I went to UCSB, so I know all about that island blockage. I always surfed alot during the summer there, but it was usually Sands waist high windswell, with the occasional Ventura or Malibu trip. The area around UCSB gets more summer surf than one would think, and I always went out at least a few days a week, but it was usually random waist high windswells. When we got chest high windswell, we were pretty pumped. You really had to live in IV to get those days. Malibu was closer than people would think, it was usually only an hour and change to County Line.

Fall is our hot season up here. Summers are foggy, at least in the mornings and keep things cool. Once fall rolls around, the fog goes away and the day begins warming up early. Our best days tend to be in October.

Interesting that it was fallish up there. Down here has been insanely hot for most of the last few weeks. The water is in the low 70's and it's 90 outside my office right now.

Good to hear positive mention of Mt Baldy. Looks great when there's snow from what I've seen. Won't be getting a pass this winter so will be flexible to get up to Baldy when it's good.

I hear ya, but even summer wind swells have been few and far between. I usually go north (West)...but it just hasn't been worth it this summer. This weekend will be a shit show, so I'm going to grab my bike and head into the mtns over this holiday weekend. SB turns into a mini LA with all the people that come into town...and into the limited lineups.

Ott- The NPAC has shown signs of life as early as July...hopefully the teasing pays off.

Do you have a Mt. Baldy virtual pass?

If you plan on going a fair bit it is a great deal. Last year was terrible, and mine still ended up being worth it. Baldy is a fun little mountain, when it has a base.

I would definitely get a virtual pass if you want to get some days in. Even if the season is bad, you are only spending 114, so it is not a big risk.

I have never had a problem getting a reservation there.

Looks like a fun weekend coming up, combo SSW swell and S hurricane swell. Hooked a 5am boat ride tomorrow morning to a lesser known point break in SD that faces about 180, could be game on. Except for that nasty sewage spill in IB, seems every year millions and millions of gallons of raw sewage spew out the TJ river. Sad.

SM159, agree on the early July note, but it has become more progressive recently. The fantasy charts keep showing a more significant dent of low in the gulf in the upcoming week. Not a real swell maker, and certainly not for SB, but it makes me happy to see the movement.

Speaking of surf, has anyone seen any tet down there in SCal? Hoping this thing arrives up here by late in the day. Not really into paddling out if there arn't waves to fight for.

It's definitely showing in socal. I'm hoping to get out of here in a half hour or so, and get a Newport afternoon session in. My outside sales buddies already have 2 sessions in today, they said Newport is shoulder-head consistently, with sets a bit overhead. The wind is not too bad, so I think the afternoon session should still be fun. I will probably head to Trestles the next couple of days.

I had a feeling the boat ride would fall through and sure enough the guy decided to bail. No biggie, I made sure to indulge in extra free beer and wine last night at the AHA benefit, knowing the mission today was off.

Little sluggish this morning so got on it around 8:30am in Encinitas, beach breaks were crossed up and punchy. About shoulder to head high on the high tide. Definitely no where near high surf advisory at Dstreet but still managed to catch a sick wedgey left on my last ride in, tried to go as vert as I could on my frontside snaps....felt really good. Loving that Slackerr for sure

My buddy and I wound up surfing @ trail 6 both Friday morning & this morning, as well as body surfing sessions at Salt Creek in the afternoons. Body surfing Salt Creek today was interesting to say the least, 6-8ft faces with no floatation device - HA-ha.

Sounds like you had a good time and got some good waves Piggity, right on.

Thanks for taking pics. No dice last night up here, other than two chin high sets that came through. The buoy looked much better this morning as I packed the car. OTOH, the biking and beer were just fine here in the beautiful valley that is now Vailwood.

I'm counting on things getting better from here on out. The season starts at Labor Day, so I'm excited. Waves will come soon. If not, I'll keep peddling until they do.

Actually, those crowds look a bit more than I'd like, and I bet SC was no better today. Perhaps being out of town was best, especially with the wind we have been getting.

That's one of my favorite spots down there. Still trunking it? OB had some head high waves today as I left for Russian River. Caught my first large mouth bass right after sun went down. Knee is good, back to work, anticipate standing up on my first wave in 16 weeks in another week or two. Can't wait for those hot offshore Fall days.

Got some for basically the first time ever today at Kuta Beach in Bali. Mostly surfing the white wash close to shore, but I caught one wave that was maybe mid thigh high right as it broke and rode it well. The feeling when the board hooked up reminded me of a night a long time ago when I was 16. :)

Was mostly like this photo below, though... Going back for a few more days of school.

Oh, and I said it in the other thread too, but when you lean over two hours later and water pours continously out of your nose means your doing it right?

Also, if anyone was doubting the rumors about how fucking tacky Kuta Beach is...holy shit..in three visits to Bali this is the first time I've had the chance to get out and about and see it(usually just on the way in/out of the country). If you come to Bali stay somewhere off the strip there.

headed further north this AM to carlsbad. Had a nice wedgey peak about head high putting through some barrels across the sandbar. I surfed like I was hung over, but I wasn't, and of course didn't get shacked. Still caught a few fun ones but nothing remotely close to high surf advisory or big in any way shape or form. This swell was overhyped down here. Did see some good size sets at the jetty but all the lineups were juiced with heads making it not worth the paddle battles

It's an ugly town, but Padangbai rights are pretty nice, and usually pretty empty. Canggu also for rights, but WOW has that got built up in a the last decade.

Friday afternoon in Newport was fun. Slightly overhead, and building. The wind was not too bad, and there were fun corners to be had.

Saturday was a bit big for Newport, so I headed down to Trestles. There was a bit more wind than I expected, but it was still insane. I surfed the barbedwires/south cotton's area, and it was super fun. Head high, with sets a foot or two overhead, the wind looked worse than it actually was. It would peak outside, with steep but soft takeoffs that were a bit bumpy. It was a dropin to a big cutback, then it would line up across the inside, and you could pump down the line into another cut back, then another lined up section finishing up with a nice lip to hit. Many of the better lefts were 100+ yards. I found a spot in between most of the pack, and got wave after wave. The area where I was looked a bit bumpier than much of the rest of the zone which kept people from paddling out, and made me very lucky. It was one of my best sessions of the summer, and the water was still around 70. These are the weekends that really make me love where I live.

I will probably hit up Newport for an evening session, then another Trestles run tomorrow. I am not quite up for the drive to Trestles today, which is a shame since I'm sure it is pumping.

The length of trip has probably been the biggest holdup so far. I've been mainly doing 4-5 day trips the past few years, so Indo has been a non-starter. Fiji is on the list too, but probably less realistic though.

Yesterday was pretty warm probably 68-69 degrees and today was slightly cooler, probably around 66 or so. It's definitely a fun little wave, it always seems to produce some nice bowls on small-medium size swells

I got my ass kicked all morning in nasty currents.

My instructor suggested a certain place tomorrow afternoon to "bring a towel, bring your camera, your family, and cold beer" sounds like it's supposed to be big tomrorow afternoon. Don't know anything about that. But one more day to go in my lesson package. I managed to learn both front and backside turns today on small stuff. I understand why this turns into a passion for people...

My list is non-ending, so peru certainly fit in there somewhere. Time, responsibilities and money are my primary obstacles. I think the next trip idea involves something similar to Salani, where you are pretty much the only surfers out at the reef in front of the village. There's also a few outer islands near tahiti, one is a disgusting heavy right reef. Sucks the guy with the boat bailed and took his wife out to lunch instead of scoring empty 8' dredgers, biggest buzz kill ever.


This morning was sort of fun, some head high sets still and nice peaks. I saw some perfect inside barrels forming up but I opted for the less perfect and less crowded peak, got a few fun lefts. Bring on winter.

Winter is slowly working her way in. Might even get a 4@15 this comin weekend. From the Gulf. Yay!

Turns out my favorite little spots were pretty uncrowded this past weekend. Should be in the water in a few hours and might just have to surf alone. Oh, well.

Ridiculous fun today. Surfed Barbedwire's/Cotton's from 145 to 430, and only got out of the water because my arms were about to fall off. When I first got there it was about head high and soft, also a bit bumpy from the wind. I found a spot and just got wave after wave, though they were a bit soft. As the tide dropped, it started to really line up well, and there was a bit of juice. Instead of dropping in and having it mush out, it would got a bit racy, although still very easy to surf.

There were only a couple of us in this little zone, while Cotton's and Uppers had people paddling over each other. Another session where you feel like you paddle back out, and get another wave immediately. It was another great afternoon, and I probably would have stayed out longer if my arms weren't dead. It's actually lucky I will be in the office for a few days, as my arms are dead. The water temp dropped a bit, but it was still in the high 60's so a spring suit was fine.

What a weekend. I hope everyone else had as much fun as I did. I love the Barbedwire's zone when it is like this, as it makes me feel like I am a better surfer than I am. I love summer in Orange County. If only the surfline guys would put up a high definition beach view cam for Salt Creek......

EDIT: It's not quite 9 am Tuesday morning, and while sitting in my cube I've already checked surfline several times. It looks like Newport should be really fun right now. Hopefully one of you guys is getting some right now.

Still waves around here tonight. Surfed up near San Mateo last night and was pleased that the wind died, leaving behind head high, if lumpy, fast walls. And today netted some punchy slaby lefts at and old friends place. Finally, a little surf. Feel good.

Right on fellas, sounds like everyone got their gills wet and had fun in the process.

The weather was shit with the rain and humidity but the wind held off for most of the day today and North OC was going off as I suspect it will be tomorrow as well. I surfed Salt Creek in the afternoon (3-5pm), it was head high, a little wind affected but if you could line one up off the point it was connecting into Middles with some fast racey sections and an occasional cover up, it was a super fun day of surfing for sure. The wife and I spent Sun- Tues in the Eastern Sierra procuring a our winter haven for the 1000” winter this year so I missed the rest of the weekend swell, thanks to everyone for the reports and stoke.


Oh yeah, NO KIDS IN THE LINE UP! Today was the first day of school for everyone and summer is definitely over for the masses.
