Just used this thread to guide me through my first 2 mounts this past weekend. AWESOME. Saved me $140 ($70/mount in the Boston area) while getting me super stoked for the season.
Only surprise I had to deal with was the filing down of the screw hole volcanos. Once I figured that out, it was cake.

Somebody please help on the Gaurdian template. I don't have a jig or the bindings themselves. If anyone can check it and post the measurements, I'll update it

For ON3Ps and their carbon stringers (Vicik, specifically), will I want the 3.5 bit for mounting SollyFit plates?

The Guardian template is updated based on the image above. The old template was off by only a little.
Whoever checks, please carefully check the BSL location, because that isn't on the image above, so its still set where GregL measured it.

I was marking out my topsheets for a pair of Barons last night using the paper template and for some reason the spacing between the holes for the plate at the rear of the binding was off by a few mm lengthwise. I.e the holes for the rear of the plate on the template were too close to the holes at the front if that makes sense. I don't think it was an issue with print scaling since the width of the holes for the plate was spot on. The other 5 holes for the front seemed to line up perfectly perfect as well.
A few mm probably isn't the end of the world, but with inserts I think it would prevent the screws from sitting flush with the plate and the binding would probably bind when switching from ski to tour mode. With normal screws I think the screw would end op going in cockeyed at best, and they would probably still bind.
In the end I dug out a template that came with a pair of Dukes and all was good. I'm still wondering if anyone else has had this issue or did I just make a stupid fuckup that I'm somehow missing?
^^^ unless marker changed the design (doubtful) you did something wrong. more than 1000 people (seriously) have mounted duke/barons with this template.
What do you need for BSL measurement on the Guardian? I can take a picture of the jig tomorrow.
I find it easier to drill the toe and heal first two holes with the paper template, then use the binding to mark the other holes.

From the centre of the rear toe holes to the BSL markings are....
109mm to 265 BSL (small)
114mm to 275 BSL
119mm to 285 BSL

Printing & Scaling: Accuracy is very important and the first step to verify printed templates is to check their relative scale and see how the actual bindings sit on the template to visually see if the holes align.

Check to see if the template has any scale or a dimension you can check with a ruler. Often the output from a printer can be slightly off for a variety of reasons. Scaling and reprinting may be necessary multiple times until you get it just right. If you cannot adjust the printing scale with your operating system or printing software, you may need to incorporate the use of graphics software that allows you to resize images and PDFs as needed before printing.

In the example above, the original print was off (too big) by 1mm in 200mm, or 0.5%. Since we needed to decrease the size of the print, we scaled the image 99.5% (199mm/200mm) to get the accurate result. If we needed to increase the output the same 0.5%, then we would need to set the printing scale at 100.5% (200mm/199mm).
For many the 0.5% discrepancy may be just fine, but if there are several layout, drilling and mounting steps off by 0.5% each, it’s possible to be off by a couple millimeters. On the other hand, sometimes minute errors cancel each other out and you can end up with dead on results despite the relative inaccuracies and many bindings do have built in adjust-ability. Regardless, it is best to be as accurate (especially for AT tech bindings) as you can with each step while also realizing this is not heart surgery and that these tolerances may actually be tighter than some shops and their binding mount jigs.
Feeler, kinda: When I read about scaling issues, it brings up the idea I've been kicking around of leveraging my CAD software and wide format printer to offer a template printing service. With an 18" wide sheet a pair or two of one page templates by BSL could be printed. But then I can see all of the variables, time and expense and still more problems with little benefit. Is there a real need?
