Depends where your house is and what it’s worth. If it’s worth $1m + I’d say so it is reasonable.

Prop 13 is one of the worst property tax laws in history. Thanks to it, the LA Country club pays $50k in taxes on land worth billions, fucking over everyone else. It significantly favors old money over the poor and anyone trying to buy for the first time. There are many more losers from prop 13 than winners.

Well, it's a dead end so we get plowed when they get to it, it hasn't been repaved for 40 years and there's a monster pothole in front of my driveway, the closest streetlight or sidewalk is a mile and a half away, we pay a special $100/yr add-on for garbage pickup, as mentioned no gas/water/sewer. IMO the schools suck but I guess if you're ok with nepotism, misogyny and teachers dating then marrying students they're ok. We don't have a dump or recycling center so if it doesn't fit in a garbage can we either get a dumpster or transport it out of the county ourselves. Good luck getting rid of old paint cans. On the upside if you have an armed home invasion they will actually arrest and imprison the perp as opposed to towns just south of me where they slap them on the wrists and send 'em on their way.

Due to the covid real estate boost the town was reassessed and our value apparently jumped about 50% so they added about $5k to our tab over three years. It was already too high but now it's unsustainable.

Yeah.....BTDT when we had the heat dome 2 years ago. Have yet to hit triple digits this year though they are predicting it this weekend.

Local weather people have been moaning and groaning about the heat. I'm all "meh." After that damn heat dome I'm unfazed by anything under 100.

$10,000 is 1% of the value on a $1m house. That goes to fire fighters, police, schools, roads, trash, public transportation and almost everything else done by the local government. 1% is the national average.

Rolled into Vegas on our way to Santa Barbara and truck showed 118 as the high. Going to get up early so we can get past Baker before the broilers kick on. Supposed to hit 121 there tomorrow.

Hit 106 today. I don’t want to go any higher. After a really cool spring and summer it feels way worse to be this hot.

The Forest Service and County have closed a number of backcountry trails because of the heat wave. Carrizo Gorge where the biker died is private railway property that is already closed to public entry. Unfortunately it's become a destination hike/ride and people won't stay away even when conditions are extreme.

We hit 97F down here yesterday. House stayed cool enough to avoid A/C for one more day...

I worked up a sweat walking the dogs....at 6am. Overnight low was like 79. To me, these are the worst days of summer, no overnight cool off. When it cools down overnight I can handle some heat. When you wake up early to open the door and it feels like a blast furnace, fuck that shit.

My ac is set to 75.

If my house hit 80, my upstairs bedroom would be 88 (big west facing windows) and never cool down enough.

Our A/C is off all the time - only time it comes on is when I decide it's time, and even then it's usually only for a couple hours in the late afternoon.

I don't *think* we used it at all last summer...

I never measure the temp in the bedrooms upstairs - but I'd wager it gets in the mid-80's when it's 80F on the main floor.

Maybe next year the SAR team decides they don't want to go out in high avy conditions, so they close the bc on all moderate and above days. Does that sound reasonable to you?

You can't protect the public from themselves all the time. Closing land in the name of protecting those who might "have" to rescue someone is lazy thinking at best.

We shut all the windows generally around 8am and drop the shades... it's kinda like living/working in a cave during the day. I wish that we'd gotten blackout shades for the west side of the house, as that's where the majority of the windows are.

It's a challenge with a lot of the housing stock around here. Old 1800s multi-story houses with wrap around porches, hippie passive solar houses, and some of the newest houses that wee designed this way are best. My 1978 house sucks. I want a partially earth bermed passive solar house like a friend of my dad made in the late 70s. A few modern tweaks and it would be awesome. We do the open windows at night when we can, however it's so fucking humid most of the time that I need the AC to dry the place out. The basement has a massive dehumidifier, I need some for upstairs for when I need drying but not necessarily cooling.

They aren't closing these trails because they "might" have to rescue someone, they're closing them because rescues always happen heatwaves because people won't stay away, and some of those turn into recoveries. Same thing happens every heat wave and it's become a huge problem and an unnecessary drain on resources. These are hikes where you drop down into a steep canyon to a waterfall, then have to climb back out under full sun when it is much hotter. Even people who come prepared can get into trouble.


This is Three Sisters Falls, one of the trails that is closed until the heat wave is over. Second pic is the masses descending on the falls just as it's getting hot out. It's like this every weekend of the year when the trail is open.
