Rem 700 is pretty much the benchmark for high powered bolt rifles - can't really go wrong with them. Lots of guys love Savages and they are great rifles for the pretty cheap price. Ruger makes great handguns and the 10/22 is very cool once you take the trigger group apart and polish everything and actually the #1 (single shot falling-block) is pretty kick ass. If you have the $$ I vote for the Sako G Wolf. Sako bolt actions are so smooth it's like having a semi-auto and the triggers are glass.

Rover - AKs are cool and all (I and a bunch of other guys on here own them), but I'd never hunt with one unless I had no other option. Especially in Alaska - 7.62x39 is basically a .30/30 as far as ballistics go.

I went to a shop and fondled about 7 different brands of rifles that are available in .338 win mag. Jer's words rang true and the Sako is just on another level, but seeing how I don't have $1,700 to throw down on a rifle I am looking at the Tikken T3 Lite, synthetic stock, stainless barrel. I was pretty disappointed with some of the other brands especially the american brands. This is just from picking them up and working the action, some of them feel sloppy, some feel like the catch, and others just felt chintzy.

The guy at the shop said that because the T3 lite is so light weight that .338 win mag is down right abusive to shoot. So now I am considering dropping in caliber. I had originally wanted a gun that can handle anything up here (AK) (Griz). However I have no desire to hunt griz but theres always the chance of running into one. ah well

I just happen to like the word "Kalashnikov"...it just has a good ring to it. Sounds like adventure in far off places. The glint of something shiny up in that pass to the left...you're being scoped, drop and roll. However I'm not too fond of the numeric acronym "AK-47"...just doesn't have that good ring to it, so I feel cheated when I say it.

So, I would prefer just to say "Kalashnikov", but there are lots of different Kalashnikovs, the 47 is just the most famous of them, so that would be confusing...hence 'Kalashnikov AK-47'.

Micky Kalashnikov is still alive and kicking....he seems as durable as the guns he designed!

Notae bene: That AK leaning against the tree looks more like a modern variant of the AKMS...I mean, it has a side-folding stock, instead of a down-rotating stock like on a lot of the folding 47s. Of course, they're all pretty-much all children of the 47 anyway...even the 74. And the 108 that the Russian Army uses now is basically a hippy-dippy fancy version of the old 47, just configured for the 5.56mm NATO rounds instead, and some sort of fancy dampening system and reconfigured shell ejection...just won't last like an old 47, me thinks. New and improved shit never does.

EDIT: That IS a downward rotating stock on that thing. Sorry. Don't know what I was thinking. You sure that thing is not a AEK-971 or derivative thereof??? I just don't get 47 from it. It looks so different from the kalashs that I've shot in Siberia.

AK-107 and the A stand for Alexandrov, a co-designer.

The .338 is a compromise between the .308 and .50BMG. My TRG 42 weighs around 11 lbs, then add the muzzle brake, bipod, scope and rings, and ammo, so I figure around 15-16 lbs. And it thumps you pretty good.

Best advice is not to go super lite, and make sure you get a ported barrel or muzzle brake. If you are just out plinking, take a small sandbag to put against your shoulder to shoot from. Works great. If you're hunting, chances are you will never notice the recoil.

I don't know jack about hunting grizzlies, but I would think if you weren't married to the .338 you would have a lot more (and more cost-effective) options with a .300 win mag or 7mm mag. And wasn't there an email going around a few years ago where that guy put like ten rounds of 300 in a grizzly that was charging him? If that was true, then I can't imagine that .338 would have done it in one shot, so maybe a smaller round in semiauto would be better than a big daddy bolt action.

Correct! The "AK" appelation in that gun was sort of a inside joke between the two and Kalashnikov joked about calling it the KA-107, but Alexandrov would have none of it, and demanded the "A" stand for Alexandrov. The joke was really on Alexandrov, though, as most outsiders just continued to think that the "A" stood for "Avtomat". Kalashnikov was a smart guy. He was also a pretty decent chess player, as could be seen in the above "joke".

Loon - Tikka's are nice shooters. I don't really dig the newer stocks and the plastic mags and stuff, but you have to cut costs somewhere - a magazine is just a cartridge holder, the iron is absolutely top notch. For the price, I like them better than Savages. The second rifle from the left in my photo is an older model Tikka (595). I don't know a whole lot about big-ass magnum calibers like a .338, but a .300 Win Mag or a .300 WSM would do fine for all the game you listed besides maybe the griz. T3 comes in .300WSM, I'm not sure about .300 Win Mag. The WSM will kick slightly less than the Win Mag. Like Ken said - a muzzle brake will reduce the recoil noticably - just make sure you wear plugs AND muffs while zeroing it.

We should start talking about shitty guns. Everybody's owned one at one time or another. When I was 15 or so I had a Sears Roebuck 12 ga that was given to me by a relative who didn't hunt. The thing weighed about 15 lbs and had one of those early "vari-choke" things on the muzzle - it looked like about 6" of barrel-shroud with screw-in choke tubes. Really balanced the gun well. Thing shot like it was run over by a tracked vehicle as well. What a POS. I gave it to somebody - I can't even remember who - by the time I graduated highschool. Yes douchebags - that was somewhere around my 30th birthday.:rolleyes2

was gonna head out for some shootin' fun with an AK I just picked up and noticed the upper hand guard/gas cylinder isn't seated properly. I've tried several times to get it to fit, but no luck. Haven't shot it yet and wondering if this is a big deal or not?

Parvo - did you disassemble/re-assemble? I don't know if that would be that big of a deal, but I'd keep my left hand well clear of that area for the first few rounds.

Parvo, who built the gun? CAI?? Century Arms International?

If so, be careful. They sent out a bunch that were not headspaced correctly and have a tendency to go boom, but in the wrong place.

Get a gunsmith to check it out.

It's a Romanian import. I disassembled and cleaned it when I got it. The guy I bought if from didn't like it because shooting it hurt his little girl-like frame. Still had a bunch of cosmoline in it. I asked him if he had any problems with the handguard and he didn't know what I was talking about and didn't know how to take it apart anyway.

I can get the rear of it to seat properly but then the front doesn't.
When I get the front of it to seat properly, the rear doesn't lock down.

I'll take it to my gun store and have them check it out before I shoot it. I really didn't need another AK but this was a deal I couldn't pass up.

That's kinda funny. The past few weeks I'd been complaining about how the steel butt-plate on my K-31 was destroying my shoulder to the point where I almost considered putting a recoil pad on it. Then I talked to my Uncle and he told me to stop being a pussy and start shooting twice as many rounds per session. Now shooting it doesn't hurt at all. Had some weird vein-like bruising for a bit, but now it feels fine. Still tho - I can't imagine an intermediate round like 7.62x39 taking a toll on any non-pygmy male.

He said it bruised his shoulder when he shot one mag out of it. Which, I believe, is all he shot out of it. Plus, his woman just had a baby and she didn't want an "assault weapon" in the house and they needed cash.

I got the rifle, two mags, little green pouch, sling, cleaning kit, bayonet & sheath, and a big bucket of cheap Wolf ammo (my guess over 200 rds) for $250. He was asking $300 and I balked because he didn't clean it and the corrosive wolf rounds are crap. I feel like I stole it from him.

Jer, could always use spare mags and I'm not sure when the next gun show is here. Whatcha got?

I've got a buncha 30 rd steel mags that I'm pretty sure are of E German origin. Most of 'em have a few very minor rust spots, but they all work great (at least in my Yugo). I could probably part with 4 or 5 of them - $12 each?? I don't even know what AK mags are going for at the moment.

I don't think Wolf ammo is corrosive. Berdan primed, but not corrosive.

I may have to try this "shooting off my nuts" thing.

45-70 is overkill i think. 30-30, put some ghost rings on it, or maybe a rail and red dot? This has a 18 inch barrel, big loop lever and 6 round tubular magazine. for 479$

Parvo - My Hungarian SA-85M is the same way and has been fine through a few thousand rounds. Blast away!

Cono - Nice, I've got a thing for lever guns now as well. A Marlin 30-30 is on my list of things to buy.

Tons of nice lever action rifles out there right now. Winchester, Marlin, Henry, Savage all make levers now. THe cowboy action shooting craze has caused a resurgence in them, and in tons of different calibers. .30-30 is kind of dead right now. I have a .35 Marlin that is nice.

And, don't forget, you can get reproductions of the Winchester 1887 in a 12 gauge.

I have three bolt guns, a handful of shotguns, some pistols and revolvers and an AK and mini 14. I have decided I "need" an AR style rifle and have my eye on the Para TTR. Any strong opinions. It seems like a great gun, with some features which stand out over the standard AR-15. My other choice was the Sig 556.

Personaly, i am kind of not a fan of ARs. They always felt wierd to me, especially the m4 style stock with the wierd angled butt, the high bore axis is touted as beingso good to reduce felt recoil, but htere isnt much recoil anyways, and the high bore axis mostly makes it so that cheek weld becomes chin weld.

Plus, the gas system, not so much a fan, they shit where they eat. At least get a gas piston, instead of the DI.

There are LOTS of decent non AR 223s on the market now. Now is actually a good time ot buy a 556, since I think prices hace dropped a bit sine the SCAR L and ACR have hit the market.

The ACR sure looks nice. My bigest gripe with AR's is they sacrifice so much to get lightweight, the ACR looks not much heavier, and a whole lot more inherently reliable.

Yea, I knwo plenty of people with reliable ARs, maybe even through a few thousand rounds, but the DI system gets progressively less smooth functioning with use, a good system like teh 556 or FAL or AK will actually break up the the crud and move it out of the way as it functions, they will also not deposit the crap in the action of the gun as much.

For most people that isnt an issue. ARs are inherently very accurate because of the DI system, for many hunters and target shooters this is a good trade off, but I am just not a huge fan.
