PSA: Mount your own fucking skis.

For the future or anyone reading this, any time you are removing a binding screw if it doesnt come RIGHT AWAY some heat will usually break the bond

if you used epoxy it will probably need heat or if you didn't do the instal you don't know what glue was used so give it some heat

the trick is remembering this before you fack the screw head up which i have done even tho i know better

those particular dynafit Torx ( ? ) screws were more problematic than PZ screws as i remember and i would use heat just on spec

I've had driver tips break off like this before, they seem pretty locked in there but pop out sometimes with little effort. Some heat or cold is where I would start first, with a dental pick to work at it. After that, drill it out with a cobalt drill bit.

Nope, definitely mean carbide. Good carbide bits are way harder than the cobalt stuff. It’s the go to material for end mills and the like for a reason.

Unless you want to spend way too much, cobalt bits on hardened steel works just fine. BTDT more times than I like to admit.

Try twisting the whole toepiece to turn the screw

Yeah I tried that to no avail. Tried to spin the bit to heat it up several times then chisel it out after. Tried the carbide bit but couldn't get it to penetrate. Didn't try the Dremel or sautering iron (don't own one). Dropped it off at the shop today for the bolt removal and remount. Remount failur on my part, but at least I didn't fuck up my own fucking skis. Thanks for the tips. If I wasn't working as much right now I'd have given a better try but it would be nice to ski these this weekend.

And now the ski shop wants nothing to do with it and had me pick them up. What a pain in the ass.

I’d try the Dremel cutoff wheel and/or see if I could drive the tip of an awl under a corner.

Mounted my own fucking skis. Couldn’t find my tap so used a binding screw. Boot center on these looked crazy forward so went -3.

Back in the day. Any freehand pin mounts would only do one front screw. Then you align the actual boot with the heel pins. And carefully mark the other toe screws before drilling them.

I was wondering why the shop didn’t charge me for the mount. Got my ski outside and realized they mounted one ski incorrectly, then plugged the ski and didn’t mention this to me.

Shop guy was understanding, offered to replace the ski but being a custom I didn’t feel like that was completely necessary. I don’t see myself changing the binding/ski for a long time.

$300 store credit and a free mount for messing up one of my skis. I’ll call it even, sometimes if pays to not mount your skis Attachment 490769

It could be the fittings.

You can align the toe using the boot as a lever and snug the screws so the heel drops straight on the pins then let the epoxy cure.

Yep JA is right. You can totally overcome that by loosening the toe piece, aligning the boot and then tightening the toe screws to maintain that orientation.

The shop did that to my girlfriends skis. They got a new one for her and remounted. She was bringing mine in for a base weld and tune at the same time, which they also did free. I was stoked.
