He decided it just wasnt stable. Cancelled the third opinion appointment. Wrote a big check to the facility today, will be there to get sliced tomrrow by Cooley at 7:45 am. The reality of a lost season is starting to hit and its tough to watch. Hes super posisitive and super motivated though so itll be all good once he gets on the other side, I hope.
His goal is to heal fast enough and strong enough to attend the Frank on skis in April, even if hes just tooling around. 9.5 months. We shall see.
Wish us luck. Hes a great guy and truly one of the best skiers in that canyon. In the 5 seasons he's been there hes gone from really good to breathtaking. Skiing with him at that mountain is bizarre - the deference and respect he gets from all these hot shit young guns is wild (and then they look at me and try to figure out why HE is sking with this old guy - I guess Im old to a 20 something haha.) Hilarious.
I am, quite frankly, terrified of the idea he might not get it back. I will do everything I can to help him. I know you've been down this exact road Telefree - only for your guy it is also his profession. Makes it even tougher. Sorry you had to feel all this stuff Im feeling. Thanks for letting me vent, and wish us luck.
And truly, toi all of you - thanks for all the help. Tough enough when its you going under the knife. Even tougher when its your kid and its impacting their favorite thing in the whole world, and something that they are great at.
That kid has a great dad.
Know that. I think he does...
Patience is a virtue, practice it if you can. Found seldom in a woman and never in a man.
Our kids keep us young. They also scare the shit out of us cause their shenanigans are so much bigger. It’s a beautiful day and I’m not gonna let it slip away.
All done. Successful straight forward surgery we are told. He just had to do the ACL, nothing else was an issue. Everything looked great he said. Now comes the fun part.
Thanks again for everything Mags.
If it was a straightforward surgery there's no reason he can't be back to 100% or nearly 100%. I wouldn't worry to much.
Agree.
No miniscus damage is huge...
Whew!
Agreed, the future is bright, even if he doesn't do any breath work ;)
You and your son are in my prayers, EWG.
EWG,
Best wishes for your son. He’ll recover fine, I’m sure. And soon “this too shall pass”.
Best of luck with a quick and strong recovery.
FWIW with the larger/broader discussions, when I was (unintentionally) receiving a fourth opinion from a younger sport med doctor at uc davis sports med clinic about me fubar knee, they shared a generalized recommendation that athletes, like skiers, should consider wearing stability braces like don joy customs to avoid knee injuries. They pointed out to me that many college football teams required those braces to be worn. The doctor normally practices in NM and football and skiing injuries are their jam. I also have read that many pros immediately ditch the braces as soon as they enter the nfl.
Makes total sense to wear knee braces for protection of ACL injury. Its takes a year to be back in full form after a blown one. Course there is the head stuff that takes longer...
That joint evolved for us to be on all fours. But no, we got a 5ft. used to be 6ft. lever generating what forces on it?
As a patrolman, it was hard to stay positive with a person that one suspected blew their ACL knowing what the next year held for them. Been my experience that some folks have better joints/ligaments provided with their birthright.
Wish they had these braces back in the day; my joints suck. And they did not get that way from jumping cliffs or skiing bumps. Came with years of heavy use, I guess.
Super glad that the med community can replace joints, etc., that keep me and mine rollin... The shit they are doin with joints now?
As a member of ACL Class 2021, I have never felt stronger than i do now or let alone the last couple seasons.... I skied 124 days 22/23 with a lot of proud lines since. The rehab will teach you how to train, work with your body, and be overall more body aware. godspeed
Posted in the wrong thread like a jong but here is some further breathing information for anyone who is interested in exploring all possibilities of how to recover and create energy flow.https://chatgpt.com/share/6876fa33-1...0-b02da3ff0433
woo woo intersects chat gpt the future is weird
Sorry to interrupt the ACL chatter I finally got tired of my repaired ACL and just had a whole new joint put in then I got laid off so the GF and I are going to bring my new knee out west for a couple months this winter.
Where’s a good locale to look at renting a place for a couple months between SLC and Ogden? Sugarhouse is the only neighborhood I’m familiar with as being a cool spot, have some friends that used to live in Holladay and stayed with them many moons ago but don’t really remember what it was like other than it’s proximity to skiing.
Budget is probably $3k month max for a furnished place.
The girl works remote and if we can swing it I may just dust off my dirtbag capabilities, pick up a part time job, or not.

Where would you ski? WOuld you do backcountry? Sounds like you have an Ikon pass so your home resort would be Solitude? If so I wouldn't live between SLC and Ogden, which is mostly Mormon and has very very few good restaurants. If you do BC you will probably be up LCC or BCC most days so be at the base of them. If you have other interests besides skiing there's lots of good pockets to live in and around SLC, but the further south you get, or just go west of i15, it becomes interchangeable gross strip malls and endless suburbs. Holliday has a small lil' downtown that would be nice to be near and easy to get to the canyons.
I'd personally stay as close to the mouth of the canyon you're planning to ski the most. So cottonwood heights or sandy for big and little cottonwoods.
If you're planning ski an Ogden Valley ski resort, somewhere close to Ogden Canyon like the east bench of Ogden or Layton. Though you may be able to find a rental in your price range in the Ogden Valley proper in your price range, those towns/cities would be Huntsville, Eden, Liberty. There's also mountain green which is also very close to snowbasin.
These recs are if skiing is your top priority as they're all the suburbs with less dining options/nightlife than areas like downtown slc, sugar house, Ogden, etc....
We’d most likely be ikonic and potentially have a season pass at Brighton via severance from current job. So Solitude, we have BC gear but I imagine would mostly be lift riders this winter.
Skiing would be the priority so night life not so much although some decent dining options we’d use. Happy to go into SLC if a good show comes to town.

There may be some seasonal rentals in BCC. I have a buddy who lived in a rental in Silver Fork for years.
Cottonwood Heights is the closest if you don’t want to live in the canyon.
Protip: Live as near as realistically possible to where you want to ski, and just drive the extra 10-15 minutes to a restaurant when you want an evening out. It's way easier to get around the valley at dinner time than it is to get up the canyon the AM on a powder day. If you foresee being in Big mostly, I'd imagine being able to find a reasonably priced seasonal rental somewhere close to Ft Union/Bengal/Wastach ... but if you can score something affordable in the canyon, it might be worthwhile, especially when viewed thru the lens of "driving down the canyon at 7pm vs driving up it at 7am". Also, for sure LMK once you are in town!!!
My buddy has a place in Bengal by Smith's rents 2br basement and 3br main floor. I will check. Almost guaranteed it's taken but you never know
There has to be a strategy in play for coming at BCC in the correct direction based on where you live. I know coming from the north to BCC is NOT it. For example good living would be right behind Alpha Coffee for easy nudging into the front of The Uphill Snake Line. I think. Or be best buds and neighbors with Post Malone, and cruise into Mine Shaft Road? Did they get around to blocking that access?
Yes, mineshaft is closed to uphill big access on powder days and weekend mornings.
IMO ideal big access would be to live in the top of the world neighborhood (between big and little, east of Wasatch) and enter Wasatch by the Ferguson dog park. I don’t know if it’s done n cottonwood heights yet, but in similar neighborhoods in Sandy with good wasatch access there are police officers checking addresses on drivers liscenses, and making those that don’t live there go to the back of the line.
Man Im needy these days. Weve got some dental issues to work through. Anybody know a good HONEST SLC area dentist who wont try to lay on extra services? Trying to avoid a crown for a family member...
ACL update: hes improving way ahead of schedule apparently. PT is mostly trying to figure out how to keep him tamped down cause hes so unecumbered so early, and no matter the range of motion you still need the ligaments to heal and that takes the time it takes - but they said groomers might happen this year as soon as January. Hes stoked. Obviously, no jumps, cliffs or air. Hes thrilled to just be the camera guy for his posse since he though he would have nothing this season. Meanwhile, Im making a huge sticker to put on the front of all his skis that says "DO NOT REMOVE FROM GROUND".
We shall see. Long way to go. Thanks again for all the help advice, contacts and thoughts.
Suggest Dr Curtis at Alpenglow dental. Technically in sandy, located at creek rd and 1300.He is a straight shooter that has given good advice on more complex dental issues for my wife and I.
and glad to read on the kiddo's progress!
I go to salt lake dental clinic in Murray. Recommend by another mag. Dentist there is a skier and absolutely doesn’t push any extra bs. I had other dentists recommend certain procedures and this guy straight up told me they were just trying to make money. Very straight shooter.
All dentists are skiers
