Running without music is anything but boring. You should start doing your training runs without it, it's so much better, trust me. You can just let your mind wander or your eyes wander. Appreciate being free and disconnected or go through things on your mind one at a time. At the race there will be plenty of people around and you can focus on the adrenaline or if there are enough people that someone is near you running just chat with them. Talk about whatever, make a friend, it will make the race go by so much faster and maybe you learn something or maybe you really do make a new friend.

I used to worry about running without music but when I started running a lot this late spring I ran without and I've never turned back. If you ever feel the need for music just sing it in your head or humm the tune. Whenever I'm really struggling I usually just start singing "I feel good dunuhnuhnunhunh, like I knew that I would know....." over and over in my head until I feel better or finish. It usually works.

It was a bitch of a course but not the hardest I've done, but none the less I can certainly see way AC 100 is on the hundred mile classics. Like Wasatch the last 25 miles are the hardest miles of the race.

Yesterday I ran my first ever marathon. A trail event over sand dunes and cliffs. I paced myself ok, and finished in the top half of the field of 80 runners with a time of 5 hours 15 minutes. The winner came in at just under 5 hours, so I don't feel too bad.

I was meant to be doing two further trail races today and tomorrow - as part of the same event. I withdrew last night. No excuses, no injury - the run hurt more than I have ever known in my time running though. I simply felt that doing three marathons over tough ground when the longest run I have ever done before is 18 miles is perhaps tearing the arse out of things a bit.

The problem is, I have been getting sponsorship - not a massive amount of money, and certainly the sort of pledges that people would give for one marathon, let alone three, but I still have pledges none the less. In taking part yesterday - and having the confirmation that my wife is twelve weeks pregnant which will clash with three marathons early next year, I've decided to re-evaluate the charity event commitment. Has anyone ever done this, how is it best handled? (I was thinking of being honest and admitting to being naive and taking on too much at the first attempt.)

I loved yesterday - and I'm already looking forward to the next run. I just feel a bit sad that my first marathon is tainted with an element of failure with only myself to blame.

I am going to enter the Hardrock lottery next year, though with the lottery system the chances seem slim of getting in.

Somehow that article always stuck with me, Hardrock sounded so ridiculous, so the fact that I even can enter the lottery now is amazing. We'll see what happens.

Herbs, don't worry about it, finishing a marathon in the top half of the field and racing that distance over horrendous terrain. Is a pretty fucking excellent achievement.

The Hardrock is the ultimate 100 mile mountain run. I've done 11 of them, 2 Wasatch, 2 Leadville, Western States, Angeles Crest and even the Ultra Tour Du Mont Blanc 163K. Of them the UTMB is the hardest I've done (40:50) and very Hardrock like but without the altitude. I have a running friend from France that has done both including the Hardrock three times and he says there is no comparison, the Hardrock is more epic than them all.
I have but in for the lottery twice and have been denied but have paced there three times and I highly recommend pacing crewing for someone before your attempt. If you do put in for the lottery good luck mate!

yeah.. i drove north out of durango through silverton & ouray, eventually arriving in denver. one of the most amazing drives i've ever taken.. i'd love to go back, take some time, and explore.

life & circumstance forced 4 (!) days off this week after a 12.4 run Monday night... am feeling the stress of not being prepared for the race in three weeks! Can still feel muscles in my legs tho'... so I guess I haven't completely atrophied this week...:rolleyes2

do I really need to taper for a half marathon? Circumstance is going to keep me from a long run this weekend... Thinking a nice 12 next... then who freaking knows...? The last two weeks are a mystery. When I ran it six years ago, my training went to shit the 3 weeks before... tho' I wasn't as prepared as this time... I am stressing.

Damn work! And Vanity! And all the things that keep you from doing what you know is good for your body & mind...

Let's put it this way...I never tapered for a marathon and my marathon PR was 2 weeks after a 50 miler.

Sleep is good. Stressing less is better. Do what you can do and blow off the rest. Be happy.

I've got a 10 mile hill race in 3 hours. It is pissing with rain, and my left achilles tendon is painful.

I don't really want to run but I gonna.

mine too. ice it as soon as your race is over. it seems to be helping me.. you definitely don't want it to develop into something worse.. AT injuries are very painful and take a long time to heal.

The 400mg 'brophen / magic smarties did the trick. There is no freezer in this facking gaff I rent :mad: so I'll go and buy a bag of frozen peas.

I resisted the urge to sit at home and eat pies, and went wading through mud, bogs and swollen rivers with 800 other idiots. The weather was too wild so they kept us off the mountain tops.

Did my first event since Leadville this morning, the Big Tesuque Run, a 12 mile trail race(6 out and back) starts at about 10K' and the turnaround is just over 12k'. It was mellow, ran it with some friends, started in the back and ended in the back, but it felt good to be back on the dirt.

The Tour Du Mont Blanc looks incredible. I'll probably enter the HR lottery and see what happens. If I don't get in I'll try to get up there and do some trailwork and maybe crew/pace for someone.

Wusses that are only running the NYC Marathon- how's it going lately? Ran at 4 am this AM b/c I was just to exhausted last night, which I feel good about. Very curious to see how this will go (1st timer). Last 20 miler is tomorrow- wishing it was the event!

So I just finished the Chicago today and besides being sore I'm extremely dissapointed, frustrated and a bit confused. In case no one caught the weather, it was in the mid 80s today in Chicago, not the ideal marathon weather.

So anyone started off great, I trained really hard and was running all my long runs even the 22 at just under an 8min pace, did tons of fartlek and sprint workouts mid weeks (prob ran 35-40mi/wk for 4.5mo). I tapered and held off, went into the marathon rested, hydrated, carb loaded and feeling strong.

I was doing well until about 15 and then i started getting cramps in my quads. I've never cramped running, ever. So I just kept going and fought through it kept pace but at 18/19 it started getting bad and then they both completely siezed. I couldn't bend my kneed I couldn't run, it wasn't a thing about pain, I physically couldn't. It was painful yes, but I could've dealt with that as I was earlier, I couldn't run. I got so mad so I started walking and kept trying to jog, big stride, little strides, didn't matter. Couldn't do it. So I ended up walking 19-24 about and then ran the last 2 and the last .75 sucked i was in a lot of cramp pain but I had to finish at good speed.

When I first started cramping I was like huh, then after another mile or so and i started gettin spasms and cramps in my calves I realized I was overhydrated (or so I think). Because it was so hot I wanted to be proactive about staying hydrated early and drank more gatorade (almost every mile) than I ever did in training. I've read that you can overhydrate and mess up the salt balance and cramp so it made sense. Does that sound right? Is that possible? I don't know what happened, I did everything right up and till the race.

Needless to say I finished 1/2hr later than my goal and am bumming hard. Really dissappointed in myself

Why the disappointment?

You finished a marathon in tough conditions. You sucked it up, ran through cramps for 7+ mile and most likely finished under 4 hours.
