I went back to where I did well yesterday, put on the same nymph, and it wasn't long before I started catching fish, ten of 'em today. I caught more whitefish than trout, but the whitefish were all bigger than any of the trout, all thirteen inches or more.

It was actually some of the hotter fishing of the season, I caught eight in an hour and a half, lost about as many during that time, and was getting a bite on almost every cast for a while, until one of them stole my CopperJohn. I even caught a cutthroat, which have been sparse in recent weeks.

It's supposed to get warmer tomorrow, so I'll try to get out a bit earlier tomorrow probably. I didn't leave the house until 2pm today.
I did not get out of the house earlier today, but I did get out of the house, and started fishing around 2:45pm, which has been the time of the day when I've seen fish rising the past couple days. Though the weather report insisted that it would be partly sunny this afternoon, it was decidedly not sunny:

I started off by throwing a worminator, trailed by a #12 green Copper John, under a bubble, and pretty quickly I caught a couple whitefish. However, I saw the fish rising, and having not got a bite on the subsurface rig, for longer than I could bear while watching the fish feed on the surface, I tried a couple double dry rigs, and got on a violent strike on my black and purple chubby, by an 11 incher who thought he was bigger.

Then they stopped rising, so I hung a purple flashback prince nymph off the chubby, and on the first cast the chubby winked out of sight a second after hitting the water, so I had no slack, and the hook set hard into an immovable mass that insistently tried to tow me off across the river. It took a while, but eventually I got it in the net, the heaviest trout I've caught to date, and the biggest rainbow I've caught by an inch as well (a full 18").

Then the sun broke through the clouds, and I shouted "ALLELUIA" and gave thanks that God could make such a bumbling wretch as me catch such a big, thick, beautiful fish as that.

The sun was out for about an hour, I didn't catch any more fish, but the joy over catching another big one kept me floating all the way home.

Today the whitefish bite was strong. I caught nine of 'em, as well as four small trout. This one was 16", my biggest yet.

At one point I lost four good sized fish in a row, before finally landing a smaller whitefish. At that point I noticed that the tip of the hook was broken off, I suppose I should have checked it after losing the first one, sigh.
It was good to get back out on the home waters. Fishing was a little slow but was awesome to see and hang with Schwerty and Kokomas. Managed to get into a few and stay semi dry

The river (Lower Bitterroot) was up about eight inches, and murkier than Thursday, when I was last there. The fishing was slower, but I couldn't possibly complain about the results. It was the day of the worm.

I have a friend who's father was a serious fly fisherman (published a book on fishing the South Platte a few decades back). His health is declining and he can't really take care of himself, let alonge fish. They are planning to sell off his gear to help pay for some of his medical expenses. Some of it is has value (he has about 500 fly boxes and a bunch of USA made Pflueger Medalist reels) and some of it isn't worth much (old Fenwick rods). She is looking for advice on how to sell. Thoughts?

Selling local through classifieds might work. Depending on what location they're at. Here in Utah, folks comb through KSL classifieds for used stuff. Might be easier than trying to package and ship especially fly rods.
Older glass rods have a kind of following and some carry fair value. Older Pfluerger reels might be tougher to sell. Some info here:

I'd probably toss them on eBay. Still...big hassle to have to package and ship stuff especially rods. But, big audience and best chance for highest price especially for anything someone finds as collectible. Selling with a local pick up much easier.

On Monday I went to the river, and it had swollen and clouded up (the level risen a foot in two days), and I got nary a bite, so I let it rest yesterday. Today was great fishing weather (partly sunny), the water had cleared considerably, and since I repaired the leak in my hip boots, I was raring and ready to go. I was not in so much of a hurry though, that I neglected to have a couple lengthy conversations with other fishermen I met near the boat ramp, nor did I fail to notice the beauty of the day.

Because of the semi sunny light, chose a rainbow warrior nymph to trail the red BH worminator which served me well on Sunday. The nymph produced a couple fish before I reached the confluence which I like to fish. A whitefish, and this little cutbow.

After losing my first rig, I tied on a big rubberlegs trailed by another rainbow warrior, surprisingly, I caught the majority of my white fish on the size 10 rubberlegs, which looked funny since it barely fit in their tiny mouths. I lost a big whitefish after winching him close against the current, but I got this one on the Pat's.

While often big bait gets big fish, the big one of the day came on the size 16 rainbow warrior, I think it was thicker than the one on Sunday, but the same length. The big fish have been hungry lately, and I couldn't be any more pleased.
