Why don't you leave the tools hidden in the woods? I always did that. I agree about how good the feeling of riding trails you built feels. I started building the year after I got my first mtb and continued for 10 years. Nice to tweek corners and features along the way to get it to ride how you want it to. For every hour spent building there was the 2-3 spent route finding and linking features that I wanted to include. Having grown up in the country on a dairy farm I also just loved being in the forest having spent thousands of hours hiking and hunting as a youth.
But alas I tired of an insultive writer, baby riders destroying tech features and an apathetic and rude lbs and walked away in 03. Unfortunately the loss of the building took away the joy of riding and I pretty much stopped in a year. Returning to Sport Bike riding definately filled the void and I didn't really miss it, power and speed can sure fill a hole. I now ride quite a bit as I wanted to stay in shape for skiing and have never really enjoyed hiking.
