Yeah, I wish they worked out better for me. I'm still on the fence regarding the fit, I'll probably try a Pro Tour liner in them and see what's up. My sentiments echo the Mercury review from Earlyups, and I modded them basically the same way as Jeff over there - Krypton B tongue, Booster, ground out the cuff stops.
Since my ski season ended in March, I haven't been in them for a while, but the problems seem to be funny instep pressure (though I've ground the nub off), though only with the Krypton tongue. I'll need to heat the tongue up and re-shape to eliminate that pressure. Having said that, there's still too much overall volume through the boot. I basically feel like my foot is swimming in the boot though my instep is pinched (and I don't have a high instep, either). I only like the flex characteristics when the krypton tongue is in - without them, the boot is entirely too soft, even with the stock tongues.
I'd like to try some more fucking around fitting wise, but the Mercury/Maestrale RS shootout on Earlyups sounds right to me. The Maestrale is what I'm probably supposed to be in, due to the flex pattern and the fit. I'll try to put the bump-stops back in the Mercury, and sell them at the start of the season to recoup some cash/buy the RS.
I about gave up on these boots because of the cramped fit on my high volume foot. I didn't want to go back to the quadrants so I took them to a bootfitter (again) and bought some intuition liners (the dalbello virus tongue liner). Now they fit perfect. Glad I didn't give up on them.
I realize this answer may be buried in the previous 28 pages, but, is anybody running these in alpine binders occaisionally? I vaguely remember Hoji speaking about the area under the toe being set up for use with an alpine binder w adjustable toe height i.e. Salomon... any experience here?

So my Vulcans arrived this week after trying a friend's Mercury's last winter but feeling like I wanted a bit more boot. €580 right now at yellowsportshop.com by the way Euro guys. Initial impressions at home, with my old Virus Intuition liners (pretty much a Pro Tour): fantastic fit and flex.
I've got a spare set of 3-layer Booster straps I might as well throw on these. I've used Boosters on my alpine boots for over 10 years, always under the shell overlap which works wonders for my skinnier-than-thou legs. Has anyone run Boosters this way on a Vulcan/Mercury? It could go under the overlaps but over the removable tongue, or under the removable tongue but over the rubbery part. On my alpine boots I dremel out notches at 3 and 9 o'clock of the cuffs to allow this, but I might just attach them 10mm higher than the standard strap to avoid having to cut the expensive carbon cuff!
^^^ try them first without booster straps. i got addicted to the quick transition aspect of not even bothering with the straps. The upper cuff is so stiff i wonder just how much the boosters even add
lee, have you skied the new tlt6? thoughts vs. vulcan?
curious specifically how much lower the cuff is...

My Vulcans are the same size as my alpine boots (which fit pretty tight themselves); the Vulcans shell-check slightly smaller but feel fine to wear. One friend of mine who wears his alpine boots a little big has Mercurys in the same size. My alpine boots are 28.5 kr2 pros that have been worked over heavily. My vulcans are 29 and feel good so far stock.

lots of toe room while still having a good snug fit thru the fest of the boot
Damn, I got a set of Powerwraps yesterday and molded them for the Vulcans today. These are some stiff touring boots. I can't wait to ski on my 192's with these, the titans weren't enough to really push the big bros in variable conditions. I think these will be.
I'm also in the KR2s - curious to hear how the Vulcans ski stiffness and response wise comparatively once we get into winter... Like the powerwrap Vulcans combo moveQuote:

Well Lee, you don't weigh 240 pounds. I'm afraid the lower shell is going to crack on a real cold day with the way it flattens when I flex into the boots.
