any downsides to doing that XXX-er? does it change the flex or anything weird like that?
No idea maybe some one who has ground out the square peg can comment?
I think the latchs are so you can loosen all the buckles and not spend time to re-thread them on the ladders which is especialy good for that 1 top buckle system cuz you spend time either way futzing with those buckles,
it would be real easy to drill the head off the pivot and remove whichever latches bug you
I will pull tongues for a 2hr+ hike but for a 1hr yoyo not usually
those latches that snap down over the ladders are just some kind of plastic so I am suprised they haven't broken
Yeah, the latches make good sense, if you dont have to undo the buckle (like to get the tongues in and out). I took them off the middle buckle for that reason
I was just looking at my boots some more, maybe you can slide the tongues in without undoing the second buckle i you grind that square peg thing off... Did I read somewhere that LeeLau did that?
So I've got five days on my Vulcans and every time I use them I get this black crap dripping down the back of the boot. Looks like the metal lean lock part is rubbing against the carbon and creating carbon dust, which then mixed with snow makes this black carbon crap. Dynafit is sending my new lean lock inserts to see if that solves anything. Anybody else had this?
yeah they do that. nothing to worry about.
OK cool. Thanks. I'm gonna stick some gorilla tape in key areas and see if that stops it. Wonder if this is one of the reasons they went to fiberglass cuff.
I just cut the tongue 'peg' off with a Stanley knife, it makes getting the tongue in easier but you still have to undo buckles. I got rid of my lower buckle as the only thing it does is make the tongue harder to insert. Doesn't affect ski performance imo.
Currently trying to source some ratchet type straps to make it a bit quicker.
LOVE the boots, fit, flex etc but the tongues piss me right off
Does anyone else ditch the tongues for both downhill and uphill? That is what I ended up doing, through I use the tongues with my TLT6. Plenty stiff enough for me in any terrain I end up in, though at I am a relative meadow skipper by the standards of these parts.
I took off the lowest buckle and cut off the tongue locating peg. Changing out is much better. Best of all though, Vulcans are stiff enough for me to tour completely without the tongue. I only use the tongue for resort days. I removed the power strap and bump stops as well, and use a modified intuition powerwrap; without mods and with the tongue in, the boot was incredibly harsh, even for me at 195. They are totally perfect now, greatest boot ever made, if it fits. Blows my old Mercs away. It's sad that dynafit neutered them this year.
Don't really understand why people say the vulcan is too stiff. I tried them once without the tongues and didn't like it and I'm 175. Amazing boot though, I didn't even have to cook the liners
This^^ there are actualy a lot of things you can do to mess with stiffness, for the down I found the mercury too soft without tongue but ski-able, the vulcan is ok without tongue but i like it better with the tongue
I guess Dynafit figured the couldn't keep selling the same old product?
anyone try bending the tongue to make it more upright? thoughts?
I've switched to the more upright lean angle and I much prefer it. but it feels like the tongue doesn't match.
..or any thoughts on how to generally get the boot even more upright in any way?
Haven't run through the entire thread but just wondering if anyone has comments regarding new and 'improved' vulcan vs. old vulcan a/b comparison for flex and feel?
It would be >1000 bucks guido, if you are lookin again I would scope out a slightly used vulcan for 2-300$, if its got removable stops & removable tongue you could phluff around with a boot you already know where to punch for WAY cheaper
Not lookin' Al, just curious for curiosity's sake...have't seen much feedback on the 'new' ones. Found my happy place with the maestrale's; thought they skied like shit with stock liners but after throwing the intuition luxuries in and fixing the cuff slop with the ghettoworks high tech mod, good synergy. I really like the flex profile/stance angles along with the fit after punching 10mm in forefoot. They walk as well as and ski 'feel' much better than the mercuries even though less stiff. When mango shit's the bed, likely bump up to the RS.
Ha - It's the other way around, actually. Race boots are more upright, and apparently Dynafit hasn't caught on yet. Same result though.
So for reference I bought a pair of the Salomon Mtn Lab 120's this year. They feel slightly more upright, or maybe it's because they have less ramp angle (?), but either way I'm not a fan. They're dead feeling, and ski for shit compared to the Vulcan. They also have less cuff angle/cant to them (more upright laterally) and as a result make me feel like I'm constantly on my outside edges. I bought them because the Vulcans just don't fit (huge blisters on multi-day tours), but now I have incentive to try and make them work again. Hello heat gun.
Are you sure you got the insert on the spoiler in the more upright positon? IMO the Vulcan are fairly upright, also with a Tech binding you can put a shim under the toe
Is the new Vulcan really a green Mercury or not? XXXer: have you actually skied the new one, or just looked at it and decided that it's a Mercury?
Yup. Im sure it's in the more upright. My other boots are dalbello Lupo which is much more upright according to spec, and I prefer that aspect of that boot.
Can't do shims because I am also partially trying to deal with poor ankle dorsiflexion from injuries. Also messing with the ramp angle throws off a bunch of other stuff.
Regardless, the tongue has an angle that has to work for the more-forward lean setting, so it obviously doesn't also match the more-upright setting. Just wondering about bending it to match. I figure a few of us could benefit from this working.
I have my insert in the more upright orientation, but used a heat gun to actually add more bend to the tongue in an attempt to make the flex more progressive. The result is that when you put the tongue in the carbon cuff is way stronger than the tongue and it pulls the tongue back to less of a bend. My guess is that straightening the tongue would have a similar effect in that once you buckle the boot the cuff dictates the stance. In other words I doubt straightening the tongue would make it ski more upright.
Personally I'm not trying to use the tongue to get more upright, just wondering about bending it to match the spoiler upright angle so the flex support engages properly and, ideally, more progressive.
Second part was wondering about options to make the boot even more upright at the cuff. Two separate things.
I spose you could fuck with leaving out stops & using a different tongue off of a cabrio boot or sft but progressive & vulcan R probably 2 words that should not be used together
I was thinkin about one of those instaprint tongue shims or sft
it strikes me that a machinist type could easily fuck with making new metal fittings on either the shell or the spoiler so the boot is more upright
A few questions about Vulcans:
Comparing the uphill range of motion: do you use the internal Vulcan bump stops and/or do your bump stops limit forward range of motion?
In a perfect world the bump stops would only engage when the UltraLock is closed but with mine they limit forward motion when touring. This is mostly an issue on steep skin tracks and when breaking trail.
What's the consensus on the vestigial tongue nubbin? Did you cut it off? Does it serve any purpose other than as guide for inserting the tongue? Any downside to slicing it off?
I run without the stops, they made them too stiff for me, surprisingly. Maybe I should try them again, I was straight out of mercs at the time.
I definitely took off the tongue nubbin, no downsides that I can tell. I also took of the toe buckle, tongue swaps are cake. With an intuition and those changes they are 1400 grams each and plenty of boot without tongues on narrower touring sticks, for me anyway. I'll miss em when they wear out...
How is the flex of a Vulcan without tongue and without flex stops, versus the flex of a Mercury with the built in flex stops, with and without tongue ? Anyone know ?
I like stiff and so I tried once but only skied mercury or vulcan with the tongues & stops
but that swiss guy has both boots and has geeked out on this^^ adnausem
in fact I am wondering why he hasn't weighed in
Anybody have a recommendation for a good beefy binding that’s compatible with the 1st gen Vulcan? Might be riding some lifts this year so Im looking for something a little more stout to replace dynafits on a pair of Bibby pros. Haven’t used anything but dynafits for about 10 years so I’m out of the loop.
