Random Unthreadworthy Questions

Because it's driving me a little batty I'm trying to understand this weather -not climate- pattern, like what the jet stream is doing and el/la nino/a. ocean oscillation etc. as it affects medium- to longer term weather, say a week to a month. Basically I'm trying to figure out why this summer sucks so hard.

I know, climate change. But right now I'm more interested in the weather. I can't really find shit through NOAA, Windy, etc. etc. Is there a site that offers this type of analysis, either as predictions and analysis or even in forum format?

Raytheon bought the weather channel
Weather channel bought underground weather, which used to be the best. Now it sucks.

My take is weather warfare. As the planet is getting more fucked, the sociopathic superpowers are steering jet streams and seeding clouds. Tinfoil? Perhaps. But I’m old enough to remember different.
And weather control is easy with modern science.

Curling's so boring, though. How about hockey? We could put up a thousand-story goalie robot to block them. Maybe a couple of defensemen robots too.

Do a search for a local weather blog. There's one in Boulder (bouldercast.com) that does a lot of explaining of the how and why of local weather phenomena.

i have never curled but i stumbled upon a community match while wandering the streets of zermatt some years ago and it looked like them folks were having a fucking blast.

I do curls when I go to the gym. I'm with otzi, I certainly wouldn't care to watch anyone doing them.

Thanks for the excellent suggestion, I found exactly what I was looking for in a heartbeat just by adding the word "blog" to my search.

Assume you were home shopping and came across a 50s house with an underground oil tank that was never officially decomissioned. Would you consider making an offer on the house?

In a normal market, that's what I would do; in this market, apparently contingencies in your offer are a guarantee you won't win. Of course, having the "winning" offer and having to shell out for a huge remediation job would be the worst outcome. I admit I've been slightly swayed by a few friends who had to do this and had no leaking - "it wasn't a big deal", but yeah, it's a pig in a poke and a really bad outcome, while unlikely, would be a huge problem.

As a point of reference the my wife’s grandparents had one at their house when they passed away. Took two years to jump through all the hoops and regulations before the tank was removed, ground deemed clean, and they were able to sell. Pretty much ate up the entire estate with the removal, disposal, and carrying costs before it could be sold.

House was all that was left of the estate. Rest of the cash went into permits, lawyers, and removal costs along with taxes and heating costs. I would not assume that you can buy that house and only spend 5-10k for cleanup. Certainly not in VT with the state requirements and oversight.

Good lord. Must have been a helluva leak. I bought some property in VT back in 2002 and had to pull and clean up after an oil tank at a cost around $7500. Took 3 months total.

I learned later, that in VT you just hire the local excavator, usually someone named Clem and his brother Cliff, to pull the tank. Pay them a bit extra in cash, tell them to put it out in the field behind the barn, and let the grass grow around it.

If you sell or anyone asks, it's an old sap tank.

When I was young I worked for a demo/excavation guy for a summer, and we removed a bunch of them. Look down the filler, and if you see oil, you might have dodged a bullet. But if it's a thin film of oil floating on water, you probably didn't. If it's bone dry, now you know why the veggies from your garden taste like petroleum.

Thanks guys, I'll tell our RE agent to give up on the "buried oil tank? no big deal!" song and dance, and maybe find a new agent. The house is in WA, and she's been making it sound like the attitude there towards buried oil tanks is in the Clem/Cliff zone, but I don't buy it.

I can’t imagine that a buried oil tank would not raise any concerns or at least be brushed aside casually.

Clem may say otherwise though.

It might cost $7500-$750k to remove and cleanup. No big deal!
