DECISION TO LEAVE
The latest film from Park Chan-wook (who is perhaps best known for Oldboy) is a slick neon noir with a heavy Hitchcockian slant. Teeming with gullible protagonists, sly femme fatales, slick camera work, and interesting flashbacks, it can at times be confusing (perhaps due to some lost-in-translation subtitle glitches?), but it is always entertaining and engaging.

DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES
This film is silly and fun. It is the grand epitome of a popcorn blockbuster: simple story, quick pacing, jovial and likeable characters portrayed by decent actors, and solid action.
Hugh Grant, Justice Smith, and Rege-Jean Page steal the show.
My only real complaint is that there is a high profile cameo that is kind of weak and brings nothing to the story other than stilted celebrity humor. That and it needed more owlbear…

This is an interesting slow burn containment thriller with subtle psychological elements.
I will admit that after 35-minutes I began to wonder how it would keep my attention for another hour-and-10 minutes, but it gradually sucked me in and held my attention for the duration.
It has some interesting subtextual commentary on art and survival, as well as the human condition.
Willem Dafoe gives a wonderfully understated performance that touches upon artistic creativity, the slow descent into madness, loneliness, and survival instincts.
The film is quiet, yet deceptively unnerving.
Wife and I rented 1923 on Prime and really liked it. Now we've rented 1883 and so far that seems really good too.
Funny thing is, I absolutely detest Yellowstone. It's cheesy, overwrought, unrealistic, soap operish, basically everything these other two shows aren't. Every character is unlikable and annoying AF. Too bad they couldn't have made a decent series set in modern times that lived up to the quality of the prequels.
Covenant is out. Predictable but entertaining.

We enjoyed the first couple of episodes of Gen V. It's pretty much "The Boys" in a college setting.

This was way more entertaining and over-the-top splatterific than I expected it to be. Then again it has Nic Cage going full Bela Lugosi overdrive, so I shouldn’t have been that surprised.
I actually put off seeing it because of Awkwafina, who I find to be annoying as hell. Yet she was actually okay here. Nicholas Hoult goes full-bore 1990’s era Hugh Grant, albeit with some Matrix-styled wire-fu ass-kicking insanity. Speaking of which, the action sequences are pretty damn bueno.
This is definitely an engaging diversion.

I skipped this when it had a limited run in the theaters because the trailer was kind of wack, imho.
Well, they pulled a fast one as the trailer was pure bait-and-switch, with the film being something else entirely.
This is a gritty neon western filled with some great character actors, some familiar faces, and a leading lady who is beyond badass.
There is also an insane turn from Toby Huss, who, as the saying goes. steals the show.

Part road trip drama, part gang infested drama, part chase thriller, part Romeo/Juliet doomed love story, this film follows some familiar tropes of those genres, but is crisply paced, fantastically acted, and nicely filmed.

MY YOUNG AUNTIE
Directed by the legendary Lau Kar-Leung, this film is a beguiling pastiche of romcom, slapstick, beach party/college raunch, and of course martial arts mayhem. Centered around a female protagonist who puts men in their places with fists of fury, it’s strength lies in the well choreographed fight sequences and the charisma of its lead actors; while Kara Hui may be the titular character, Hsiao Ho practically steals the show with his infectious grin and high flying fisticuffs.
Oh yeah, it features a low-key cameo from the “master killer” himself, Gordon Liu (not terribly surprising given that Lau Kar-Leung had directed Liu in the seminal The 36th Chamber of Shaolin a few years earlier).
Watched most of The Terminal List now while being sick. Am I fever dreaming or is this some sort of wetdream metaphor about retribution for making spec ops guys get the CoVID vaccine?
EK THA TIGER
Okay, full-disclosure: this is not a great film by any stretch, but it is an enjoyable and engaging time waster.
It’s a secret agent romance action comedy borrowing heavily from both the James Bond and M:I franchises and containing a pretty cliche ridden storyline.
Yet both the opening and third act action set pieces are pretty solid (except for a few really shoddy blue screen moments here and there).
This is the first film in an ongoing interconnected series known as the YRF Spy Universe, so they’re taking a page from the Marvel cinematic blueprint, as well.
Oh, and there are totally elaborate and incongruous dance numbers—I learned they are called “item numbers”—sprinkled throughout the film for no reason whatsoever (a wacky and wonderful practice in almost every Indian film I have seen to date).
Has anyone watched Deadloch? Wife and I watched the first two episodes and I'm not quite sure whether to keep at it. So far its has its funny moments, but it's a bit on the frenetic side.
That's a great series - IIRC it got more enjoyable the further in you got. Frenetic is a pretty good description, though. :DQuote:

Okay, so I am cutting this film a bit of slack due to exotic bias, but despite it’s dopey dialogue, over-the-top jingoism, and borrowing heavily from John Woo’s American oeuvre (specifically Face/Off and M:I2), along with the Bond entry Die Another Day, as well as Hong Kong martial arts films of the 1990s, this film is a hoot. It also feels like a throwback to the cheesy Arnold/Sly/JCVD films of my youth.
The action sequences, specifically the fight scenes, are nicely choreographed and slickly paced. Oh, and the requisite item number is pretty kinetic; I am still in awe at how Bollywood production just stick an elaborate song-and-dance video smack dab in the middle of an action film. It’s bonkers.
There's only one item number??!!?? Bollywood isn't what it used to be.
I recently tried to watch Jawaan - while trying very hard to be a scathing criticism of several elements of current Indian society, the silliness was too much for me - bailed at the the ladies prison item number.

It has the most insanely eye catching and over-the-top item number I’ve seen to date (granted my experience with this genre is pretty limited; I have seen roughly 8 films, one of which was a Tollywood production).
After watching this flick, which totally apes the M:I films, all I can think about is how cool it would be if Tom Cruise broke out in dance in the middle of one of his Ethan Hunt escapades…
