the day. Don’t be mistaken, the Dancin’ 1st set closer and the Dew to close the 2nd are top performances of those tunes, but it is not the best show ever and is not even the best show of May ‘77.
That’s it. I’m on record.
“Play California!”
I really like the Scarlett > Fire a lot, too, from that show.
For some reason, I’ve recently heard/watched videos of “so-so reacts to the cornell 1977 Morning Dew” twice and I shed tears. For me, I think the emotional reaction is related to general life stress and tension. The same recently happened watching and listening to a well shot vid of them playing Dear Mr Fantasy/Hey Jude.
I didn’t know or had forgotten about the 90’s era release of footage. My favorite parts of the film were seeing pigpen in action, Janet in action, and the drunken jam session on the train.
Thanks for the interview. I’m about half way through.
I always find my way back to the Mosque for May ’77. Scarlet>Fire>Estimated>He’s Gone>Drums>TOO>Wharf Rat>TOO>Wheel is sublime to my ear.
Might be my big ol' Klipsch running warm by the woodstove tonight but this show really makes me appreciate Phil...clean and tight. Keith sprinkling in sweet on piano too.
When Wolf blew like a saxophone & clarinet.

Pretty sure Wolf made it's first synth (Roland mounted predecessor to true midi retro some time later in 89) appearance at Alpine that summer replacing the black strat that he was using during space, 2nd night space (the crowd roar was memorable when everyone realized he was playing Wolf) through most of the 2nd set if I remember correctly and then again for a portion of the 19th show. Probably my favorite 3 night run I ever saw.
HBD!
5/19/77 fox - talk about a confident arrangement goddamn that sugaree just sets the tone.

9/28/72 Greatest Story Ever Told has Jerry shredding and bending through the solo until he trips out into St. Stephen for a bit. Bobby exclaims, “Well folks, I think something blew up!” when it’s all over. Whoa!
Check out this NFA>Sugar Mags.

Whoa, I’ve never heard this show before. My goodness! They have trouble landing the jam on Jack Straw, but it doesn’t matter, it bristles with energy. Phil drops all the bombs!
Jump like a Willys in four wheel drive! Man, I love this band.
Love it when Carlos and Jerry get going it’s a serious showdown!

I was listening to Ithaca 77 Brown-Eyed Women the other day and this thought occurred to me. It is really, really clean. That said, I do think it's one of the best BEW I've ever heard. Jerry was just having one, plain and simple. Even the first 5 seconds are notable.
Fun fact: My oldest daughter literally entered the world to Jack Straw from the same show. Had the phone on shuffle at the hospital. Always one of my favorites so it seemed fitting.

I gotta say, this is as good as I've heard Bob in many years.

I caught a Wolf Bros show on the first tour, super enjoyable sets.
Is Bobby really wearing Capris, Birkenstock’s, and socks?
Oh, my.
Not that it matters...but he is a self avowed fashion maven.
Rideit- dude has been sporting that look for 15yrs.
On another note. Does anyone know if we buy the St. Paddy’s webcast...do we have it available indefinitely? 5-8mtn ain’t gonna work for me but given the last round I’d be happy to spring for this one of I could watch later.
Haha, if he were hiking on a trail grooving on the vortexes (and I didn’t recognize him) I probably wouldn’t start chatting...
First Album dropped on 3/17/1967 and this cut was played live the next night.

One of only two 'originals' on the album.

It's available for a few more days, I am re-watching now. I found the whole thing absolutlely phenomenal. The Wolf Bros alone are sort of boring but with Chimenti + pedal steel the entire show, and horns/fiddle/cello(?) for lots of it, it was just outstanding. After Shakedown and Let it Grow they could've been done and I would've gotten my $20 worth, but then they played for almost three more hours.
Absolutely dank af. Only complaint is that they were putting the emphasis on the wrong syllables in the chorus to Whiskey in the Jar.
These just came into the shop

Was listening to that on my way to work this morning, it was TIGDH show of the day. The first of 3 multi-show runs they did at Winterland in ‘77. They played the second half of the second set. St Stephen>The Other One, massive.
Didn’t get to the end of the set.
Just sitting down with my new 76 box set and a case of Utica Club. Things are looking up.
