The finest bourbon I have tasted. Yet.

I broke open my bottle of Barterhouse on the 4th and I have to say I was disappointed at my first go around with this stuff. Like I've said before , I'm no expert taster, but the taste to me was very dark-fruit and raisin-y, tannins, but not nearly as much wood as I'd think for a 20yr. Overall, I found the flavor kind of thin, imbalanced, and it left a bit of an "off" medicinal (or spicy?) flavor in my mouth. I drank it neat, so maybe a little water wold have helped? To me the whole thing tasted like they were maybe working hard to make these barrels good...and they ended up with something drinkable with a great story...but not worth the coin in my book. Gonna let it sit for a while and then see if it changes. Based on this I passed on a bottle of Rhetoric at the store last week and grabbed some Weller 12 instead, which was reliably delicious. The 4Roses SB LE continues to be fantastic as well, as does the Booker's 25th...gonna be sad when that's all gone.

I went through something pretty much just like that with an expensive bottle of Elijah Craig 21 yo. I waited, watered, all that and it just left a bad taste no matter what. So I took it into my LLS and asked them if maybe the bottle had gone bad or something like that. Their opinion was that bourbon left over 15 years in the barrel can become over-oaked and often isn't worth it. That led to a discussion about Pappy Van Winkle 20 and 23 yo (I've tasted the 20 and thought it was pretty great), but bottom line that bottle of Elijah Craig sucked.

Interesting. I've only tasted a couple bourbons over 15yrs (pappy 20, 2013 4R SmB LE) and they were divine. I'm hoping to score an Elijah Craig 23yr this fall...hopefully with better results than you had. The rest of my sipping collection probably all sit between 10-15 years, and I love them all.

Anyone on here tried the Rhetoric? It also seems to be getting mixed reviews, and at $10 more than Barterhouse I think I am glad I passed on it...but curiosity always nags.

Yes, it's quite good! I liked the rye better than the bourbon

The world's greatest liquor store just got a little bit better on two fronts.

1) They recently opened their own on-site bourbon distillery, New Riff which is gorgeous and has just released their first offering, an 8 year old bourbon with a fair amount of rye, OKI Straight Bourbon. The newest stop on the KY Bourbon Trail.

2) They have opened the Liquor Library; a fantastic spot where you can buy samples of hard to find Kentucky bourbons, orphan barrels, and just about any other distilled spirit. On a recent swing through I snagged an orphan Rhetoric and a Four Roses SB OBSF that is delicious.

I read on straight bourbon (so take that what's its worth) that's it has recently come back and is likely an MGP product. Can't imagine a distillery just popped up and got distribution through Costco that quickly. Doesn't mean it is a bad product. MGP makes some good bourbon and some great rye.

Agreed - I've had a lot of really great bourbon and rye that was sourced from MGP. I can't see being a snob about that - taste über alles.

Totally agree with Boston Mills Skier's assessment of Cleveland's Whiskey. Very Very Surprisingly Decent
Picked up a bottle in of all places rural New Hampshire while on holiday there
( Peterborough - Jaffrey Liquor Store )

Cleveland Bourbon (very surprisingly decent, some patent-pending pressurized process involving a Kentucky mash bill and Kentucky charred new oak spits)

Nice! Glad to see someone else got to taste it and give an opinion. I was sure that it was strictly available in NE OH, cool to see they're getting distributed.

Definitely worth a taste if anyone runs across it.

I'm still working on a bottle of Four Roses OBSK. This is serious stuff. You can really taste the rye. It has a fairly carmelly taste up front. A little branch water is advised because it is 114 proof. If you find yourself near Davidson's in Highlands ranch jump on a bottle of this stuff. They also have OBSQ which is supposed to be better and have a floral and minty taste.

Camped with a bottle of old grand dad 100 proof last weekend. Finest I've tasted? Nah. Damn drinkable? Absolutely. Recommended for a cheap sipper.

Huh, we get the old granddad 114 around these parts. My preferred mixing whiskey for sure!

We just got a barrel of Four Roses in this week. We went for the obsk recipe and left it at cask strength which turned it to be about 112 proof. Stuff is delicious with a surprisingly delicate finish for something at that proof.

Oh the 114 is fantastic as well. I get very different flavors from the 100 though. Doesn't just taste like a watered down version. However, if I'm not mixing with rittenhouse, it's probably ogd114.

That Four Roses OBSKwas amazing! I may swing by for another.

You can probably buy that for $10 a bottle in Habana. Canada didn't give me any grief for bringing a case of habana club 7 yr in my luggage. That was maybe $6 US.

Re: OGD...we use to snatch that shit out of my parent's liquor cabinet back in HS. Apparently it was Joe Pa's and HSTs drink of choice. Old Crow too...vile shit for a 16 yr old.

Is your whiskey from Indiana? Seems as though some popular whiskeys are all coming from the same place.

Good point. However, Colorado gold has been around for years, but didn't really see much action in the market. They were recently sold, and rebranded with the new label (which is actually wood). The whisky is supposed to be completely different than the original, which I never tasted. But it could very well be an MGP product, either way it's pretty good. I think the bourbon at $60 is a bit much for what you get, but the rye is much more affordable and very tasty!

I ended up on a 13 hour bourbon/whiskey bender Tuesday. Took down large quantities of bookers, bakers, knob creek single, basil Hayden's, whistle pig, boss hog whistle pig, pappy van winkle 23, 20 & 15, crown Royal and bunch of other stuff I'd never heard of. The TSA person asked me if I had slept the night before. I was proud to tell them that I got 90 minutes. I think I was highly flammable when I boarded the plane. The day started with a Jim Beam distiller bringing a briefcase of their rarest bourbons to a meeting and wrapping it up in a backroom jazz club late night.

In all honesty I have no idea what was good or bad. Think my taste buds were shot in the first hour after a couple 130 proof bookers.
