Damn, that's fucking gnarly.
are those tracks in the bed surface frozen into the rain/slush layer?
He didn't want his mom knowing uncle griz was makin him ski the double black expert stuff:wink:
Personally I'd a been on the phone to mom but I need the bonus gnarpoints.
Was gonna head up yesterday and stomp on wind loaded cornices sitting on rain crusts over large repeatable slide paths, I'm no cagey avyy expert, but I'm pretty sure I know what that's gonna do:rolleyes2
So we headed up with birthday boy Powder Pondo, who mangeaged to find
a wind slab while skinning Sat and go for a short ride in white pine, damn kids:tongue: I missed this cause i was hanging out in the Greens basin gnar with the wife. Which skied great 4wiw.
Headed over to maybird for a nice shot pretty variable much better towards e facing aspect. N facing red&white pine tree shots variable but pleasent.
Observed no instablites and obserserved this fine wasatch wiggle go down cross canyon on tanners

Went and joined the crowds skiing the meadow chutes gnar. Talked to a few parties that got some whoomping on a SE aspect. Didn't see any excitement other then great snow and skiing. The SE aspects were definitely baking so we stuck to the NE aspects..
NE and S facing at 10k on the BCC/Millcreek ridgeline skied unbelievably well on Sat.
I approve of UT's take on dust-on-crust.

No instabilities noted, crust barely noticeable under about 10" of dense surfy pow. It's another story down lower and on scoured stuff.
The LCC "alpine" skied dangerously like water ice on Sunday. Makes for great pictures of the glaze but that's about it. Practice your self-arrest techniques...
It's supposed to get quite warm toward the end of the week, hopefully that will soften up the crust/ice layer where it's exposed so that it can get broken up a bit, at least in bounds. I would think this would improve the odds of future snow bonding to it. Perhaps it will even melt/break down in the backcountry too.
Not sure how I got talked into going to Hogum today. Morbid curiousity I suppose. Stay out of there unless you are from the East coast.

On a side note, the day got much better when I arrived home and found my Intuition liners arrived in the mail. :yourock::yourock::yourock: The days of swimming in marshmallow soft BD liners are over!

One could shave with that reflection.
A couple days last week after the rain.
Headed up Broads area yesterday. Variable conditions exist up high, but nice day out regardless.

UDOT plans on closing the Little Cottonwood Canyon road @ 0645 on Thursday the 27th. We will be test firing artillery in the mid-canyon from Maybird to above Snowbird Entry 1.
Stay clear the North side of the canyon from Maybird to Monte Cristo until 0800.
Estimated road opening at 0800 tomorrow.

wtf? are you in utah now, powdork?
must be, you're already farming your turns.^^^
gimme a call.
^^^ Nice work! I love the pole/follow cam effect. looked like fun.
I've been touring around here a good bit, from white and pink pine to rocky point to grizzly to the emmas to cardiff, but not posting pics here - seems so redundant and I don't know that any of you are interested, so why bother? But here are a couple since I was out with our smart weatherman, Lionel Hutz and his girlfriend Holly. Please tell me if this face we skied is called Cardiff or Flagstaff, because I get mixed answers. I have been there over and over now, including solo - I just love it on a bluebird powder morning. :)

Sweet! Looks like you've been making the best of Utardia. That first shot is Poleline Pass. Flagstaff is north east of that. Cardiff is behind and northwest of where that shot is.
Cardiff fork is the drainage northwest of the bowl that you were skiing, which is called Cardiff bowl. Although the peak above, with the weather station, that they put the christmas tree shaped lights on is officially named: 10,277, but it is always called Cardiff peak. My friends and I just refer to it as the christmas tree.
Did east bowl for the first time, super fun, great snow considering how warm it was, everything was stable, some sluffing on the south face in grizzyl gulch on the way back to the car.
Nice Zach. Broads?
Thanks for the info. One of these days I want to go further north there and ski around the heli terrain. Cardiac?
But tomorrow I am thinking of Superior - e/se from the top. I'd like your evaluation. Ski maybe between 10-11 am? Or will it just be too warm?
Superior is generally a good time, but it is tracked out and will mostly be a variety of crusts after our warm day today and our winds last night. And yes, given that the forecast high temp for LCC is 41-45, 11 will probably be too late for a south facing run.

Looks like West Bowl to me. East facing, yes.
Edit to add, Nice vid, good angles. Thanks for the stoke!
Mixed bag today. Found some deep surface hoar that skied pretty well but its also starting to camouflage the icy, bare patches. I got to push into terrain that I've rarely felt safe skiing; large, open 35 degree rock slabs.

Sick pics!
Variable out there today on N-NE aspects below 10k up north in the Wasatch. Surface hoar noticed on shady slopes below 9k.

So I skied superior from the top (se) at 10:30. It was perfect. I'm so happy.
I'll put up a couple of pics shortly.

some wind slab and ice but the NW faces were sweet
Damn I miss the Utah pow! Great pics everyone...
Supportable crust and fast travel at 6,000ft elevations.

The fog is now smog. Perhaps this page is a better resource for "current conditions".

My partner lost his keys on Circle Awl this morning. Just in case someone found some keys for a Dodge up there. I think he also had some Toyota keys on there too.
